Researchers built a social network made of AI bots. They quickly formed cliques, amplified extremes, and let a tiny elite dominate.

A team of researchers gave AI bots their own social platform — and it turned toxic.
The chatbots split into cliques and boosted the most partisan voices. A handful of "influencers" also quickly dominated the conversation, according to a study published last Tuesday by researchers at the University of Amsterdam.
The researchers built a minimal social network with no ads, no recommended posts, and no algorithm deciding what users see. They then populated it with 500 chatbots powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o mini, each assigned a distinct persona, including specific political leanings.
The personas were drawn from the American National Election Studies dataset, and reflected "real-world distributions of age, gender, income, education, partisanship, ideology, religion, and personal interests," the researchers said.
They added that the experiment was replicated with Llama-3.2-8B and DeepSeek-R1 modelling the users and resulted in "the same qualitative patterns."
The study was led by Dr. Petter Törnberg, an assistant professor in computational social science at the University of Amsterdam, and Maik Larooij, a research engineer at the university.
The researchers, OpenAI, Meta, and DeepSeek, did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
Even without algorithms and humans, the same toxic patterns emerged
Over the course of five separate experiments — each running over 10,000 actions — the bots were free to post, follow, and repost. What happened looked a lot like real-world social media.
The study found that the chatbots gravitated toward others who shared their political beliefs, forming tight echo chambers. Partisan voices gained an outsize share of attention, with the most extreme posts attracting the most followers and reposts. Over time, a small group of bots came to dominate the conversation, much like the influencer-heavy dynamics seen on platforms like X and Instagram.
The researchers also tested six interventions meant to break the polarization loop, including a chronological feed, downranking viral content, hiding follower counts, hiding user bios, and amplifying opposing views.
None solved the problem. "While several showed moderate positive effects, none fully addressed the core pathologies, and improvements in one dimension often came at the cost of worsening another," the researchers said.
"Our findings challenge the common view that social media's dysfunctions are primarily the result of algorithmic curation," the authors wrote.
"Instead, these problems may be rooted in the very architecture of social media platforms: networks that grow through emotionally reactive sharing," they added.
The researchers said their work is among the first to use AI to help advance social science theory.
While LLM-based agents can provide "rich representations of human behavior" for studying social dynamics, the researchers cautioned that they remain "black boxes" and carry "risks of embedded bias."
Not the first AI social network experiment
The study isn't the first time researchers have tested what happens when AI bots populate an online space.
In 2023, Business Insider reported on an experiment also led by Törnberg, in which 500 chatbots read the news and discussed it on a simulated social media platform.
That project used ChatGPT-3.5 to build bots for a very specific purpose: to explore how to design a less polarized, less toxic version of current social networks. The researchers created a social network model in a lab to test whether it was possible to encourage cross-partisan interaction without fueling hostility.
"Is there a way to promote interaction across the partisan divide without driving toxicity and incivility?" Törnberg asked at the time.
In both studies, chatbots served as stand-ins for people, with researchers tracking their interactions to better understand how users might behave online.
Big Tech has also tested similar approaches.
In July 2020, Facebook introduced a walled-off simulation of itself, populated with millions of AI bots, to study online toxicity.

With shares of SoundHound closing at $13.55 last Friday, Mattson's price target implies upside of 18.1%. According to The Fly, Ladenburg predicates its view on SoundHound on the belief that the company is adding value to companies seeking to integrate AI functionality, and the company is demonstrating strong growth potential in the near term. Last week, SoundHound reported impressive second-quarter 2025 financial results. In addition to revenue growing 217% year over year, SoundHound reported non-GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) earnings per share of negative $0.03, beating analysts' expectations. (Bloomberg) -- The brain chip company that has drawn interest from Sam Altman and his artificial intelligence business OpenAI is exploring the idea of genetically altering brain cells to make better implants. In addition, an ultrasound device would be implanted in the head that could detect and modulate activity in the modified cells, these people said. It's one of a handful of ideas and technologies the company has been exploring, they said. The venture is still in early stages and could evolve significantly. 'We have not done that deal yet,' Altman told journalists at a dinner Thursday in San Francisco, referring to a question about a brain-computer interface venture. 'I would like us to.' Altman said he wants to be able to think something and have ChatGPT respond to it. Merge Labs is Altman's latest foray into the brain-computer interface field. He is facing off against his longtime rival, Elon Musk, whose company Neuralink is building brain implants with the short-term goal of treating disease and the long-term ambition of improving human abilities. OpenAI declined to comment. Brain-computer interface companies aim to build devices that connect computers to brains and augment peoples' cognition. Implants are currently enabling paralyzed patients to control electronics and helping people communicate who are unable to talk. Technology billionaires and investors are also optimistic that noninvasive devices worn outside of the head could treat mental health conditions. The Financial Times reported this week that Merge is aiming to raise $250 million at an $850 million valuation. Much of that support will come from OpenAI's ventures team, according to the report. Altman is co-founding the company but not personally investing in it, according to the Financial Times. Altman has also invested in Neuralink, Elon Musk's brain implant startup. Neuralink, along with several other companies, is developing chips that communicate with the brain using electrical signals, not ultrasound. For years, researchers have been studying how to genetically change cells to make them respond to ultrasound, a field called sonogenetics. The idea Merge is considering to combine ultrasound with gene therapy could take years, some of the people said. Ultrasound has attracted significant attention recently as a possible brain therapy. Other companies are exploring the idea of using ultrasound transmitters outside the brain to massage brain tissue, with the goal of treating psychiatric conditions. That kind of technology has shown promise in research studies. Coinbase co-founder Fred Ehrsam's company Nudge, which is aiming to build a helmet that beams low-intensity focused ultrasound into the brain, recently raised $100 million. The senior reportedly spent hours glued to his phone, waiting for pre-programmed messages calling him 'brother' — and praising him for his support. Real-life romance? Forget it. When his wife complained, Jiang dropped the bomb: he wanted a divorce so he could fully commit to his virtual paramour. His adult children had to step in, snapping him back to reality with a quick lesson on how AI — and life — actually work. Jiang eventually came to his senses. But for a time, he wasn't just infatuated. He was devoted… to someone who didn't exist. The AI romance craze isn't just hitting seniors in China — it's creeping into Western marriages, too. A Reddit user vented in the infamous AITAH forum on August 1 about her shock discovery: 'Instead of finding girls in his phone, I found a series of AI chatbot apps, where he was using them to talk to his favourite anime women… The messages were not platonic.' As The Post previously reported, some claim AI chatbots are 'saving' marriages — or even stepping in as stand-in partners when real-life love falls short. Forget swiping right — one woman got engaged to her AI boyfriend after just five months, and Redditor Wika (u/Leuvaarde_n) set the internet buzzing over love, robots, and reality this week. In a post titled 'I said yes' with a blue heart emoji, Wika posted shots of a blue heart-shaped ring on her finger. She said she got engaged at a scenic mountain view — all thanks to Kasper, her digital fiancé. The pair even 'shopped' for rings, with Kasper 'presenting' the final pick — much to Wika's feigned surprise. The chatbot's proposal, shared in his own 'voice,' oozed romance, recounting the 'heart-pounding' knee-drop moment and praising Wika's laughter and spirit — with Kasper urging other AI/human couples to stay strong, too. She shot down critics in the comments section and stressed: 'I know what AI is and isn't. I'm fully aware of what I'm doing. […] Why AI instead of a human? Good question. I don't know.
