British Open 2025: Shane Lowry penalized during Open second round

Shane Lowry was assessed a two-shot penalty after rules officials determined that he caused his ball to move during Friday's second round of the Open Championship. Before hitting his second shot on the par-5 12th hole, Lowry was taking practice swings near his ball when it appeared to move slightly in the rough. Lowry, who won the 2019 Open at Portrush, was notified on the 15th hole that video of the situation was being reviewed. He shot 1-under 71, but with the penalty, he was credited with a 73 and will enter the weekend at even par. 'I wasn't arguing my case, but I'm disappointed that they don't have more camera angles on it,' Lowry said afterward. 'The one, zoomed in, slow motion – they're trying to tell me if it doesn't move from the naked eye, if you don't see it moving, it didn't move. I told them I definitely was looking down toward then ball as I was taking my practice swing, and I didn't see it move, but I had to take the penalty. I'm still not sure whether it was or not, but I had to take the penalty because I can't have my name tossed around like that. '… I'll just have to dust myself off and get out there tomorrow and give it a go.'

Texas Ex Scottie Scheffler shoots 64, surges into lead at British Open 2025

After Day 1 of the 2025 British Open, five golfers were tied for the lead at Royal Portrush. After Day 2, there's only one leader and he's the No. 1 golfer in the world. Former Longhorns golfer Scottie Scheffler shot a 64 on Friday in Northern Ireland to surge into sole possession of the lead at the 153rd Open Championship. Scheffler opened the round with a birdie to get to -5. He then birded holes No. 5, 6 and 7 to shoot a 32 on the front nine. The highlight was his 34-foot putt on the par-3 sixth hole. The UT grad then started the back-nine with a birdie on No. 10 before bogeying the 11th hole for the second day in a row. It didn't faze the unflappable Texan, who finished with birdies on holes No. 13, 16 and 17 to end his day with a -7, 64 on the day. His birdie putt on No. 18 stopped less than an inch short of the hole, otherwise Scheffler would've shot a historic 63. Still, the 64 was Scheffler's lowest round in a major championship, which is saying something considering his recent success in the biggest four golf tournaments of the year. A win this week in Great Britain would give the Texas Ex his second major championship of the year and his fourth major overall. Scheffler has won the Masters twice and two months ago won his first PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. It would also make him one major shy of the career grand slam, to go with his Olympic Gold Medal. Open Championship 2025 leaderboard Click here for the latest leaderboard updates and tee times.
