Principal, teaching assistant suspended after allegations of child abuse at Sedge Garden pre-K program, WS/FCS says
KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — A pre-k program run by Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools must answer to the state after allegations of child mistreatment.
According to a statement released by the school district, 'The NC Division of Child Development and Early Education (DCDEE) has issued a special provisional license to WS/FCS for the Sedge Garden Pre-K Program for six months due to failure to meet childcare facility requirements.
'WS/FCS will ensure it meets all the requirements in the state's corrective action plan. The district has already taken steps to ensure an appropriate environment for Pre-K students, including addressing personnel issues and retraining staff. WS/FCS is also cooperating with law enforcement on this matter.'
The case is linked to a teaching assistant who has been accused of mistreating students. The teaching assistant was suspended without pay and removed from the classroom in late November 2024 when the allegations came to light.
'She was temporarily serving as a long-term substitute at Sedge Garden at the time of her suspension,' the school district said.
The principal of Sedge Garden Elementary, Angela Reeves, has also been suspended with pay while the school district investigates.
According to a letter dated March 14, 2025, during nap time, the staff member, who has not been criminally charged, 'forcefully restrained a child, grabbed and lifted a child by the arm, kicked a child, yelled and spoke harshly to children, covered and wrapped a child's head with a blanket and pushed the head down with her foot.'
NCDHHS said that Reeves was aware of this behavior, did not report it and 'did not take steps to ensure the safety of children.'

NCDHHS visited on Dec. 3 after being made aware of the allegations against the teaching assistant and visited again on Jan. 16, 2025, stating that 'all staff members for the licensed Pre-K program did not have signed acknowledgments of the facility's discipline policy on file, a violation of Child Care Rule 10A NCAC 09 .0514(g) regarding operational and personnel policies. In addition, staff members failed to complete incident reports on multiple occasions when children received injuries, a violation of Child Care Rule 10A NCAC 09 .0802(e) regarding emergency medical care.'
Ultimately, NCDHHS 'confirmed sufficient information to determine child maltreatment. Under North Carolina General Statute § 110-105.6, child maltreatment occurring in a child care facility is a violation of North Carolina licensure standards and licensure laws.'
The accused teaching assistant is now disqualified by the Division of Child Development and Early Education. She 'may not be employed by or seek to be employed by a child care facility, own or operate or seek to own or operate a child care facility, be a member of the household of a family child care home or center located in a residence, be present in a child care facility when children are in care or participate in a subsidized child care program.'
'We are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all children. We do not condone the use of physical force against our students. The behavior described in the complaint goes against our policies, standards, and values as a district, and is contrary to the very clear expectations we have for our staff,' said Superintendent Tricia McManus in a release provided by the school. 'We are grateful to those who reported the issues in this case.'
Additionally, the NCDHHS has paid several subsequent visits to the facility since these complaints.
On March 4, they visited the facility to follow up on a self-reported complaint after a child escaped from a pre-K classroom and was in an unfenced play area by themself for an undetermined amount of time.
According to paperwork, school administrators said there was a 'glitch' with their cameras, causing footage to jump in time for around an hour, so they were unable to see when the child escaped their classroom.
A teacher and assistant principal went out to get the child, who was playing basketball alone wearing only one shoe. The teacher stayed with the child while the assistant principal looked for the child's teachers in the pre-K classroom. The child's teachers reportedly had not realized that the child was missing.
A teacher and substitute both said that the child had previously tried to leave the classroom and that they had thwarted those previous attempts. They described this particular day as 'chaotic.'
'Ms. Reeves stated that, at the end of the day when the child was picked up, she and the preschool teacher met with the child's parent to discuss the incident that occurred that day. Ms. Reeves stated that the parent appeared fine and did not have any additional comments or concerns about the incident,' the document said.

AI Keanu Reeves Reportedly Scammed Woman Out of $160K
Word of advice: if Keanu Reeves hits you up online, be very, very suspicious. That's a lesson a Florida woman unfortunately learned the hard way. In an interview with Fox 13 in Tampa Bay, Dianne Ringstaff shared that the grift began when she was innocently playing Words With Friends. Out of nowhere, she received a message from the John Wick star—or at least someone claiming to be him. Ringstaff was understandably skeptical. Her initial reaction to the unsolicited message was that 'It can't be' Reeves, she told Fox 13. 'Until he videoed me,' she explained. 'And I was like, oh my God, that's him!'"I couldn't believe it,' Ringstaff continued. 'It was him, but it was far away. But I thought it was him." While she still felt the whole scenario was a bit implausible, that video call and a series of phone calls over a two-and-a-half year period eventually convinced Ringstaff that she was indeed talking to The Matrix star himself. The two became phone friends and would chat here and there. This was the case for a long time before things took a scammy turn. But when they did, the Not Reeves' requests for cash became persistent. The person posing as Reeves claimed that he was being sued by a former manager and that he was facing a potential legal headache after the FBI allegedly planted drugs in his home. Bottom line, claimed the grifter, his assets had been frozen and he was in desperate need of Bitcoin and says she did press a bit further: 'I said, but why don't you have a bank account?' Whatever the answer, it was enough to convince her to help. 'I was vulnerable,' she said. 'I just lost my boyfriend. And then later that summer in 2022, my dog died.' So she decided to help—which entailed taking out a home equity loan and selling her car. All in all, she estimates that the perpetrator, who is believed to be using AI to pose as Reeves, collected approximately $160,000 from her. Just a month ago, local sheriffs came knocking at Ringstaff's door to let her know that she wasn't the only person being scammed—and that some of the other victims' money was actually being funneled through her bank accounts. 'I just broke down and cried,' admitted Ringstaff. Until she decided to take back control. 'I'm by myself,' she said. 'I didn't have anybody to talk to, to give me guidance. So then I got mad, and I started getting my things together, and now I'm on track to get back on track.' Ringstaff is also bravely speaking out and telling her story in order to prevent others from falling into the same trap. According to Fox 13, these so-called 'romance' scams are one of the most common types of fraud being perpetrated right now. And the easy availability of AI makes it possible for determined fraudsters to impersonate just about anyone, including one of the world's most popular action stars. 'Knowing what I know now and all the technology that's out there, [people] can fake voices and everything else,' Ringstaff warned. 'It will never happen again. But I just want to let people know not to be naive and stupid and do your research and don't give anybody your personal information unless you already know them.' Two men acquitted by jury in Dodger stadium attack following Elton John concert
Two men accused of a brutal attack at the Dodgers stadium parking lot following a 2022 Elton John concert have been acquitted of battery and vandalism charges after a four-week jury trial. A jury on Thursday found Chad Reeves, 44, and Reese Hopkin, 40, not guilty of battery causing serious injury to Jaime and Lillian Grenfell, a married couple in their 60s. Hopkin was also found not guilty of vandalism related to a bystander's cell phone that was broken during the incident. The pair were charged in 2023 after a video of the Nov. 17, 2022 incident went viral. Jaime Grenfell suffered serious injuries and was knocked unconscious by Hopkin. Prosecutors also alleged Hopkin grabbed the phone of a man recording the incident and threw it to the ground. At trial, defense lawyers said the video showed only a portion of the incident. Reeves' attorney, Glen Jonas, argued the viral video was "edited," and claimed that Jaime Grenfell "attacked'' Reeves and a woman, but it was not shown in the video. They argued that Reeves came to the defense of Jessica Santi, after Grenfell initiated an altercation with her. In their narrative, the Grenfells' SUV mirror struck Reeves and it led to yelling, and then Jaime Grenfell got out of the SUV and came toward Santi and struck Reeves first, according to court records. As to Hopkin, the attorneys argued that he only became involved in the conflict when his wife, Lindsay Hopkin, was allegedly assaulted. Jonas said the evidence he and attorneys Raffi Manuelian and Dilan Patel presented showed Hopkin knocked out Jaime Grenfell with a punch to the face when the alleged victim tried to reengage in the conflict, Jonas said. "These two innocent men — Mr. Reeves and Mr. Hopkin — were falsely prosecuted by a District Attorney's Office that refused to look at the case objectively," Jonas said, blaming former Dist. Atty. George Gascón for the charges. Manuelian, who represented Hopkin, told City News Service after the verdict it was a vindication for a family man. "It's all about context," he said. "Let's not judge people based on what we see in the social media." The Grenfells have sued Reeves, Hopkin and the Dodgers over the incident, alleging there was inadequate security that night — something the Dodgers deny. In the lawsuit, Jaime Grenfell alleges that he and his wife "suffered a head injury in the attack and other contusions and wounds and she witnessed her husband's beating and his resulting injuries."
