We are a step closer to the legendary Star Trek tricorder, a fictional device that enabled the intrepid crew of the Starship Enterprise to scan an alien planet for signs of life.
A
recent paper
by Nousias and colleagues shows how the instructions of life, contained in
DNA
, can be detected and analysed in greater detail than ever before from air samples.
While environmental DNA has been collected before from water, soil, sand and even air, the team combined air samples with deep sequencing methods that recover much more detailed information on the genetic code of animals, plants, humans and microbes in the environment.
This paper has a fascinating Irish connection. Some of the tiny air pumps used to collect samples were located at the zoology building in
Trinity College Dublin
, the Boyne estuary in Meath and Croghan mountain in Wicklow.

These samples were contrasted with air samples from Florida coastal and forest locations. Notable species detections in Dublin city centre included dust mites, high bacterial diversity and a substantial amount of bumblebee DNA – perhaps related to the success of Trinity's recent campuswide actions for pollinators.
DNA was also detected from plants that may be largely consumed rather than grown in the area, including peanuts, cannabis, opium poppy and the fungus psilocybe – 'magic mushrooms'.

Organisms in the environment, including humans, shed DNA into the air through the flaking of skin, production of pollen or saliva and all manner of other materials that are produced as they go about their daily lives. The materials we use and consume also shed DNA. The air is therefore a veritable genetic soup which can be sampled and the DNA sequenced.
Modern genetic sequencing called 'shotgun sequencing' enables sequences of DNA to be produced without an initial template, so genetic surprises may be found by comparing the sequences with databases of known species.
Methods such as 'genetic barcoding' require that you fish in the genetic soup with a specific set of organisms in mind, and your detections are therefore limited by what you are looking for. 'Shotgun sequencing' also enables you to quantify how much DNA of a particular genetic sequence is in the air sample, which means you can compare sites for the relative abundance of a particular animal, plant or microbe.
Of course human DNA is also detectable. An astonishing level of detail on the genetics of human populations can be retrieved from sampling the air alone. DNA from Dublin was characteristic of a diverse international city, whereas there were much fewer genetic types in the rural samples. While individual humans were not identified in this study, the technology now undoubtedly exists to enable individual human genomes to be analysed and identified from non-invasive samples, such as the air you have recently walked through.
As with many technological leaps there are risks and opportunities for the deployment of deep sequenced environmental DNA analysis from air samples. Rapid biodiversity assessment is urgently needed to identify, monitor and manage the health of our environment. Difficult to study and detect species such as nocturnal bats and moths, low-density predators and microscopic species can be sampled using these methods.
Environmental monitoring for detection of harmful pathogens is possible, with the potential for early-warning signals of disease outbreaks. In one week of sampling in Dublin city, 221 species with disease potential for humans were detected. Air can be scanned for the presence of allergens such as peanuts or for illegal narcotics.
It will also be possible to deploy this technology for harmful purposes, including military use, monitoring and targeting of particular human populations or individuals and the illicit sampling of natural resources in the search for new medicinal drugs. There are profound ethical consequences of large-scale genomic analysis of human populations and individuals that need to be urgently addressed and regulated.
While the lure of the tricorder is strong, there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure that the methods are robust and representative of the abundance and presence of particular species in the sample area.
International and national-level policy and regulation needs to be developed to ensure that the benefits of rapid biodiversity assessment can be achieved with guardrails in place to prevent potentially damaging uses.

I saw this red poppy with a bumblebee inside. I always thought that bees couldn't see red and so never visited red flowers. This bee seems very busy inside this one. J Rushe, Co Clare You are right: bees cannot see the colour red; their eyes don't see colours at that end of the spectrum. But at the other end, the ultraviolet end, they see very well. There are well-defined markings in ultraviolet in poppies and this is what attracts bees in to seek for food. Interestingly, the same species of poppy in the Middle East does not have these UV markings, and there they are pollinated by beetles. Linnet. Photograph supplied by S Woods What is this bird that I saw perched on a grass stalk in Irishtown Nature Reserve in early June? There were loads of them there. S Woods, Dublin This is a linnet, which has become quite uncommon because the intensification of our grasslands for cattle has greatly reduced the biodiversity of species found there. Linnets feed on a variety of seeds, especially thistles, and the use of herbicides and hedge removal has also contributed to their decline. Photograph supplied by C Birch The bush near where I live is covered in caterpillars, which are eating all the leaves. They seem to produce sheets of webs as well. This is a close-up of one caterpillar. C Birch, Dublin This is the box tree caterpillar, which can decimate any species of Buxus – the species used in box hedging, which will grow into a sizeable bush if not clipped. This species of moth was first recorded here in 2017 and has spread rapidly since, to the detriment of box hedges. The cherry ermine moth has also been busy this summer, defoliating species of flowering cherries and covering them with webs too. Whole cherry trees can be affected, as was one in Dublin's Herbert Park, among others. Bee swarms. Photograph supplied by Fred Fitzsimons There were two swarms of bees side by side hanging from a cherry tree in my garden here in Carrickmacross. They appeared at the same time. The big one is 12-15 inches long. Does this mean that two queens left the hive at the same time? They were recovered by a beekeeper. Fred Fitzsimons, Co Monaghan The old resident queen who has overwintered in the hive will leave with a swarm if the hive gets too full, leaving the about-to-hatch new queens to fight to the death for the queenship of the vacated hive. There is only ever one resident queen bee in a hive. The swarm, with the queen inside, can cluster on a convenient tree waiting for its scouts to return with information of a suitable place to take up future residence. Two swarms with two different queens from two different hives coincidentally used this halting site at the same time. The weather was really good in May and bee numbers increased enormously. Coots at UCD. Photograph supplied by M Bell Coots are breeding on the pond in UCD, the most recent one beside the law school. They have at least two young. M Bell, Co Wicklow Build it (or in this case, excavate it) and they will come. This – the most recent UCD lake – was constructed in 2013, replacing an existing car park, and is a haven for biodiversity. Coots prefer shallow water with lots of bottom vegetation for feeding, with reed beds and other waterside plants for nesting cover. The male brings the nesting material (dead water plants) and the female arranges it and lays the eggs. Static review: A stranded astronaut, an Irish radio ham and snatches of a strange, poignant frequency

Static Peacock stage, Abbey Theatre, Dublin ★★★☆☆ In 1991 Sergei Krikalev was launched into space on what was meant to be a four-month mission. But by then the Soviet Union had collapsed, and the country that had promised to bring him home no longer existed. Remarkably, during the 10 months for which the cosmonaut was left stranded aboard the Mir space station, he managed to make contact with a handful of amateur radio operators, including a man in rural Ireland. It's the kind of archival news story that's irresistible to a writer. Unsurprisingly, it caught the imagination of Jimmy McAleavey, who used it as a springboard for Static. But this is not a dramatisation of those events. Instead the play fictionalises this moment of unlikely connection, turning it into something more allegorical and, sadly, a bit flatter. Visually, the production is captivating. Alyson Cummins's set is simple but powerful, a retro technological dreamscape of blinking devices, stacked in the dark, that evoke circuit boards, night cities and distant constellations. On one side of the stage sits Moonman, a lonely recluse in Donegal, played with an unexpectedly tender touch by Dan Gordon. On the other is Spaceman, the archetypal all-American action hero, played with just the right note of performative tinniness by Seán Mahon. Between them spins a glowing toy Earth. An acute problem has arisen. Spaceman, stranded in a failing space station, has lost all official channels of communication and will soon drift fatally off course unless someone on Earth intervenes. That someone, unfortunately, is Moonman, who's too anxious to leave his home, let alone persuade anyone that he's in touch with a dying astronaut. READ MORE Static: Seán Mahon as Spaceman. Photograph: Rich Davenport Even if he could bring himself to call for help, who would believe him? And perhaps, deep down, he doesn't really want to save him. Perhaps he's so starved of conversation that he'd rather keep him talking, suspended in a shared solitude. The characters are drawn from different tonal universes. This contrast brings flashes of humour and unexpected lyricism. McAleavey's dialogue is attuned to the strange intimacy of radio and to the intoxicated grandeur of early American space mythology: the endless frontier, the dream of expansion, the boyish hope and the looming void. Static: Dan Gordon as Moonman. Photograph: Rich Davenport But the arc of the play is ultimately too neat. To return to Earth, Spaceman must coax Moonman out of isolation. They both need the other to return to the world. The two men are revealed to be more alike than different: both ruled by fear, one hiding in his room, the other in space. There's a satisfying symmetry to the structure, but it leans toward the schematic. Dichotomies are set up and then cleanly reversed. The psychological unravelling tracks on a level of sense but never feels true on an experiential or emotional level. The problem is partly formal: the dialogue-heavy structure becomes an exhaustive sounding-out of themes rather than a dramatic unfolding. It begins to feel, aptly, static. Still, there are moments when the play seems to catch a strange and poignant frequency, something bruised, offbeat and humane. Static is at the Abbey Theatre , Dublin, until Friday, July 18th

How many regulators does it take to completely stifle Ireland's AI innovation?

Much of the talk at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence meeting on Tuesday centred on finding the balance between controlling the risks and harnessing the potential of AI within Ireland's regulatory framework. 'We can't afford to stand still,' Patricia Scanlon of the AI Advisory Council told members of the Oireachtas, going on to repeatedly stress the importance of 'implementing serious regulatory reforms' and avoiding having a 'fragmented response' to AI. The regulatory response to this new technology is critical, the Oireachtas repeatedly heard. In Leinster House, a building in which phrases such as 'joined-up thinking' and 'co-ordinated response' echo around the halls, it was notable to hear the experts say there are eight separate regulatory bodies over AI in Ireland. READ MORE Based on work by the Department of Enterprise on the rollout of the EU-wide Artificial Intelligence Act, there will be a 'complex' web of 'cross-sectoral regulation' due to how vast an area the regulation will cover. 'There are actually going to be eight competent authorities or regulators under the Act,' Prof Deirdre Aherne, law professor at Trinity College Dublin and a member of the AI Advisory Council, told the committee. Fear not, however, that there may be too many cooks. These regulatory bodies will also co-ordinate with other bodies that have sectoral expertise. Added on top of that 'distributed' regulatory model, the committee heard, will be a 'co-ordinating body' that will look to manage the overlaps between the bodies. Ireland's regulatory framework will then feed into an EU-wide approach to the new technology's adoption. Furthermore, in its recent paper on digital innovation, the business lobbying group Ibec identified 'at least 30 different State entities and 10 plans that can influence the direction of Ireland's digital and AI ambitions'. It noted one Cabinet committee, six departments, three Oireachtas committees, 10 departmental plans and 20 agencies that have various responsibilities related to implementing different aspects of the EU digital rule book. It all begs the question: will eight separate regulators, 30 State agencies and 10 plans be enough to stifle Ireland's AI innovation? Perhaps the State's response to AI needs more joined-up thinking at the helm, more opportunities for cross-sectoral collaboration and synergistic thinking, and maybe even one more regulatory body.
