Wrong-way driver killed in crash on Interstate 85 in Belmont identified: Police
BELMONT, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A wrong-way crash early Friday morning on Interstate 85 in Belmont left one man dead and another injured, according to Belmont Police.
The crash happened around 1:23 a.m. near mile marker 25 on the northbound side of I-85. Just minutes earlier, police had received a report of a car driving in the wrong direction near Exit 27.

When Belmont officers arrived at the scene, they found two vehicles damaged: a 2021 Mercedes Sprinter van and a 2015 Hyundai Elantra.
Investigators determined that the Elantra was the vehicle traveling the wrong way. The driver, identified as Jorge Narino, 23, of Charlotte, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Mercedes van suffered minor injuries and was taken to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for treatment, police said.

Northbound lanes of I-85 were closed for several hours overnight while investigators from the Belmont Police Traffic and Crime Scene Units worked the scene. Several neighboring departments, including Gastonia, Mt. Holly, Lowell, and Cramerton, also responded.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who may have seen the vehicle before the crash, or has more information, is asked to contact Sergeant Kevin Wingate at 704-825-3792.

The NC Department of Transportation released a graphic detailing all the problems with the scam message. This DMV scam is the latest form of smishing that attempts to obtain revealing or sensitive information from individuals. It provides a fake link to pay the fines, creates a sense of urgency, and asks the recipient to reply 'Y' to the message, copy links into a browser, or confirm personal information. If you receive a text message from the DMV or any other state agency that demands money, the Federal Trade Commission recommends the following: Do not respond to the text or click any links. The DMV would not ask for your information or money by text. Report the text to the Federal Trade Commission at and/or file a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at Forward the message to 7726 (SPAM) to help your provider identify and block similar messages. NC Department of Transportation warns residents of DMV text scam The Department of Justice is receiving a higher volume of calls and complaints from consumers about this scam. These scams are targeting residents in multiple states and warn that if the recipient does not click on a link to make a payment, they may face suspended driving privileges, suspended vehicle registration, or ultimately be prosecuted.
