Philadelphia Flyers prospect Jack Berglund impresses at 2025 World Junior Summer Showcase
Philadelphia Flyers second-round pick in 2024, Jack Berglund, had a coming-out party of his own at the 2025 World Junior Summer Showcase in Minneapolis, with little left in doubt about what his ultimate role will be as a high-scoring, two-way center.
Jack Berglund was among the strongest performers at the showcase tournament with seven points in five games to prove himself one of Sweden's best prospects for its 2026 World Junior Championship roster.
Jack Berglund paces Sweden with highlight-reel two-way scoring ability
Jack Berglund arrived at the 2025 World Junior Summer Showcase with great expectations—and broke them. Already the perceived virtual lock for the Swedish national junior squad, he seized his moment in Minneapolis.
Not only did he highlight his trademark physicality and defensive role, but Jack Berglund also laid to rest the one question mark on his resume: his offensive ceiling.
Philadelphia Flyers prospect posted five goals and two assists in five games, with three even-strength and two power-play scores. He started the tournament with a glove-side right circle bullet off Team USA Blue and finished his showcase career with a power play tip against Finland, a game in which tension was running high and Jack Berglund was involved in numerous scrums.

also impresses
Jack Berglund wasn't the only Philadelphia Flyers forward prospect to impress at the Summer Showcase. Heikki Ruohonen was often matched up against Jack Berglund in the series with Sweden and played equally well on offense and defense. His sole score was in the closing game against Sweden when he scored an opening-minute, sharp-angle goal. Finland lost, but Ruohonen had exhibited the poise, IQ, and adaptability that made him a 2025 World Junior Championship sensation.
Heikki Ruohonen's development continues to amaze Flyers developmental personnel, particularly now that he soon will start his NCAA career.

Victoria Mboko: The Congolese immigrant, who admired Serena Williams and is now into WTA Montreal final
Victoria Mboko has had a dream run in Montreal, her home tournament. (AP) Victoria Mboko, an 18-year-old American-born Canadian tennis player, advanced to the final of the National Bank Open in Montreal after claiming upset victories over top seed Coco Gauff, Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. The teenager, who began 2025 ranked 333rd, is now set to move into the top 50 when rankings are updated next week after accumulating 52 wins and nine losses this year. Mboko is the first Canadian to reach the WTA 1000 event's final since Bianca Andreescu's title run in 2019 and earlier the youngest woman to reach the semis since Belinda Bencic's 2015 win in Toronto. She will face four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka in the final. The youngest of four tennis-playing siblings from a Congolese immigrant family, Mboko made her WTA Tour main-draw debut at age 15 in the 2022 Canadian Open doubles draw. Her first professional singles title came at the ITF W25 tournament in Saskatoon in 2022, which she successfully defended in 2023. Victoria Mboko will rise to the top-50 of WTA Rankings next week after a big two weeks in Montreal. (AP) Her breakthrough 2025 season began with victories in two ITF W35 tournaments in the Caribbean. She received a Miami wild card, where she secured her first tour-level victory over Camila Osorio before pushing Paula Badosa to a deciding set. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you wash your bath towel often? I remember practising with her when she was 14 or 15 years old and she was smacking forehands and bowling me off the court, so we all knew she would be really good," said former Wimbledon finalist Genie Bouchard. "I'm very impressed with how cool, calm and collected she was on the court. She looked much more mature than her 18 years of age. You see her on the court and she's handling it like she's done it a hundred times," Bouchard added. After her loss to Mboko, Coco Gauff praised the rising star: "She's very athletic. She's a great ball striker, and she seems pretty positive out there on the court, doesn't get really too negative. I think she has a great support system around her, and that's important when you're young and on tour." Elena Rybakina and Victoria Mboko at the net after their semi-final match in Montreal. (AP) Mboko's success stems from her family's support, particularly her siblings. Her sister Gracia, who played tennis for the University of Denver, and brother Kevin, a tennis coach in suburban Toronto, help keep her focused during tournaments. "There is so much happening even behind the scenes," Mboko said. "I feel like my family has been doing a good job of keeping me, I guess, isolated from it all. I have just been enjoying the moment. I have been enjoying time with my sister and my brother. I don't have so many people around me, and it's kept me very calm and very comfortable." The Mboko family moved from the Democratic Republic of Congo nearly three decades ago to escape the Congo Wars of the mid-1990s. After living in North Carolina, where Victoria was born, they settled in Toronto when she was an infant. Mboko's game features aggressive play combined with variety, including drop shots and slices. She can serve at 120 mph and grew up admiring Serena Williams. Her coach is former world No. 3 Nathalie Tauziat, known for her varied playing style. Her recent success includes qualifying for her first Grand Slam main draw at the French Open, reaching the third round before falling to Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen. She also stunned 25th-seeded Magdalena Frech in the first round at Wimbledon. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Jen Pawol makes history as MLB's first female umpire in regular-season game
This weekend marks a historic milestone for Major League Baseball ( MLB ) as Jen Pawol becomes the first woman to umpire a regular-season Major League game. Pawol, a 48-year-old veteran minor league umpire from New Jersey, will officiate during the Miami Marlins-Atlanta Braves series at Truist Park in Atlanta, including both games of Saturday's doubleheader and the series finale on Sunday behind home plate. Jen Pawol Pawol's journey is the culmination of nearly a decade of professional umpiring experience. She began her career in 2016 at the rookie ball level and steadily climbed the ranks, becoming the first female umpire at the Triple-A level in 34 years in 2023. She also served as the home-plate umpire for the Triple-A Championship that year. That experience earned her a spot as a Triple-A crew chief and a position on MLB's call-up list, making her eligible to substitute in major league games when needed. The doubleheader weekend created the opportunity for MLB to add a fifth umpire to the crew, enabling Pawol's debut on the major league field. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Fastest Way to Overcome Knee Pain and Swelling Wellnee Undo Before umpiring professionally, Pawol was a standout collegiate softball player at Hofstra University and even represented the United States on the women's national baseball team. She then umpired NCAA softball from 2010 to 2016 before transitioning into professional baseball umpiring after attending MLB's Umpire Training Academy in 2015. MLB Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. praised Pawol's achievement, stating, 'This historic accomplishment in baseball is a reflection of Jen's hard work, dedication and love of the game. She has earned this opportunity, and we are proud of the strong example she has set, particularly for all the women and young girls who aspire to roles on the field.' Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also highlighted the significance of inclusion, commenting, 'Baseball's done a great job of being completely inclusive... It's good for the game.' Live Events Women in the business Pawol's historic promotion follows broader trends of breaking gender barriers in major U.S. professional sports leagues. The NBA led the way by incorporating women into full-time officiating roles nearly three decades ago. The NFL appointed its first full-time female official in 2015, who later became the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl in 2021. Women have also recently officiated at the men's soccer World Cup, further advancing representation in professional sports officiating. Despite decades of progress, Pawol's MLB debut remains groundbreaking for baseball, a league that has a storied history of breaking civil rights barriers, most notably with Jackie Robinson nearly 80 years ago. The Jackie Robinson Foundation publicly congratulated Pawol on continuing that legacy of equality in sports. The arrival of the first female umpire in an MLB regular-season game is timely as the league navigates a changing landscape in diversity initiatives and international player inclusion. Jen Pawol's story reinforces umpiring as a viable professional career for men and women alike, as she herself pointed out, 'This is a viable career becoming a professional umpire – men and women, girls and boys. I didn't know that the first several years when I got into umpiring in amateur ball for 10 years.' Her debut weekend officiating at the highest level of baseball will be watched closely as a landmark moment in the sport's history and a significant step forward for gender equality in professional sports. This historic event is scheduled for August 9-10, 2025, at Truist Park, witnessing a trailblazer breaking new ground for women in baseball umpiring.
