Sebastiao Salgado, photographer of the extraordinary, has died at 81

LeMonde24-05-2025
Until Sebastiao Salgado, many believed Edward Steichen's 1955 exhibition "The Family of Man"– a unifying portrait of humanity – would forever remain the world's most popular photography show, with its 10 million visitors. But the Franco-Brazilian photography superstar eventually surpassed his predecessor with "Genesis," a black-and-white ode to the untouched beauty of the planet before human destruction: graceful penguins and impenetrable forests – a show that has toured the globe for over 12 years. In fact, both projects share a universal vision and much in common.
With the death of Salgado on Friday, May 23, from leukemia, one of the last heirs to humanist photography passed away. Throughout his life, he sought to condemn social and environmental injustices, while celebrating faith in humanity through sweeping global photographic narratives. "I simply want those who look at my photos to feel that people are noble everywhere," he told Le Monde.

'Freakier Friday': Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis reunite in nostalgic sequel

Le Monde's opinion – Why not In 1998, Lindsay Lohan was barely 12 years old when she became the new face of Disney. At the time, the studio had a preference for well-behaved young girls, launching them into sweet TV series and family films. The United States, from Shirley Temple to Miley Cyrus, has always sought to project an image of childhood innocence. Lohan starred in a string of blockbuster films: the charming Freaky Friday, directed by Mark Waters in 2003, followed the next year by the highly successful teen movie Mean Girls, also directed by Waters. In Freaky Friday, the conflict between mother and daughter and the generational gap are resolved through a body-swap: One day, the daughter (Lohan) finds herself in her mother's body (Curtis), and vice versa, until they come to understand each other. The film was a massive hit, especially with home viewers. Then the young star grew up and rebelled, providing tabloid fodder with her escapades. After a long absence, Lohan made her comeback in 2022, starring in a series of Christmas movies produced by Netflix. Twenty-two years after the original, Freakier Friday marks the return of the actress, now 39, to the big screen. The anxious teenager of the first film has become a successful working woman. Now, it's her turn to be the mother of a rebellious teenager, and even a stepmother, as her partner also has a daughter. A wedding is on the horizon, after which the new family will move to London. The problem: the two teenagers cannot stand each other and are willing to do anything to sabotage their parents' plans. Of course, the grandmother – still played by Curtis – remains in the picture.

Ayn Rand's irresistible attraction to the dominance of the 'alpha male,' as embodied by Elon Musk

One day in 2020, Elon Musk announced on podcaster Joe Rogan's show that he had sold all his luxurious properties. He was living in Boca Chica, Texas, in one of those small houses whose previous owners had been displaced by the expansion of SpaceX's spaceport. The modest house was sparsely furnished and decorated like a teenager's room, with science fiction posters. At the back of the yard, his then partner, the singer Grimes, had her own small studio cabin. Since the time of President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) and philosopher Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), the cabin has symbolized, in the United States, a great man devoted to his mission. In the 20 th century, this iconic image evoked a secret city in the mountains of Colorado: a community of scientists and entrepreneurs living modestly, but freely, sheltered from a tyrannical federal government. This is the Atlantis imagined by novelist Ayn Rand (1905-1982) in one of her bestsellers. Atlas Shrugged, published in 1957, serves as a marker of the cultural divide between France and the US. In France, the novel was only published in 2011 and was met with icy silence. This thousand-page-plus ode to the entrepreneurial spirit has sold more than 10 million copies in the US, where, according to a late 20 th -century readership survey, it is said to be the most influential book after the Bible. Described in Le Monde by essayist Guy Sorman as the Quran of the reactionary world, Rand's work has been cited as an influence by figures as diverse as actor Brad Pitt and whistleblower Edward Snowden.

'The Fantastic Four: First steps': The arrival of Moses in the Marvel universe

Le Monde's opinion – worth seeing With this new cinematic reboot of the Fantastic Four – superheroes created in 1961 by the talented duo Jack Kirby and Stan Lee for Atlas Comics (the future Marvel) – Disney has once again shown its perseverance. The three previous attempts, produced by Fox in 2005, 2007 and 2015, proved to be of little interest. After the 2019 acquisition of Fox, Disney has now unveiled a new take on the saga, directed by Matt Shakman. Shakman had only one unsuccessful attempt at feature films (Hell Town, 2015) before turning to television, particularly for Disney. The studio brought him on board after Jon Watts, initially slated to direct, stepped away to take a break following his recent three-part reboot of Spider-Man. As for the characters, here is a brief summary: a team of explorers exposed to cosmic rays during a space trip end up with superhuman abilities and become protectors of Earth. There is scientist Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic (with limitless elasticity); his wife Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman (expert in force fields); her brother John Storm, the Human Torch (who can ignite himself at will); and Ben Grimm, the Thing (a human being covered in granite). Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss Bachrach (even for a glimpse) take on these roles, respectively.
