Maharashtra govt seeks 3 weeks to formulate policy on immersion of Plaster of Paris idols

The court then directed the state government to take a policy decision regarding the immersion of such idols based on the recommendations from an expert committee of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Earlier this month, the high court permitted the manufacture and sale of PoP idols but said they cannot be immersed in natural water bodies without its permission.
Mumbai, Jun 30 (PTI) The Maharashtra government on Monday said it would formulate its policy on immersion of idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) in three weeks, even as the Bombay High Court urged it not to delay the process further considering the upcoming festivals.
Advocate General Birendra Saraf on Monday informed the bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne that the government has held meetings and will require three more weeks to formulate a policy.
To this, the bench said while it does not mind giving time, the government must keep in mind the upcoming festivals.
'Festivals are coming up from August. We (the court) also need time to look into the policy. Hence, let the policy decision be placed before the court on or before July 23,' the court said.
The court had permitted manufacture and sale of PoP idols pursuant to a clarification from the CPCB that its revised guidelines pertained only to the immersion of such idols.
The court was hearing a bunch of petitions by associations of Ganesh idol makers, challenging the CPCB guidelines banning the use of idols made of PoP and their immersion, alleging violation of their fundamental rights. PTI SP ARU

JNU teachers' body questions admission delays, PhD process; demands accountability

In a statement, the JNUTA flagged irregularities in admission timelines, especially for PhD aspirants, and criticised the use of NET percentile scores in a way that it claimed distorts the final merit list. There was no immediate response from the JNU administration over the allegations. New Delhi, Jun 30 (PTI) The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association (JNUTA) expressed concern on Monday over what it termed a 'messy and illogical' academic schedule for the upcoming semester, alleging widespread administrative lapses under the current university leadership. 'Combining percentile scores from the NET exam with raw viva-voce marks defies basic statistical logic,' it said, adding that the practice renders the written exam marks effectively meaningless. According to the current schedule, while continuing students start attending classes from July 9, first-year undergraduate and postgraduate students will only complete their admissions by July 29, with a possible final round in mid-August. PhD admissions, meanwhile, are spread across September, with uncertainty over semester alignment and course durations. The statement also highlighted the exclusion of the June 2025 NET candidates from the PhD process, despite many having just completed their master's degree. Further, the JNUTA accused the administration of bypassing faculty opinions on reverting to the university's own entrance exams and misusing the APAR (Annual Performance Assessment Report) mechanism to over-regulate the academic staff. 'The VC's avoidance of a scheduled meeting with the JNUTA, despite an earlier commitment, shows the administration's indifference,' the teachers' body said, noting unresolved promotion cases and arbitrary appointment processes during the summer break. A mass-faculty delegation is now scheduled to approach the vice chancellor's office on July 4 to register its protest and demand immediate redressal. The JNUTA reaffirmed its commitment to 'saving the university from complete destruction' amid what it described as a steadily-deteriorating academic climate. Peace accord entirely represents Mizoram: Zoramthanga

However, there were no official functions to mark the peace accord day. The 39th anniversary of the Mizo peace accord was celebrated by the MNF across the state on Monday. Aizawl, Jun 30 (PTI) Mizo National Front (MNF) president Zoramthanga on Monday asserted that the Mizo peace accord signed between the Centre and erstwhile underground MNF in 1986 was not only an accord between the MNF and the Union government but it represents the entire Mizo people. 'Some vested interests say and devalue the Mizo peace accord as only the accord between the Centre and the MNF. It was signed by Laldenga on behalf of the MNF and Lalkhama (former state chief secretary) on behalf of the Mizo people, who did not go underground,' Zoramthanga said while addressing the celebration of peace accord day in Saitual. The former rebel leader turned politician said that the Mizo peace accord was signed when both parties were in good and strong positions. 'Had the accord been signed when we were organisationally weak, we would have been too submissive. The accord, however, was signed when we were economically and organisationally strong,' he said. Zoramthanga said that Mizoram was elevated to full-fledged statehood from being a Union Territory with a special provision under Article 371 G after the signing of the historic Mizo accord. He said that article 371 G provides special provision to Mizoram as no act of Parliament in respect of religious or social practices of the Mizos, Mizo customary law and procedure, administration of civil and criminal justice involving decisions according to Mizo customary law, ownership and transfer of land, can be applied to Mizoram unless the state legislative assembly decide by resolution. The Youth wing of the MNF erected a hoarding of Article 371G at a roadside in front of Mizo Hnam Run or the MNF office here. The hoarding was unveiled by Lalkhama, the former chief secretary who signed the historic accord in 1986. Lalkhama said that the sacrifices and sufferings of the MNF cadres and martyrs deserve public respect and they are the real heroes because of whom the peace accord and its outcomes could become a reality. He said that the protection given to the people of Mizoram under Art 371 G needs to be made known to more people. MNF legislator Robert Romawia Royte said that the peace accord mandated the Parliament to enact the 53rd Constitutional Amendment Act 1986 which in turn incorporated the provisions and safeguards for the Mizos under Art 371G. The Mizoram peace accord was signed between the Centre and the erstwhile underground MNF on June 30, 1986, ending two decades of insurgency, after which Mizoram became the 23rd Indian state on February 20, 1987. Odisha chief secy for modern statistical system to measure state's socio-economic progress

He stressed the need for institutional capacity building, too. Addressing the 19th National Statistics Day here, Ahuja said the system would also help in identifying the areas of shortfall and the way forward. Bhubaneswar, Jun 30 (PTI) Odisha Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja on Monday batted for a modern statistical system to measure the socio-economic progress of the state. Speaking on the occasion, Development Commissioner Anu Garg advised the officials concerned to develop the recommended statistical system, which would help in effective monitoring of the goals and targets set in the 'vision document' for a 'Viksit Odisha – 2036 and 2047'. Citing the example of the 'Subhadra' scheme, she said the state government has been emphasising the use of data and, in the process, it has prepared a robust database that may be used in implementation of other beneficiary-oriented programmes. Ashish Kumar, former director-general, Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, highlighted the role of the National Statistical Office (NSO) in conducting sample surveys to provide data at regular intervals for the unorganised sectors of the economy.
