Your letters: Summer is short — open our splash parks

Saturday was a perfect summer day in a city that doesn't have many such days. Disappointingly, the children's splash pool at Century Gardens was dry, as were all of the park's water features. I have not seen the pool operational at all so far this summer. Article content Several blocks east down Stephen Avenue, there is no longer a pool at Olympic Plaza for the kids to play in, because — as is so typical of this city — it is being rebuilt (rather than renovated) after decades of neglect. A few blocks south, in Central Memorial Park, the kids' water feature is not operational, and only one of the park's two fountains is working. No children, no parents, no community vitality. Since 2001, they have consistently found NHL talent — from stars such as Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk, to late-round gems such as Andrew Mangiapane and Dustin Wolf. Article content The draft is always a gamble, but Calgary's scouts have found value more often than not. The real issue has been shaky management and a revolving door of head coaches. Poor asset handling and short-term thinking during the Brad Treliving era did more to stall progress than any 'analytics' in scouting.

Horse euthanized after injury during Stampede chuckwagon race

Officials from the Calgary Stampede said a horse that was hurt during a chuckwagon race on Saturday was put down. A Stampede spokesperson said a horse on Chad Fike's team sustained a racing injury during the eighth heat. An entry on the World Professional Chuckwagon Association website says Fike, who lives in Cremona, Alta., is a fourth-generation chuckwagon competitor. The horse is the first reported animal death at the 2025 Calgary Stampede, which wraps Monday. Three horses and a steer were euthanized at last year's Stampede, and animal rights groups have long called for the rodeo portion of the event to be eliminated because of the deaths.
