Canadiens' Lane Hutson gets short end of stick from USA Hockey

Lane Hutson is coming off an outstanding season with the Canadiens, posting 6-60-66 totals to win the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie. But it wasn't enough for the 21-year-old defenceman to be among the 44 players who received an invitation from USA Hockey on Tuesday to attend the men's Olympic orientation camp. Hutson's teammate, Cole Caufield, who posted 33-37-70 totals last season, did get an invitation to the camp. USA Hockey invited 16 blue-liners to the camp, but not Hutson. The defencemen who did receive invitations are Brock Faber (Minnesota Wild), Quinn Hughes ( Vancouver Canucks ), Luke Hughes and Brett Pesce (New Jersey Devils), Ryan McDonagh (Tampa Bay Lightning), Brady Skjei (Nashville Predators), Adam Fox (New York Rangers), Seth Jones (Florida Panthers), Jacob Slavin (Carolina Hurricanes), Noah Hanifan (Vegas Golden Knights), Jackson Lacombe (Anaheim Ducks), Neal Pionk (Winnipeg Jets), Alex Vlasic (Chicago Blackhawks), Charlie McAvoy (Boston Bruins), Jake Sanderson (Ottawa Senators) and Zach Werenski (Columbus Blue Jackets). McDonagh, 36, is the oldest defenceman invited to the camp, while Luke Hughes, 21, is the youngest. The Canadiens selected McDonagh in the first round (12th overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft , but traded him to the New York Rangers as part of the Scott Gomez deal two years later before he had played a game in the NHL. McDonagh has 1,010 NHL regular-season games under his belt with the Rangers, Nashville Predators and Lightning and won two Stanley Cups with Tampa Bay. The Olympic orientation camp will be held Aug. 26-27 in Plymouth, Mich. It will be largely an administrative and team-building event with no formal on-ice activities. Twelve players invited to the camp helped the United States win gold at the 2025 IIHF World Championship — the first gold for the U.S. at the event in 92 years. Introducing the 44 players who will attend the U.S. Men's Olympic Orientation Camp 🇺🇸 Details: This month, Hockey Canada announced the names of 42 players invited to its Olympic orientation camp , slated for Aug. 26-28 in Calgary. Canadiens goalie Samuel Montembeault was among the players invited, along with Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki and defenceman Noah Dobson. The men's hockey tournament at the Olympic Games in Milano Cortina will begin on Feb. 11. It will mark the first time NHL players compete at the Olympics since 2014 in Sochi. The gold-medal game is slated for Feb. 22. Hutson is heading into the final season of his NHL entry-level contract with a US$925,000 salary-cap hit. When asked at the end of last season about the possibility of signing a new contract extension this summer, Hutson said: 'I honestly haven't looked too much into that. It would be pretty special. I want to be here. You never know what could happen.' Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes said after the season that there was no urgency when it comes to signing Hutson to an extension. Not being named to the U.S. Olympic orientation camp won't help Hutson's agent in contract negotiations. 'For sure, we'll talk to his agent,' Hughes said after the season. 'I saw that he mentioned he'd like to get his contract settled sooner rather than later. So we'll call his agent and we'll see. But it's not like it's a priority. I find it's important to communicate, to learn what's important to Lane, and from there we'll see if there's a way to agree on a contract.' Hutson's agent is Sean Coffey, who is part of Quartexx Management, which used to be Hughes's company when he was a player agent. 'With Cole, we waited to the end of his (entry-level) contract,' Hughes added. 'With Slaf (Juraj Slafkovsky) and (Kaiden) Guhle, it happened with a year left. So I think we'll start talking and see where it goes.' Caufield signed an eight-year, US$62-million contract with an annual cap hit of US$7.85 million, Slafkovsky signed an eight-year, US$60.8-million contract with a cap hit of US$7.6 million and Guhle signed a six-year, US$33-million contract with a cap hit of US$5.55 million. Dobson, acquired from the New York Islanders in June, will be the highest-paid defenceman on the Canadiens next season after signing an eight-year, US$76-million contract with a cap hit of US$9.5 million.
