Ludhiana: Inspection reveals open sewage, garbage dump at Tajpur complex
Serious environmental violations and worsening pollution levels have been found along the Buddha Nullah near the Tajpur Dairy Complex. A team from the Public Action Committee (PAC), led by activist Anita Sharma, conducted an inspection near the 5 MLD effluent treatment plant (ETP) on Sunday. The visit revealed shocking scenes of open sewage, garbage dumps, illegal encroachments, and foul-smelling conditions across the area. Temporary huts have taken over nearly one kilometre of the bank. These shanties lack toilets and proper drainage, and waste is dumped directly into the nullah. The nearby government fish market is also discharging waste into the water body. Roads leading to the site are broken and filthy, making the area almost unlivable. Two outlets were found releasing untreated wastewater straight into the nullah — one from the dairy complex and the other from the ETP itself. Residents living near the Tajpur complex have long raised concerns. 'We have been breathing foul air for months. Cattle waste and garbage are left out in the open,' said Harjit Singh, a local resident. Another resident, Shalini Arora, added, 'There is no accountability. Political leaders promise action during elections but disappear later.' The PAC held a meeting with dairy owners and suggested key steps: setting up a dairy cooperative society, following zero liquid discharge (ZLD) norms, building cow dung disposal points, and ensuring proper waste transport. A proposal was made to channel all dairy waste into a central gobar gas plant for sustainable treatment. PAC also recommended installing bio-digesters at dairy units, GPS tracking of waste vehicles, and quarterly audits. A community helpline and monitoring committees were also suggested to ensure transparency. Anita Sharma condemned the inaction of local authorities. 'The Buddha Nullah is choking due to negligence. If no urgent steps are taken, this will become a health disaster,' she said. Despite repeated promises, political parties have failed to act. Even the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had earlier proposed a parking and waste management system under the elevated road nearby, but it never materialised.

Three of family killed, two seriously injured as car crushed between trucks on Mumbai-Ahm Hwy
PALGHAR: Three members of a family, including a 43-year-old man, his wife, and his mother, were killed and two others sustained serious injuries after their car was crushed between two heavy vehicles on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway near Wada Khadkona village, Palghar around 11.30 am on Saturday. According to the police, the family was travelling towards Mumbai in a Renault Duster when the car collided with a container truck that had abruptly braked near the end of the Mendhwan Ghat section. Moments later, a silo truck following the Duster rammed into it from behind, leaving the vehicle severely damaged. The deceased have been identified as Clayton Valles, 43, his wife Fabiola Valles, 45, and his mother Gloria Valles, 73. Clayton's father, Henan Valles, 63, and nine-year-old son, Redan, sustained serious injuries and were initially treated at a private hospital in Manor before being shifted to Mumbai in the evening. The family, residents of IC Colony in Borivali, was returning from Daman after attending a family function when the accident occurred. Police said the accident happened on a slope near Hotel Manor Gate, a known accident-prone stretch. Inspector Ranvir Bayes of Manor police station said the Duster was completely crushed and it took nearly 90 minutes for rescue teams to cut through the wreckage and recover the bodies. Redan has suffered fractures to his arm and leg and also sustained facial injuries, while Henan received multiple facial wounds. Initial reports suggested that ongoing roadwork may have led to the sudden braking by the container truck, but National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) official Suhas Chitnis denied that any repair work was underway at the time. Police officials said the site is a designated accident black spot and that further investigations would be conducted to determine the exact cause of the crash. Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh visited the site and said authorities would check whether proper signage and safety measures were in place. Regular commuters on the stretch said that no precautionary signage was visible other than a black spot board, and suggested that rumble strips and warning signs should be installed well in advance. In a previous fatal accident along the same highway stretch near Charoti, industrialist Cyrus Mistry was killed on September 4, 2022, after a vehicle crash involving sudden lane merging. Commuters and officials have raised concerns over the increasing number of serious accidents following recent white-topping work along the Virar-Talasari section.

Jaipur-Bandikui eway link to open soon
1 2 3 4 5 6 Jaipur: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has completed construction of the Jaipur-Bandikui Expressway Link and will open it for traffic soon. With this link road, commuters can travel between Delhi and Jaipur within 3 to 3.5 hours. Speaking to TOI, BS Yadav, project director of NHAI (Dausa PIU), stated that the road is already constructed and ready to use. The authority is now waiting for a series of safety audits and the final nod from the headquarters. "Following the accident on the Ajmer Road in Dec 2024, we don't want to take any risk. Safety is our priority. The safety audits are ongoing. Once we forward the report, the headquarters will announce the dates. We cannot reveal the exact date now, but this link road will open for traffic very soon," Yadav told TOI. Once it opens, vehicles from Jaipur (coming from Rotary Circle) will take a slip lane at the Bagrana crossing to reach this linkway. On the other hand, traffic from the Ring Road will take a ramp of the cloverleaf and land on this linkway. Similarly, vehicles coming from the Bandikui side through this linkway will take an elevated ramp. NHAI officials claimed that this stretch will help vehicles travel between Jaipur and the entry and exit points of the DND (Delhi-Noida Direct) Flyway in 2.5 hours. However, it may take another 30 to 45 minutes to reach the Railway Station or the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. Officials said the last missing link of this greenfield project was a ROB (Railway Overbridge). NHAI earlier planned to allow traffic on this road by the end of April by creating a small diversion in the absence of this ROB. "But we did not find the option safe and viable. Instead, we focused on constructing the ROB as fast as possible. We completed the ROB maintaining all safety standards," added Yadav.
