The Colombian caught the attention with sensational performances on the international stage and in the Portuguese League with FC Porto. Then, at Anfield, he took his status to the next level. Not long after he arrived in England, Díaz helped Liverpool to a domestic cup double, and his performance in the League Cup final against Chelsea in particular helped put his name in lights. A 'Dennis Bergkamp style' spin in that game left Chelsea defender Reece James for dead and made the whole of Wembley stadium gasp in awe. Fans could clearly see the Latin flair everyone talked about. Yet, he scored 17 times and made 5 assists over the year. He was a key figure in Liverpool's title win. Beyond the trophies, goals, and assists, Luis Díaz became a fan favourite for his flair on the ball, tireless work rate, and commitment off it. Díaz's attitude was exceptional, and at times what he lacked in front of goal he more than made up for with his pressing and defensive work. Díaz was also menacing on the counter attack and incredibly unselfish. Luis Díaz's bond with the club deepened after his father was kidnapped in Colombia for 12 days in late 2023. The whole Liverpool community rallied around the player and his family, and since his father's release, he has regularly been seen wearing his son's shirt in the crowd alongside Liverpool fans. Liverpool fans also created a popular anthem just for Díaz with reference to his home town of Barrancas in northern Colombia. This Colombia side has the potential to challenge the world's top teams at the tournament. Padres rally to snap Mets' 7-game win streak
Reuters San Diego Padres catcher Elias Diaz (17) celebrates after hitting a walk-off single during the ninth inning against the New York Mets at Petco Park. (Mandatory Credit: Denis Poroy-Imagn Images) Elias Diaz's clutch two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the San Diego Padres to a dramatic 7-6 win over the New York Mets on Monday night, ending the Mets' seven-game winning streak. Xander Bogaerts led off the ninth with a single off Gregory Soto (0-3). A bunt by pinch hitter José Iglesias led to a throwing error, and after a strikeout and a fielder's choice, Díaz came through with a liner to left-center, allowing Iglesias to score the winning run. Robert Suarez (3-4) picked up the win despite blowing the save in the top of the ninth when Ronny Mauricio crushed a solo homer to tie the game 6-6. San Diego overcame a 5-1 deficit, sparked by a wild fifth inning. Mark Vientos had given the Mets a commanding lead with a two-out grand slam off Padres starter Dylan Cease in the top half of the frame. But in the bottom half, the Padres sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs, highlighted by Luis Arraez's two-run homer off the right field foul pole - his sixth of the season. Manny Machado and Bryce Johnson also contributed RBI hits, and Díaz tied the game with a single off Huascar Brazoban. Errors and mental lapses hurt New York, including Brazoban's failure to cover first on a key grounder. Cease struggled with command, allowing five runs on five hits and five walks in 4 2/3 innings. Mets starter Frankie Montas exited after allowing five runs over 4 1/3 Mendoza, the Mets' manager, was ejected in the third for arguing a called strikeout on Juan Soto.

Luis Díaz Set to Leave Liverpool
TDT | Manama Luis Díaz's Liverpool journey is drawing to a close. The Colombian forward is set to join Bayern Munich in a €75 million move, ending a three-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield that brought both flair and frustration — and, ultimately, silverware. Signs of a departure had been visible for months. A heartfelt social media post by his now-wife Gera Ponce following Liverpool's title win in May read like a farewell. The family's celebration in front of the Kop, wrapped in Colombian flags, now marks a closing chapter. Since arriving from Porto in January 2022, Díaz made 148 appearances and scored 41 goals, becoming a fan favourite for his directness, tenacity, and infectious energy. His Liverpool career began brightly, with an assist 10 minutes into his debut and an immediate place in a reshuffled attack that saw Sadio Mané move centrally to accommodate him on the left. He played all three domestic finals in his debut half-season, contributing to Liverpool's League Cup and FA Cup wins, though the team fell short in both the Premier League and Champions League. A serious knee injury disrupted his second campaign, but he returned to help win another Carabao Cup in 2024 and played a key role in the club's run to the Premier League title last season. Off the pitch, Díaz's family endured trauma when his father was kidnapped and held hostage for 12 days in Colombia — a moment that united the club and country in support. Under new head coach Arne Slot, Díaz's role evolved. Slot deployed him more centrally, at times as a false nine, and the approach yielded his most productive season yet: 17 goals in all competitions, including a Champions League hat-trick and key contributions in wins over Spurs, Manchester United, and Crystal Palace. Still, Liverpool's willingness to part ways reflects several underlying factors. Díaz rejected two contract extension offers, and with just two years left on his deal and interest mounting from Europe's elite, Liverpool saw the logic in selling now rather than risk losing value later. Bayern's improved offer — rising from €67.5m to €75m — ultimately shifted the club's stance. The transfer has proceeded smoothly, with Díaz training throughout Liverpool's Asia tour before being granted permission to finalise the move. The departure is amicable on both sides. From Liverpool's perspective, left-sided depth played a role in the decision. Cody Gakpo, who scored 18 times last season, is seen as a natural successor, while new signing Hugo Ekitike can also operate from the flank. The emergence of 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha, a standout in pre-season, has further reinforced belief in the next generation. Díaz may not have matched the lasting impact of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, or Roberto Firmino, but his contribution was significant. He departs a title winner, a well-liked figure in the dressing room, and a player who always gave his all — even when consistency eluded him. Now 28, he leaves for a new challenge and a more lucrative contract in Germany. His time at Liverpool may not have defined an era, but it helped shape one. If he returns to Anfield in Bayern colours, the reception will likely be warm, and richly deserved.

Díaz's walk-off single lifts the Padres to a wild 7-6 win against the Mets
Associated Press SAN DIEGO (AP) — Elias Diaz singled with two outs in the ninth inning to bring in Jose Iglesias with the winning run, and the San Diego Padres beat the New York Mets 7-6 in a wild game Monday night to end their seven-game winning streak. The Padres chased Díaz into shallow right field in celebration. Iglesias, who played for New York last year, reached on a bunt that new Mets reliever Gregory Soto (0-3) fielded and threw wide of shortstop Francisco Lindor, allowing Xander Bogaerts to take second. Iglesias advanced on Jake Cronenworth's bunt that forced Bogaerts at third and then scored on Díaz's single to left-center. Ronny Mauricio tied the game for the NL East-leading Mets with a one-out homer in the ninth off All-Star closer Robert Suarez (3-4), who was trying for his major league-leading 31st save. Padres starter Dylan Cease was hit in the back of the head by a one-hopper off Lindor's bat with one out in the third, but remained in the game after being checked by trainers. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was ejected one batter later by plate umpire Emil Jimenez after Juan Soto took a called third strike. The Mets took a 5-1 lead in the fifth when Mark Vientos hit his first career grand slam, one inning after right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. made a spectacular leaping catch to rob him of a two-run homer. The Padres rallied for five runs in the bottom of the inning, on seven hits and a walk, as well as a break when reliever Huascar Brazoban was late covering first on Cronenworth's two-out shot to first baseman Pete Alonso that went for an RBI single. The highlight was Luis Arraez's two-run homer high off the right-field foul pole followed by an epic bat flip. Key moments Tatis robbing Vientos and then making a sliding catch of Mauricio's sinking liner in the sixth. Key stat It was the Padres' fifth walk-off win this season. Up next Mets LHP Sean Manaea (1-1, 2.19 ERA), who pitched for the Padres in 2022, is scheduled to start Tuesday night. The Padres hadn't announced a starter. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 1
