Matthew Johnson, 49, was executed by lethal injection at the Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville and pronounced dead at 6:53 pm local time (2353 GMT). Johnson was sentenced to death for the 2012 murder of Nancy Harris, a 76-year-old grandmother. He admitted at trial to pouring lighter fluid on Harris and setting her alight during an early morning robbery of a store in Garland, Texas. Harris suffered severe burns and was taken off life support five days later. In his final statement, Johnson thanked God and asked for forgiveness from the victim's family, saying 'I never meant to hurt her.'
Advertisement He also apologized to his wife and asked for her forgiveness, along with the forgiveness of their three daughters. 'Just know that it's nothing that y'all did,' he said to his family. 'I made wrong choices, I've made wrong decisions, and now I pay the consequences.' Johnson's execution was scheduled to take place just hours after the midwestern state of Indiana carried out its second execution since 2009. Benjamin Ritchie, 45, was put to death by lethal injection overnight at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City for the 2000 murder of officer Bill Toney, the Indiana Department of Correction said in a statement. Toney, a father of two, was shot to death after pursuing a van that had been stolen by Ritchie and another man from a gas station in the town of Beech Grove. The other execution scheduled this week is in the southern state of Tennessee. Oscar Smith, 75, is to be put to death by lethal injection on Thursday for the 1989 shooting and stabbing murders of his estranged wife, Judy Smith, and her two sons, Chad and Jason Burnett. There have been 18 executions in the United States this year: 14 by lethal injection, two by firing squad and two using nitrogen gas. The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 US states, while three others -- California, Oregon and Pennsylvania -- have moratoriums in place. The statement confirmed that 48 people were involved in the crash, with thirteen victims pronounced dead at the scene, while two more died in the hospital. Four others sustained injuries. It is understood that the bus was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim, Perak. Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir said the ministry will provide all necessary assistance to those involved in the tragedy. Thai govt saddened by hostage's death in Gaza
The kingdom's Foreign Affairs Ministry said it was 'deeply saddened' by the death of a Thai hostage in Gaza whose body was retrieved by Israeli forces. Thai Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Nikorndej Balankura said Saturday in a video statement the ministry 'is deeply saddened to announce that today, the Royal Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv was informed by a representative of the Israeli government that Mr Nattapong Pinta, the last Thai hostage, has been confirmed dead.' An Israeli military statement, which gave his name as Natthapong Pinta, said on Saturday its forces retrieved his body from the Rafah area of southern Gaza. It said he was taken alive as a hostage during Hamas's Oct 7, 2023, attack. Nikorndej said Nattapong was one of three Thais held hostage in Gaza. The other two were confirmed dead in 2024 but Nikorndej said Israel has 'not yet been able to retrieve their corpses'. He said the Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv has contacted Nattapong's family to inform them and would work with the Israeli side to return his body to Thailand as soon as possible. — AFP

Manipur unrest sparks curfew
On high alert: Security personnel standing guard at a checkpoint after a curfew was imposed following recent violence in Imphal in the Indian state of Manipur. — AFP An Indian state riven by ethnic tensions imposed an Internet shutdown and curfew after protesters clashed with security forces over the arrest of some members of a radical group, police said. Manipur in India's northeast has been rocked by periodic clashes for more than two years between the predominantly Hindu Meitei majority and the mainly Christian Kuki community that have killed more than 250 people. The latest violence was triggered on Saturday after reports of the arrest of five members, including a commander, of Arambai Tenggol, a radical Meitei group. Incensed mobs demanding their release stormed a police post, set fire to a bus and blocked roads in parts of the state capital, Imphal. Manipur police yesterday announced a curfew in five districts, including Imphal West and Bishnupur, due to the 'developing law and order situation'. 'Prohibitory orders have been issued by District Magistrates. Citizens are requested to cooperate with the orders,' the police said in a statement. Arambai Tenggol, suspected of orchestrating the violence against the Kuki community, has also declared a 10-day shutdown in the valley districts. The state's home ministry has ordered all Internet and mobile data services in volatile districts to be shut off for five days in order to bring the latest unrest under control. Internet services were shut down for months in Manipur during the initial outbreak of violence in 2023, which displaced around 60,000 people from their homes, according to government figures. Thousands of the state's residents are still unable to return home owing to ongoing tensions. Long-standing tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities revolve around competition for land and public jobs.
