The longest flight in the world is 18 hours and 45 minutes long and connects New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Singapore Changi International Airport (SIN).
For the flight attendants who work this ultra-long-haul route, the work presents unique challenges—as well as unique ways to connect with passengers.
To thrive during the extended time in the air, flight attendants have come up with interesting ways to make their work more enjoyable.There are long-haul flights, and then there are ultra-long-haul flights, a completely different beast altogether.
Currently, the longest nonstop flight in the world clocks in at 18 hours and 45 minutes, connecting New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Singapore Changi International Airport (SIN). For most passengers, that's a test of endurance. For flight attendants, it's just another day at the office—albeit one that happens to be 38,000 feet in the air.
We spoke with Madeline Khaw, a leading flight attendant at Singapore Airlines who regularly flies this marathon route, to get her perspective on what it's like to work the world's longest flight and her tips for making ultra-long-haul flights more comfortable.
For most people, the idea of being a flight attendant might bring to mind images of glamorous travel to far-off destinations—but Khaw says that there's much more to being a flight attendant. For example, the logistics alone on this route are staggering. Since the flight is 18 hours long, the crew operates in carefully planned shifts.
"The crew is divided into designated rest periods in the crew bunks," Khaw says. "It's critical to ensure that all crew members get adequate rest, so they're alert and able to provide consistent service and deliver the required safety standards throughout the journey."
Plus, sleeping at 38,000 feet presents its own challenges. Khaw says that designated rest areas are available to help the crew recharge, but sometimes it can be tricky to sleep on board because of turbulence or cabin noise.
The toll on crew members goes far beyond simply being tired. Readjusting to time zones that are 12 to 15 hours apart wreaks havoc on sleep patterns and overall well-being.
"Operating long-haul flights does come with its own set of challenges, with fatigue being one of the most noticeable long-term effects," Khaw says. "Over time, it may contribute to things like persistent tiredness and occasional breakouts."
This reality has forced Khaw to become proactive about self-care.
"Facial masks have become a must in my skincare routine, especially hydrating ones, to combat the effects of drier cabin air and jet lag," she says.
The long flight time also creates unique team dynamics. The crew's preparation begins long before takeoff, with rosters specifically arranged to help them prepare for and recover from these demanding flights.
"From the moment we begin our duties, there's an unspoken understanding that we'll need to rely on each other throughout the 18 hours—not just for service efficiency, but also to maintain morale and energy," Khaw explains.
Even small moments matter during such a long journey. "Sharing a laugh or moment with the crew during a lull period is a real energy booster," she says.
What makes this route particularly unique is how passenger interactions evolve over such a prolonged period. Unlike shorter flights where passengers maintain relatively consistent moods, the 18-hour journey reveals what Khaw describes as "a fuller spectrum of human behavior."
"We tend to see people go from being fresh and excited to tired and sometimes emotional, before reverting to a more cheerful demeanor closer to landing," she says.
However, the length of this particular route has led to some of Khaw's most memorable moments in her career. On one flight, she remembers a passenger struggling to connect to the onboard Wi-Fi while trying to send an important email.
"I made the unconventional decision to offer him my personal device, understanding that I would want someone to extend the same offer to me if I were in his situation," Khaw says. "This allowed him to finish sending the email promptly and return to enjoying his flight."
The story doesn't end there, though.
"What made the incident really touching was what happened after,' Khaw says. 'Having remembered my birthday from our brief conversation, he would send a simple birthday greeting to me every year—a small but meaningful reminder of how a small act of empathy can form a lasting human connection, even at 38,000 feet in the air."
Before each 18-hour journey, Khaw has developed specific rituals to prepare for the demands ahead.
"An important activity to keep me grounded is to spend quality time with my loved ones at home," she says. "Sharing a simple, home-cooked meal with my family can help me reset emotionally before being away for several days."
Practical preparation is equally crucial.
"Making sure I am fully prepared gives me peace of mind, so I have a ritual of double-checking everything I've packed for the longer layover, such as extra sets of uniforms, skincare, and vitamins."
Khaw's approach aligns with other experienced crew members on the route. Lead flight attendant Ashley Tan, who has been part of this marathon journey since its early days, emphasizes the importance of getting adequate rest the night before, ideally around seven to eight hours of sleep. During long breaks mid-flight, Tan changes into comfortable clothes for more relaxing rest periods and strategically avoids caffeine, which can have heightened effects at altitude, including jitteriness and potential nausea.
"I still remember that flight. I was so excited that I couldn't sleep before the flight," Tan says of her early experiences on the route in a Straits Times video.
But perhaps most importantly, Khaw maintains perspective about her unique role.
"Mentally, I try to stay grounded by reminding myself of the bigger picture—that this is a privileged role and not everyone gets to do this," she says. "I'm flying to New York, one of the most exciting cities in the world, and I've trained hard to be here. That sense of pride keeps me centered."
Despite the challenges, Khaw says that the job has given her unique growth opportunities both professionally and as a person.
"Getting to operate ultra-long-haul flights has taken me to places I never imagined visiting," she says. "Beyond just traveling, this role has helped me build resilience, adaptability, and strong time management skills from working in constantly shifting time zones."
Based on her experiences and what she's noticed from frequent travelers, Khaw has four tips to make your next ultra-long-haul flight more comfortable:
"I've learned that eating too much, too little, or at the wrong times can really throw off my body clock and affect digestion, especially when crossing multiple time zones," Khaw says. "To avoid sluggishness and bloating, I try to stick to light, non-greasy meals before a flight."
Experienced passengers understand the importance of proper hydration during extended flights. "Frequent flyers on this route sometimes prefer drinking plenty of water throughout the flight, avoiding sugary or caffeinated drinks that can dehydrate," Khaw says.
Seasoned travelers often come prepared for the long journey ahead. "They will often dress comfortably to adapt to the changing cabin temperatures, making sure to bring essential items, such as noise-canceling headphones and a neck pillow, or a good moisturizer," Khaw says.
Smart passengers don't wait until landing to start adjusting to their destination's schedule. "Travelers would also make a conscious effort to try and adjust to the time zone of their destinations by either sleeping or staying awake at appropriate times," she says.
After countless hours working at 38,000 feet, Khaw has learned that ultra-long-haul flights reveal something fundamental about human nature, both in passengers and crew. Whether it's a frustrated passenger who becomes a lifelong connection or a crew member finding their stride during demanding shifts, these marathon journeys often strip away pretense and show what really helps: good preparation, a bit of empathy, and the small gestures that make long distances more bearable.

Specialist travel retailer, Hudson, has plans for 20 new travel convenience and specialty retail concepts—including two hybrid stores—at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta, consistently the world's busiest air gateway. This amounts to a 50% hike in stores. Hudson, which has over 1,000 stores in airports, commuter hubs, landmarks, and tourist locations across North America, has been awarded two 10-year contracts to open the new stores in four concourses and the domestic atrium at the Delta Air Lines hub. The 20 stores will span more than 19,000 square feet and will open amid an expanded partnership with ATL Skypointe, the official retail and dining program of the airport. They will add to the 40 locations currently run by Hudson. The wins 'reflect success in securing two distinct retail packages through competitive proposals, each in collaboration with local, certified ACDBE partners,' according to a statement from Hudson. Airport Concessions Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (ACDBE) is an initiative implemented by the Federal Aviation Administration designed to ensure that socially and economically disadvantaged businesses (such as those that are minority-owned and women-owned), have fair opportunities to compete for airport concession contracts. Hudson—part of Switzerland-based global travel retail giant Avolta whose sales in North America have been flat this year, will open new stores in Concourses T, A, B, and C, and the domestic atrium from early next year. Among the 20 stores, there will be additional locations for familiar brands such as luggage maker Tumi, skincare house Kiehl's, and heritage apparel maker Johnston & Murphy. Hudson's proprietary concepts such as tech store iPorte and Simply Beauty will also be present. A dedicated SoAtlanta store will blend national brands including sunglasses, apparel, and cosmetics with local items, while two new Ink by Hudson bookstores will include picks by local independent bookseller 44th & 3rd, a black, family-run store founded in 2017 by Warren, Cheryl, and Allyce Lee in the historic West End neighborhood of Atlanta. Hartsfield-Jackson champions local businesses Leaning into ACDBE, Hudson will also engage 200 local small businesses, including Atlanta Beltline Marketplace, bringing together a collection of travel convenience stores created exclusively for Hartsfield-Jackson. Some of the retail brands are Maple and Magnolia, Atlanta Beltline by Hudson (a hybrid with Costa Coffee), Westside Co., Atlanta Magazine, UrbanOak by Hudson (partnering Starbucks), and Shellis News. Other retail units from Hudson will highlight Atlanta's noted role in the civil rights movement at Atlanta Reflections, and pay tribute to the city's Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) heritage at Legacy ATL. Hudson will operate the new locations with six local entrepreneurs and certified ACDBE partners. Hartsfield-Jackson's senior deputy general manager Tyronia Smith said that Hudson's new offer 'marks an exciting new chapter in our concessions program.' She added: 'Atlanta Airport is building a concessions program that reflects the diverse desires and needs of its global audience.' As the world's busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson processed more than 108 million passenger in 2024, up 3.3% year-over-year. The new contracts represent a growth opportunity for Hudson, and its parent Avolta, and the extra footprint will help to offset a currently difficult North American airport retail market. In the first half of 2025, the Delta Air Lines hub saw a 1.5% rise in aircraft operations but a 2.1 2.1% fall in passenger traffic to 52.1 million, driven chiefly by a fall in domestic travel of 3%.

How do I respond when he inevitably asks if he can join us on a golfing vacation? — Wants to Be Kind Kind: Proactivity is going to be your friend here. Just as you'd be proactive about planning the logistical details of your vacation — hotel, golf courses, flights, etcetera — you can be proactive about planning the vibe. This way, you don't have to wait for him to ask to join you. You can lead the conversation on what joining looks like. Start from a place of possibility. Have a conversation that starts off with the premise 'Yes, that might be a fun idea, now how can we make it work together?' Then don't be afraid to talk about the things that you like to do on vacation and invite him to think about the ways that the things that you like and the things that he likes can coexist. For example, if he was an early riser and you were a late sleeper, you could tell him that the group should plan to meet up for lunch most days and not before then. When I go on group vacations, I tell my friends that by the third day, I need about six hours of solo exploration time. And on the third day, I go off on my own, I have an adventure, I buy a trinket and I come back refreshed. No one feels upset about this because advocating for what I need in advance doesn't come across as rejection of the group. Setting a boundary in a relationship isn't about pushing the relationship away, it's about preserving the relationship. He likely knows about his proclivity to chat and keep busy. He might want to invite a friend who also likes to talk. Think of the vacation as a menu: you don't all have to dine on the same dish, but it's better to choose in advance rather than wait to see what the kitchen brings out. Dear Eric: I am so disappointed in my 18-year-old granddaughter. She recently got a tiny cross tattoo on her arm. I dislike them and hate seeing people covered with ink. She went to a Christian school her whole life and is accepted at a Christian college and lives a Christian life. I know it's her life but, having been close to her from birth, I now feel I don't know her and the trends she accepts. Long fake nails, tattoos, bleach hair that has ruined her once lovely brunette, short tight clothes that are barely there, skimpy bathing suits. The list goes on. It is a slippery slope for what's acceptable to younger people today. How far will we slide in society before we stop? What should I do to turn her around? — Disappointed Grandma Grandma: Your reaction to the tattoo suggests that she's sliding into a wild depravity, but the tattoo itself — a small cross — doesn't seem to be a symbol of that. I don't know the details of the 'Christian life' she's living, but even with the long nails and the short clothes, your letter paints a picture of someone who is not sowing wild oats. Maybe something more akin to overnight oats. Respectfully, I encourage you to relinquish some of the control that you want to have over your granddaughter's life and choices. She isn't 'covered in ink' and even if she was, it's her body and other people's opinions about her body, including yours, are not appropriate. If you don't respect her enough to let her explore her own path at 18, it will be harder to have a loving and supportive relationship as she continues into adulthood. Hair grows out, nails come off, clothing trends change. Her choices are not indicative of a society on the verge of collapse. They're age-appropriate experiments that happen in every generation, just with different trends. Think back to when you were 18. Even if you still approve of all the choices you made, it's not hard to imagine that someone two generations removed from you did not approve. What would have been more helpful for you then? Disapproval and reprimand, or a 'live and let live approach' that saw you for who you were on the inside? Try to connect to your empathy when it comes to your granddaughter. 'We're celebrating another exciting milestone in our journey to transform Southwest Airlines – giving Customers more reasons to choose Southwest. Plus, we're affirming our longtime commitment to California with new routes from San Diego's reimagined Terminal 1.' Southwest Airlines Makes Quiet Change Not long after announcing the new service to Knoxville, a Southwest Airlines spokesperson revealed the carrier is making another significant change at one of the busiest airports in the United States. Airline Geeks reported Southwest is making adjustments to its St. Louis operations to "better support north/south connectivity" and improve connections at Chicago Midway and Nashville, the spokesperson stated. The airline plans to end service between St. Louis and Tulsa, OK; Oklahoma City; Wichita, KS; Des Moines, IA; and Little Rock, AR. "Flights from St. Louis to Tulsa, Wichita, and Des Moines will be redistributed to Chicago Midway, the St. Louis–Oklahoma City route will shift to Dallas Love Field, and St. Louis–Little Rock will instead be served from Nashville," Airline Geeks wrote. Southwest is also exiting a number of other routes including, Eugene, OR, to Oakland, St. Louis to Burbank, CA; Houston Hobby to Greenville-Spartanburg, SC; Jackson, MS, to Baltimore/Washington; Atlanta to New York LaGuardia; and Atlanta to Raleigh-Durham, NC.
