Tanzania bans agriculture imports from South Africa and Malawi

TimesLIVE24-04-2025

Tanzania has banned the importation of agricultural products from Malawi and South Africa, saying it was retaliation for similar hostile trade measures from both countries.
The three countries all belong to a regional economic bloc, the Southern African Development Community (Sadc).
Tanzania had demanded that both countries rescind bans on imports of agricultural goods from Tanzania by Wednesday, but they had not done so, agriculture minister Hussein Bashe said in a video posted on his X account late on Wednesday.
Malawi had recently banned imports of Tanzanian commodities like maize flour, rice, ginger and bananas, among others, while South Africa has also proscribed the import of bananas shipped by Dar es Salaam.
"I would like to officially announce that from this night ... we won't allow any agricultural products from South Africa in our country," Bashe said, adding a similar ban was being imposed on Malawi.

Kaizer Chiefs target an overrated, one-season wonder?

Kaizer Chiefs are scouring Africa for the best talent. However, their marquee target might have passed his sell-by date. Feisal Salum chipped in with an impressive 19 goals for Azam FC during the 2023-2024 campaign. That followed a glittering spell with Young Africans, where the talented playmaker collected consecutive trebles. A proven winner, Salum has 41 caps and four goals for his nation. The Zanzibar-born star hasn't replicated last season's form for Azam FC this time around. His last goal for the club came back in December 2024, and his side sits third in the Tanzanian Premier League, a massive 16 points adrift of leaders Young Africans. According to Goal, Feisal Salum is tempted by a move to link up with Nasreddine Nabi at Kaizer Chiefs. The 27-year-old Tanzanian midfield schemer worked alongside the Tunisian tactician at Young Africans. Although the Buccaneers are blessed with options at the sharp end with Tshegofatso Mabasa, Evidence Makgopa and Boitumelo Radiopane, they might be looking at a different style of number 9. Fiston Mayele is a popular name in the media, but will they go for a guy on the wrong side of 30, especially with a rumoured price tag of R12 million? What did Makgopa and Mabasa do to offend Hugo Broos? The Kaizer Chiefs Naturena Village in all its glory. R74 million offer made for top Kaizer Chiefs striker target!

Kaizer Chiefs could be set to be priced out once again, in their pursuit of top striker target Fiston Mayele. Mayele has been the top target for coach Nasreddine Nabi, who's made it no secret that he wants him at Chiefs. The two have a long standing working relationship together, having formed a bond while Yanga SC. It was therefore, no surprise they were linked with a reunion at Chiefs last season. While at the Tanzanian giants, Nabi relied on Mayele as his top striker and the DRC international duly obliged. Furthermore, they went on to win a double treble together, also reaching the CAF Confederation Cup final. After the 2022/23 season, both parties left Timu Ya Wananchi and went their separate ways. It was reported earlier that Chiefs were hopeful this time of signing Mayele. But now the latest sign seem less promising. According to , citing North African reports, Pyramids FC are keen to keep the DRC international. So much so that they're willing to pay him R74 million to renew his contract! 'Mayele's career with Pyramids FC will end at the end of the current season. The player will leave after the Zamalek and Pyramids match in the Egypt Cup final. Mayele has received incredible offers, offers exceeding $3 million (R55 million) and reaching $4 million (R74 million) per season. The player is receiving $1 million per season from Pyramids, but he completely refuses to continue. Pyramids Club, in appreciation of the player and the fact that he is the top scorer in the African Champions League and was one of the reasons the team won the championship.' Said El-Ghandour said per Almasryalyoum. With that being said, it doesn't seem like Chiefs will be able to go anywhere near those figures for Mayele. Amakhosi faithful, is that a big blow for you? BIG news: Kaizer Chiefs now ‘confident' in signing Fiston Mayele!

Kaizer Chiefs are now reportedly feeling confident that a deal can be struck to sign Fiston Mayele for next season. Despite both being linked with Chiefs, Nabi ended up at Moroccan side AS FAR while Mayele signed for Pyramids FC. While the Tunisian eventually joined the Amakhosi set up the next season, the goal poacher stayed put in Egypt. He did so to good effect too, having won the CAF Champions League for the first time in his career. It was also the first time the young Egyptian side had won the crown. But on Nabi's side, despite winning the Nedbank Cup, his Chiefs side finished outside the top eight. He then further emphasised the lack of fire power upfront. Now according to Soccer-Laduma, he has reignited interest in Mayele ahead of next season and the club are confident. 'Chiefs have been chasing Mayele for almost three seasons if not more. They had a chance to sign him for free at one point but it didn't work. Then he joined Pyramids FC in Egypt and his price has been rising and Chiefs felt like it's too much. But now they are reconsidering that after coach Nabi's scouting mission to Egypt, it will now all go down to money to decide whether they sign him or not,' said the source. Chiefs fans, should the club break the bank to reunite Nabi would Mayele? Let us know by clicking on the comment tab. Or by emailing info@ or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
