Six of the nine cowboys rode to scores of 86.5 or better, with Thompson first putting up an 88 Cinchy Whitney, Timberman then scoring an 88.5 on Bucking Knight and Cooke rounding out the initial rides with a 90 aboard True Grit.

RC Landingham, the defending Stampede champ, finished just shy of the final after the California bareback artist rode 86.5 on Fresh Chick.

And Montana's Sam Petersen was left in the cryin' hole after a sensational but heartbreaking 87.5 effort aboard Pretty Woman.

And it wasn't until late in the round when Pozzi Tonozzi laid down the fastest time — only a hundredth-of-a-second quicker than Mowry and Ellis — with a sizzling 16.97 trip.

Oklahoma's Leslie Smalygo, the defending champ, was fifth fastest in 17.06 and didn't advance.

His 6.6 trip was the best time in tie-down roping of the entire Stampede and bettered the field by a bunch. Next quickest were the 7-flats put up by Crouse and Mayfield to push them along with Douch into the short go.

Horse euthanized after injury during Stampede chuckwagon race
Officials from the Calgary Stampede said a horse that was hurt during a chuckwagon race on Saturday was put down. A Stampede spokesperson said a horse on Chad Fike's team sustained a racing injury during the eighth heat. An entry on the World Professional Chuckwagon Association website says Fike, who lives in Cremona, Alta., is a fourth-generation chuckwagon competitor. The horse is the first reported animal death at the 2025 Calgary Stampede, which wraps Monday. Three horses and a steer were euthanized at last year's Stampede, and animal rights groups have long called for the rodeo portion of the event to be eliminated because of the deaths.
