Brewers find another way to win as Mets drop sixth straight

William Contreras hit an insurance two-run homer immediately after his inning- ending flyout was negated by a pitch clock violation Saturday night for the host Milwaukee Brewers, who beat the skidding New York Mets 7-4. The Brewers rode the four-run seventh to their eighth win in as many games this month. Milwaukee has won 11 of its last 12 overall to improve its record to a baseball-best 72-44. Pete Alonso tied Darryl Strawberry atop the Mets franchise's all-time home run list by hitting the first of the team's three solo homers Saturday, but New York still lost its sixth straight game and for the 10th time in 11 games. Alonso's homer in the top of the second inning was his 26th of the season and the 252nd of his career. Sal Frelick hit into a game-tying RBI groundout off Ryne Stanek (2-6) in the seventh inning. Ryan Helsley relieved Stanek, and Isaac Collins delivered the two-out, go-ahead run-scoring single two batters later when his grounder skipped past Mets third baseman Ronny Mauricio. Helsley then committed a pitch clock violation on Contreras' flyout to right. Contreras followed with a 399-foot homer to left-center field. The rally made a winner of Jared Koenig (4-1), who tossed a hitless seventh. Abner Uribe struck out all three batters he faced in the eighth before Trevor Megill notched his 28th save with a one-hit ninth. Milwaukee starter Tobias Myers allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four over 3 1/3 innings. Blake Perkins and Andrew Vaughn scored on a two-out error by Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor in the second, and Brice Turang hit a game-tying homer in the fourth. Starling Marte and Juan Soto also homered for the Mets while Cedric Mullins had an RBI single. Mets opener Reed Garrett tossed a perfect first inning in his first big league start before Frankie Montas gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts over three innings of bulk relief.

Pete Alonso hits 252nd home run to match Darryl Strawberry for Mets record

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Pete Alonso hit his 252nd career home run Saturday night, tying the New York Mets record held by Darryl Strawberry for 37 years. The 30-year-old Alonso connected against Milwaukee Brewers starter Tobias Myers leading off the second inning for his 26th homer this season, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. The 413-foot shot to left-center came on a 1-2 fastball at the top of the strike zone. It was Alonso's fourth homer in eight games, since he went deep Aug. 1 against San Francisco to end an 0-for-19 slump. A homegrown star drafted by the Mets in 2016, Alonso broke into the big leagues with a bang in 2019, hitting 53 home runs to set a major league rookie record and establish a franchise high for a single season. The five-time All-Star has reached 40 two other times and been one of the most consistent sluggers in baseball since his arrival. After a protracted negotiation, he returned to the Mets as a free agent in February on a $54 million, two-year contract that includes a $24 million player option for 2026, which Alonso will likely decline. The only other active players who lead their current franchise in home runs are Manny Machado (Padres) and Mike Trout (Angels). Giancarlo Stanton, now with the New York Yankees, holds the Miami mark with 267 for the Marlins. Strawberry broke the previous Mets record with his 155th home run on May 3, 1988, passing Dave Kingman. The sweet-swinging outfielder hit 252 in 1,109 games for New York during his first eight major league seasons from 1983-90. He later played for the Dodgers, Giants and Yankees, finishing his 17-year career with 335 homers. Alonso played his 963rd game Saturday night. The durable first baseman has appeared in 370 straight, a team record. The Diamondbacks and Padres are the lone major league clubs that haven't had a player hit more than 252 homers for them. Luis Gonzalez holds the Arizona record with 224, and Machado entered Saturday with 187 for San Diego.

Grisham hits go-ahead homer as Yankees beat Astros 5-4 after blowing late lead

NEW YORK (AP) — Trent Grisham hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning and the New York Yankees beat the Houston Astros 5-4 on Saturday after blowing a two-run lead. HT Image Grisham snapped a 4-all tie when he drove a full-count fastball off Bryan King (3-3) into the second deck in right field. Grisham homered after Camilo Doval and David Bednar (5-3) combined to blow a 4-2 lead in the eighth, when the Yankees were charged with two errors. Doval was charged with a throwing error on a grounder by Jesús Sánchez and left fielder Jasson Domínguez committed another on an RBI single by Jose Altuve. Bednar was one strike away from getting the second out but walked Christian Walker. He kept the game tied by striking out Yanier Diaz and Taylor Trammell. Giancarlo Stanton drove in two runs, including an RBI single in the fifth that gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Stanton started in right in his first appearance in the field since playing left field at Fenway Park on Sept. 14, 2023. He caught a lineout by Carlos Correa to end the first for his first chance in right field since Sept. 9, 2023, and was lifted after seven innings. Luis Gil allowed two runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings, becoming the first Yankee starter to get an out in the sixth since July 30. Gil struck out seven and walked one after struggling with his command in his season debut on Sunday. Stanton drew a bases-loaded walk in his first appearance against Framber Valdez before singling to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Ben Rice lifted a sacrifice fly after Stanton walked and Cody Bellinger scored on the catcher's double-play grounder in the fifth. Jeremy Pena hit a leadoff homer and Correa hit a tying RBI single in the fourth as the Astros lost for the 17th time in 27 games. Bednar pitched a 1-2-3 ninth after the Yankees regained the lead. Grisham had three hits for the first time since July 6. He entered the game with five hits in his previous 36 at-bats. New York LHP Max Fried (12-4, 2.78 ERA) pitches Sunday's series finale. The Astros did not announce a starter ___ AP MLB:
