Tipped off Lko cops put paid to ingenuity of liquor smugglers
Late on Wednesday night, the team seized 7,776 tetra packs of illegal liquor worth nearly ₹18 lakh.
The consignment was coming from Rajasthan and bound for dry and poll-bound Bihar, so said the two men arrested for transporting the liquor.
Tipped off, the team had laid in wait and intercepted a pick-up vehicle, near Uttaretiya underpass on Kisan Path. The vehicle was properly covered in thick, black plastic, which when uncovered revealed stacked empty vegetable crates.
Behind a couple of rows of these, was what the officials were hunting for. They recovered 162 boxes containing Royal Classic Whiskey manufactured in Rajasthan, totaling 1,400 litres.
Police arrested two smugglers including Sonu Bagaria, 25, and Sitaram Bagaria, 19, both residents of Khudiala village in Jaipur, Rajasthan. They were using a Mahindra pick-up with a fake UP number plate (UP80HR5336), while the actual vehicle registration (RJ47GA2782) was from Rajasthan.
During questioning, the accused confessed to being part of an inter-state smuggling racket for the past 7–8 months. They admitted they were paid ₹7,000 per trip by a man named Kamal Sharan from their village, who arranged the vehicle and the liquor. Once in Bihar, the consignment was to be handed over to one Lalu Ram, who remains at large.
Excise inspector Ram Shyam Tripathi confirmed that smugglers had erased MRPs from packaging to sell the liquor at inflated prices in Bihar, where prohibition laws are in force and demand for alcohol fuels black market rates up to three times the original cost.
This was the second such bust within four days.
Deputy excise commissioner Rakesh Kumar Singh said that on July 19, the excise department had caught a truck near Kabirpur village on Sultanpur Road and recovered over 14,000 liquor bottles worth ₹30 lakh. Smugglers had hidden the liquor under construction material.
Both accused in the latest case have been sent to jail, and a case has been lodged at PGI Police Station under sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita and Excise Act. Police are now trying to trace the vehicle owner, Pradhan Bagaria, and the main conspirator, Kamal Sharan.

A Delhi Police constable was injured after his team was attacked by a mob armed with sticks and bricks during a raid on a bootlegger in Southeast Delhi's Badarpur area Monday evening. According to the Delhi Police, they received a credible tip-off at around 7 pm Monday regarding a large consignment of illicit liquor being stored at the residence of Kailash, 63, an allegedly well-known bootlegger with multiple previous cases under the Excise Act. Acting on the tip-off, a raiding team, dressed in civilian clothes, reached the location at the Gautampuri area in Badarpur around 8 pm. 'During reconnaissance, Constables Lakhan and Satbir observed Kailash and an associate selling liquor openly on the staircase. When confronted, Kailash incited the crowd, shouting 'Aaj ek-do ko jaan se maar do tab dhanda theek chalega (Kill one or two of them, only then our business will run smoothly)',' said Hemant Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East). In the ensuing violence, Kailash, his wife Seeta, his associate Sameer, a minor, and several others allegedly assaulted the police team using sticks and bricks, said the police. Constable Satbir sustained grievous injuries to the head and body and lost consciousness at the scene. He was immediately shifted to Apollo Hospital in Sarita Vihar, where doctors declared him unfit for statement. Additional police personnel were called in and managed to control the situation. Kailash, Sameer, and the 17-year-old boy were apprehended on the spot, while others managed to flee in the chaos. Seeta was later arrested, said the police. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at the Badarpur Police Station under sections 221 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 132 (assault or criminal force on public servant), 109(1) (attempted murder), 112 (petty organised crime), and 3(5) (common intent) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Key accused Kailash has over eight previous cases under the Excise Act, and Seeta, 50, is also reportedly involved in bootlegging activities. The minor involved in the incident has been apprehended, and is being dealt with as per the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act, said the police. The police said further investigation is underway to trace the remaining accused, and to dismantle the network of illicit liquor distribution operating in the area.

New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) A Delhi Police constable sustained serious injuries after a police team was attacked by a group of people, including a known bootlegger and his family members, during a raid in southeast Delhi's Gautampuri area, an official said on Tuesday. The incident took place on Monday evening after constable Lakhan of the Special Staff in the southeast district received a tip-off about a large consignment of illicit liquor being stored at the residence of Kailash (63), a habitual offender with multiple cases under the Excise Act, he said. 'Acting on the information, inspector Rajinder Singh Dagar, in-charge of the Special Staff, formed a team comprising sub-inspector Shubham and other personnel. The team, dressed in civil clothes, reached the location around 8 pm," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari said. During initial surveillance, constables Lakhan and Satbir observed Kailash and another man openly selling liquor on the staircase of the house, he added. When the police team attempted to intervene, Kailash allegedly incited the crowd by shouting that someone should be killed to protect the business. Hisar youth held with 1 kg heroin in Fatehabad
Hisar: In a major crackdown on inter-state drug trafficking, a joint team of the CIA Staff Ratia and AVT Staff of Fatehabad district arrested a youth from Hisar with 1.06 kg of heroin, valued at around Rs 5 crore in the international market. The accused has been identified as Gurmeet Singh alias Guggi, a resident of Peerawali village, Hisar district. Fatehabad superintendent of police (SP) Siddhant Jain said a police team, led by CIA Ratia in-charge sub-inspector Bedpal, was patrolling the Badopal area when they received a tip-off. The information indicated that Gurmeet Singh was transporting a large quantity of heroin on a motorcycle, en route from Punjab through Ratia and Badopal, with the intention of selling it in Peerawali. Acting swiftly on the input, the police set up a blockade at Dhangar Bridge and began inspecting vehicles. After some time, the accused was spotted approaching from the Ratia side. Upon seeing the police, he attempted to flee by taking a U-turn, but the police team immediately intercepted him using a govt vehicle and apprehended him. Further investigation revealed that ten criminal cases are already registered against Gurmeet Singh.
