Los Angeles Dodgers acquire former All-Star reliever Alexis Díaz in trade with Cincinnati Reds

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired former All-Star reliever Alexis Diaz from the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday in a trade for minor league pitcher Mike Villani.
The Dodgers moved right-hander Evan Phillips to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster for Díaz, who had a 12.00 ERA in six games for Cincinnati this season.
Díaz finished fifth in voting for NL Rookie of the Year in 2022, and he was chosen for the NL All-Star team in 2023 when he went 9-6 with a 3.07 ERA and 37 saves. He recorded 28 saves in 32 opportunities last season with a 1.30 WHIP, but he also began a decline that continued into this season.
Díaz lost his job as Cincinnati's closer last month, and he was demoted to Triple-A Louisville nearly a month ago despite making $4.5 million this season.
The 28-year-old Díaz is the brother of Mets closer Edwin Diaz.
Villani, a Long Beach State product, was the Dodgers' 13th-round pick in last year's amateur draft.
Phillips went on the injured list May 7 with elbow discomfort, and his recovery does not appear to be going well. Manager Dave Roberts said earlier this week that Phillips' inability to begin a throwing program was 'a little concerning.'
Phillips is among of 14 Dodgers pitchers on the injured lis, a group making more than $100 million combined this season. The injured arms include starters Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Roki Sasaki, and the relievers include Phillips, Kirby Yates, Blake Treinen and Brusdar Graterol.
Phillips was a key component of the eventual World Series champions' bullpen last year, and he earned 42 saves over the past two seasons.

"With the 'Phins sitting on just $14 million in available cap space — the sixth-lowest in the league — a breakup makes plenty of fiscal sense." Advertisement Kay likes the Cardinals as an ideal trade destination for Hill because it would provide them with a one-two punch at a position the team has not pursued aggressively in the draft or trade market so far this offseason. "The team is on the rise under head coach Jonathan Gannon, going from 4-13 in his first season to 8-9 last year. The receiving corps still needs a jolt, however, as Arizona avoided making any major splashes in free agency or the draft at the position," Kay wrote. "While the Cardinals have a foundational pass-catcher in Marvin Harrison Jr. to build around for the long haul, adding Hill would give quarterback Kyler Murray the weapons he needs to contend in wide-open NFC West races this coming year and over the next few seasons." Hill, who was named to the NFL's 2010s All-Decade Team, has put together a laundry list of accomplishments since his rookie season in 2016. He is a Super Bowl champion, a five-time First-Team All-Pro, and an eight-time Pro Bowler. Torres, Greene lead Tigers to rainy 11-5 victory over the Reds
Gleyber Torres homered twice and Riley Greene drove in four runs to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Cincinnati Reds 11-5 on a rainy Friday night. Greene had a solo homer in the third and a three-run double in the sixth as the Tigers improved to 19-4 in series openers. TJ Friedl and Elly De La Cruz homered for the Reds. Torres homered on the first pitch from Nick Martinez (4-7). It was Torres' fourth career leadoff homer, with the first three coming for the Yankees. TJ Friedl tied it with a third-inning homer off Keider Montero (3-1), but Greene homered over the Cincinnati bullpen to make it 2-1 in the bottom of the inning. Javier Báez homered in the fourth to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead, but Elly De La Cruz hit his 14th homer in the fifth — the fifth solo homer of the game. Detroit finally created some distance with a four-run sixth. Martinez walked Báez to start the inning and was replaced by Scott Barlow, who allowed a single and a walk to load the bases. Torres ended Barlow's outing with a sacrifice fly, but Taylor Rogers didn't fare any better. Jahmai Jones' infield single reloaded the bases and Greene made it 7-2 with a three-run double past a diving Spencer Steer in left. An intentional walk and an error loaded the bases for the third time in the inning, but Ian Gibault replaced Rogers and got the final two outs. Torres homered again in the seventh and Báez hit an RBI double in a three-run eighth. De La Cruz had an RBI double and scored in a three-run ninth for Cincinnati. The game started seven minutes late due to rain that fell throughout the night. If Steer could have made the diving catch in the sixth inning, the Reds could have gotten out of it only down 4-2. Rogers has 201 career RBIs. making him the first Tigers hitter to reach 200 before his 25th birthday since Travis Fryman in 1993. Detroit RHP Jack Flaherty (5-6, 3.41) was set to face RHP Brady Singer (6-4, 4.59) on Saturday.

Quatraro said that they were waiting for a few test results to come back before determining severity and timeline. Doesn't sound like it will be a quick IL stint like last time, though.' Rogers reports that the Royals had originally hoped for Cole Ragans to return to the mound soon after initially injuring his shoulder in the previous week. But Ragans felt something wrong with his shoulder despite Kansas City giving him a few extra days to rest to manage the injury. 'Ragans felt shoulder soreness after his start last week against STL. Team had pushed Ragans back a few days in the rotation to see if it would go away. He was feeling OK, then it popped up again, playing catch [Tuesday]. That led to getting scans/testing.' Advertisement The Royals will continue to monitor Ragans' status closely. In an ideal world, Ragans avoids a tear in his rotator cuff and only needs to be on the 10 or 15-day IL. But a trip to the 60-day IL is certainly in play. It's been a rocky season for the 2024 All-Star, as Ragans has not been as effective this season as he was last year.
