Cade Valek's dunks put an exclamation point on Waubonsie Valley's win in the regional final: ‘He's all in'

Chicago Tribune01-03-2025
At a time when most players are feeling weary, Waubonsie Valley senior forward Cade Valek still has some spring in his step.
Maybe more spring than he had a month ago.
The 6-foot-7 Valek, who has committed to play soccer at Alabama-Huntsville, was playing club soccer this winter in addition to his basketball duties as the Warriors' main big man.
'Cade is an absolute animal,' Waubonsie Valley coach Andrew Schweitzer said. 'I think it's his soccer background. No one quite has a motor like him.
'He's still been playing soccer up until the last few weeks, and we finally had a conversation where, 'You know what, dude? We've got a chance to do something special.' And he's all in.'
Indeed, Valek is taking a break from soccer in order to focus on the Warriors.
'It's been helpful for basketball just because I have fresh legs,' he said. 'I haven't been dragging as much, so it's been good to focus everything on basketball right now, especially with the team we have and the opportunities we have.
'I don't want to take nothing for granted.'
Waubonsie Valley fans take senior combo guard Moses Wilson 's dunking ability for granted, but they don't often get to see Valek dunk.
That changed in a big way Friday, when Valek threw down powerhouse dunks on three consecutive possessions down the stretch to help the second-seeded Warriors close out a 70-52 victory against seventh-seeded Neuqua Valley in the Class 4A Waubonsie Valley Regional championship game in Aurora.
Wilson scored a game-high 21 points and also had six steals for Waubonsie Valley (31-2), which won back-to-back regional titles for the first time since 2007-08 and advances to the Benet Sectional semifinals to play the third-seeded host Redwings (28-5) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Senior guard Tyreek Coleman added 12 points and six assists, sophomore guard Kris Mporokoso scored 15 points and senior guard Joshua Tinney had 12 points and four steals. Sophomore guard Mason Martin paced Neuqua Valley with (20-13) with 12 points.
Valek, a defender in soccer, doesn't get many chances to shoot. Yet he made all four attempts against the Wildcats, who trailed 59-49 when he dunked off a pass from Wilson.
It was the start of an amazing sequence during which Mporokoso found Valek for a second dunk. After Neuqua Valley freshman phenom Cole Kelly converted a three-point play, Coleman set up Valek for a third dunk with 3:20 left in the fourth quarter.
'That's the most dunks I've ever seen him get,' Schweitzer said.
Valek and Wilson have been working on their jumping in practice, which Valek said has helped. But Wilson wouldn't accept credit.
'No, that's all him,' Wilson said. 'We sort of take pride in it. He knows he's explosive. He knows he's tall. So he's been executing and getting on the end of it, for sure.
'It was a great feeling just seeing Cade getting up there. Honestly, I couldn't have been more excited.'
Schweitzer was actually more excited about what came next. Valek took a charge with his team leading by 18 points.
'That was awesome,' Schweitzer said. 'Nothing gets me more excited than a charge. It's sacrificial. It's putting your body on the line for your team. Loved it.'
But Valek, who finished with nine points and five rebounds, wasn't done. On Neuqua Valley's next possession, he made his only steal of the game and followed with his only assist — a terrific alley-oop pass to Wilson for a monster dunk with 2:45 left.
'I thought that was going over,' Schweitzer said. 'But the reality is you can throw it anywhere and usually Moses is going to go up and get it.'
Wilson got the ball at least a foot over the rim.
'He gave me a little-too-perfect pass,' Wilson said. 'Mind you, we've been working on this all practices. We finally got one down in a game.'
For Valek, it was an unanticipated exclamation point to a memorable victory.
'I'm not going to lie,' he said. 'I wasn't expecting that opportunity to come. But, hey, we got it. We'll take it.'
The Warriors will take that kind of win too.
'When Kris is shooting like that and I'm getting downhill and 'Reek and Mo are always going to do their thing and Cade's getting rebounds, we're pretty unstoppable,' Tinney said.
'Cade is a huge part. You don't see it sometimes, but he does a lot, like boxing out, getting rebounds, and when we give him the ball, he does finish.'

Russell Wilson fantasy football preview 2025: Stats, season outlook, predictions

Rotoworld Staff, Russell Wilson 2025 Fantasy Preview 2024: Wilson took his talents to Pittsburgh for 2024 and sat behind Justin Fields with a calf issue until Week 7. He put together a perfectly serviceable performance for a 10-7 Wild Card team, passing for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns with five interceptions. Wilson's deep passing was his strength, earning a league-best 97.3 PFF grade on throws over 20 yards. The 36-year-old isn't the runner he used to be with his third season in the last four under 300 rushing yards. Some boom weeks coupled with some okay weeks made Wilson a fantasy QB2. What's changed: The Giants chose to make Wilson one of Jaxson Dart's mentors and he will likely begin the season as the starter. Despite having Malik Nabers, the Giants offense has dysfunctional tendencies and there will be limited fantasy opportunity. Now at the journeyman/mercenary stage of his career, Wilson can be penciled in as the starter until he simply…isn't. Outlook: Wilson's fantasy viability will be tied to the Giants' patience with Dart. They won't rush the rookie and Wilson starting over Jameis Winston means fantasy managers have a perfectly fine QB3 on their hands for 2025. New York Giants' Russell Wilson sees value in playing preseason games

One would think that most NFL veterans, especially ones who have a Super Bowl ring and 10 Pro Bowls to their credit, would loathe playing preseason games. Not Russell Wilson. The 36-year-old, who signed a one-year, incentive-laden deal with the New York Giants in March, is as exuberant as ever. After the Giants pounded the Jets, 31-12, in their annual preseason meeting on Saturday night, Wilson told reporters he isn't one of those vets who avoid playing in the preseason. "I like playing in the preseason. I like playing any time I get a chance to do that," Wilson said. "Especially early on, you get a rhythm. I think that going against Buffalo, a really good defense, a really good team, obviously, they've been super successful the past several years, you know, last week, and to put a good drive, a 14-play drive together, to be able to move the ball well. "I think Wan'Dale (Robinson) had a really good game that game and made some great catches. Some guys, Theo (Johnson), had a really good game the first game; the offensive line did a great job." That success carried over into Saturday night's game against the Jets, and Wilson was equally as happy. "And then to come back in this game to see guys like Jalin (Hyatt) make some big -- we were backed up the first couple drives really -- and I thought we did a good job obviously getting out of there, the huge explosive play to Beaux (Collins), and then being on the one, two-yard line and Jalin Hyatt running a great route on the right, that was a huge play by him, tremendous route, great protection again," he said. "I think what it does is it just gives you that confidence in what we're doing. We're doing it on the practice field, as you guys have seen in how well we've practiced, but I think to translate that to the game, put a bunch of points on the board, and to be successful. There's still a lot more room to grow. We can be way better, we'll be better, and just as we continue to play and continue to get after it together, it's going to be fun." Wilson is currently the Giants' starter, but rookie Jaxson Dart is breathing down his neck. It no longer seems to be a case of if Dart gets to play this season, but when. Wilson appears to be leaning into it. "I think he's done a tremendous job. He definitely has worked at it every day. You know, he's sitting over here in the room so . . . But he works at it every day, and he asks the right questions," Wilson said of Dart. "That's what I enjoy about him. He knows this, like I'm never shy about giving information and talking about it and us learning about it and me asking and vice versa and we're all just constantly learning." The Giants are having fun and enjoying meaningless preseason games. Things really are changing in East Rutherford.

Report: Warriors linked to multiple veteran free agents during offseason stalemate

The headliner throughout the Golden State Warriors' offseason has been Jonathan Kuminga. All eyes are on the 22-year-old forward as his extended restricted free agency saga rolls on deep into the summer. Kuminga has yet to sign a deal this offseason as he works through different options for his future with Golden State, including a potential sign-and-trade, a new extension with the Warriors, or accepting a $7.9 million qualifying offer. The standoff between the Warriors and Kuminga has slowed down Golden State's activity with other free agents during the offseason. Despite not signing a player this summer, the Warriors continue to be linked to multiple veteran free agents. In a recent appearance on NBA Today, ESPN's Anthony Slater mentioned a few names connected to the Warriors in free agency, including veteran center Al Horford. According to Slater, Horford is "ticketed" to be the Warriors' starting center next season if they can work out a deal. Slater also mentioned De'Anthony Melton, Seth Curry and Gary Payton II as potential options in free agency, along with second-round pick out of Florida Will Richard as potential roster pieces. Via @anythonyVslater on X: With no moves in the offseason and Kuminga's future with the team still in question, the Warriors' roster is currently thin. When Kuminga's situation is resolved, Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Steve Kerr will need fill out the remainder of the depth chart with veteran free agents. However, until then, all eyes will continue to stay on Golden State's saga with Kuminga. This post originally appeared on Warriors Wire! Follow us on Facebook and Twitter!
