The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) rescued 413 pilgrims who were stranded along the Kinner Kailash Yatra route in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur district after a flash flood washed away a large portion of the trekking path near the Tangling area.
The rescue operation was carried out by personnel from the 17th Battalion of ITBP using a rope-based traverse crossing technique to safely evacuate the pilgrims to secure locations.
The operation was led by one gazetted officer, supported by four subordinate officers and 29 other personnel, in collaboration with a 14-member team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
Following an alert received from the Kinnaur district administration regarding more people being trapped in the affected area, ITBP and NDRF teams were re-mobilised and continue to carry out intensive search and rescue operations.
ITBP has reiterated its commitment to provide all possible assistance in close coordination with the district administration and other concerned agencies to ensure the safety of all remaining pilgrims.
Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a weather warning at 6:30 AM today, forecasting light to moderate rainfall at most places in Himachal Pradesh, with a few spells of intense to very intense rainfall likely in the districts of Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Mandi over the next 3 to 4 hours.
Additionally, light to moderate rainfall is expected at many places in Chamba, Kangra, Hamirpur, Una, Lahul and Spiti, Kinnaur, and Kullu districts.
Heavy and continuous rainfall has disrupted normal life in Shimla, leading to the closure of most educational institutions in the district.

India should position weddings, MICE as niche tourism segment: Govt official

Kochi, Aug 15 (PTI) India should focus on promoting weddings and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) as a niche tourism segment rather than grouping it under general tourism development, a senior Union Tourism Ministry official said here on Friday. Delivering the keynote address at what was claimed to be the country's first Wedding and MICE conclave, Additional Secretary and Director General of Tourism Suman Billa said Kerala had strong potential to emerge as a leading venue in this category, according to a government release. He suggested that the wedding and MICE segment should ideally have separate microsites on the country's leading tourism portals to bring its immense scope into sharper focus, the release said. The three-day conclave, which began here on Thursday evening, is being organised by the Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) Society in association with the state tourism department. Billa said Kerala stood to benefit greatly from the sector's growth due to its inherent advantages. 'The state has excellent ambience and infrastructure, and the need of the hour is convergence by linking the dots to usher in a synergy," he was quoted as saying. He claimed Kerala had a potential business opportunity worth Rs 1 lakh crore in wedding and MICE tourism. Billa also praised the state government's decision to go beyond conventional tourism strategies and diversify into wedding and MICE. Kerala's green-friendly policies and its widely acclaimed Responsible Tourism model have helped the state renew its reputation as a global destination, he said. He further said the recent US imposition of steeper tariffs on India was unlikely to affect its status as the world's fastest-growing major economy. The summit has attracted over 675 buyers, including 65 from abroad, representing countries such as the UAE, UK, USA, Germany, Australia, and Brazil. Seventy-five exhibition stalls have been set up for sellers. PTI HMP SSK view comments First Published: August 15, 2025, 21:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Govt implements Rs 3,000 FASTag pass for private vehicles

Agency: New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) State-owned NHAI has implemented the FASTag annual pass across the country from Friday to encourage the use of technology to enhance 'ease of living' for the citizens, according to an official statement. The statement said the annual pass has received an overwhelming response from the national highway users. 'Till 4:30 PM on the first day of the implementation, around 1.2 lakh users purchased and activated the annual pass and about 1.24 lakh transactions were recorded on toll plazas," it added. The statement said that providing a seamless and economical travel option to national highway users, the FASTag Annual Pass eliminates the need to frequently recharge FASTag through a one-time fee payment of Rs 3,000 for one year's validity or 200 toll plaza crossings on National Highways and Expressways across the country. The annual pass is applicable to all non-commercial vehicles with a valid FASTag and gets activated within two hours of the one-time fee payment through the Rajmargyatra App or NHAI website. With a penetration rate of around 98 per cent and over 8 crore users, FASTag has revolutionised the Electronic Toll Collection system in the country, the statement said. The introduction of the annual pass facility will not only enhance the FASTag user experience but also make journeys on the National Highways and Expressways more economical and seamless, it added. Bihar govt to spend Rs 35.64 crore on interstate bus services for migrant workers

Patna: Migrant workers from Bihar living in other states will soon find it easier to return home during major festivals like Chhath, Diwali, Holi and Durga Puja, with the state government announcing a Rs 35.64 crore initiative to provide smoother transport facilities. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, in his Independence Day address, said the move aims to reduce the annual rush and ticket shortages faced by people travelling back to Bihar during the festive season. Under the plan, the government will launch interstate bus transport services on a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model, ensuring more buses, regulated fares, and improved connectivity between Bihar and major states such as Delhi, Gurugram, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan. 'This will significantly reduce problems of high fares and non-availability of bus tickets,' Kumar said, adding that the scheme is expected to be operational before the festive season. Every year, thousands of Biharis working outside the state face long waits and inflated fares to return home for celebrations. The new interstate service aims to ease that journey and make festive homecomings stress-free. To encourage operators, the government will provide grants of Rs 150 per seat during peak season and Rs 300 per seat in the off-season. This is expected to increase the number and improve the connectivity of buses running between Bihar and major states such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. The total estimated expenditure over five years is Rs 35.64 crore, with an additional 2 per cent contingency fund of Rs 71.28 lakh, bringing the overall cost to Rs 36.35 crore. For 2025-26, Rs 7.27 crore will be drawn from the Bihar Contingency Fund. Passenger groups have welcomed the initiative, saying it will help end the long-standing issues of ticket shortages and inflated fares during the festive rush. The government believes the scheme will ensure stability in fares and significantly reduce travel hassles for those returning home for celebrations.
