Suspended city manager Noxolo Nqwazi is applying to have her criminal charges thrown out, arguing that the state has failed to produce any evidence linking her to alleged fraud and procurement irregularities in a R24m Covid-19 emergency toilet project.

Parliament's Ad Hoc Committee, tasked with investigating serious allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, is scheduled to meet on Thursday to finalise and adopt its Terms of Reference. ANC Member of Parliament Molapi Soviet Lekganyane, who was appointed as chairperson last week, will lead the committee in examining the claims made by Mkhwanazi, which include accusations of political interference and operational sabotage within the South African Police Service (SAPS). Political parties were given until last Friday to submit their proposed inputs to ensure that the Terms of Reference reflect a broad and representative range of perspectives. However, EFF leader Julius Malema expressed concerns that the draft Terms of Reference had not yet been circulated to all parties. In a letter to committee chairperson Lekganyane, Malema noted that the committee had agreed to circulate the draft by the end of Tuesday to allow timely submissions by Friday, August 8, 2025. He questioned the delay and requested details on the management committee responsible for drafting the Terms and the legal professionals involved, stressing the importance of handling the sensitive matter with seriousness. Due to Parliament's recess, members agreed to relocate committee operations to Gauteng in August to facilitate its work.

Despatch police probe early morning double murder
Police are investigating a double murder at an informal settlement in Despatch after two men were shot dead during the early hours of Thursday. According to reports, Despatch police received a complaint of a shooting in Dukubana Street, Kingstown, at about 1.05am. On arrival at the residence, they found the bodies of two adult males with gunshot wounds. 'At this stage, the motive for the attack remains unknown, and no arrests have been made,' police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said. 'Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects and are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in the investigation.' She said the names of the deceased would be released once their next-of-kin had formally identified them. 'The SA Police Service urges anyone with information related to this incident to contact detective Sergeant Mteteleli Ngalo on 082-441-7828 or Crime Stop on 08600-10111. One dead, two injured after e-hailing vehicles set on fire in Maponya Mall
One person died and two others were injured after e-hailing vehicles were attacked at Maponya Mall in Soweto on Wednesday evening, police confirmed. Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said an e-hailing driver was shot and his vehicle torched while another driver and a passer-by were wounded. 'According to information at hand, an e-hailing vehicle was seen stopping at the entrance when about four men approached the driver and shot at him before torching the vehicle,' Nevhuhulwi said. 'Another vehicle which was nearby was shot at. The driver managed to flee and his vehicle was also torched. It was later discovered that the driver and a passer-by sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital.' Nevhuhulwi said the suspects are unknown and the motive behind the incident is unclear. A case of murder, attempted murder and arson has been opened for further investigation. 'The SA Police Service and Johannesburg Metro Police are on the scene to monitor the situation which is suspected to be taxi violence-related.' Gauteng transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela described the attack as 'senseless and unacceptable'. 'No grievance or commercial dispute justifies the taking of a life or putting innocent people at risk. Violence of this nature undermines public safety, tarnishes the image of our transport sector, and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.' She urged taxi associations and e-hailing operators to resolve disputes through peaceful dialogue which can be facilitated by the Gauteng department of roads and transport. TimesLIVE
