Pundits warned this was 90-overs-a-day red-ball cricket, a challenge for players after two months of IPL. Batters had to make mental adjustments when wearing whites instead of coloured clothing – dial in patience and delete intent. Also, technical adjustment was needed to handle English conditions. Players were required to respect the ball, pitch, cricket itself. The question that was repeatedly asked was can players reset their game? These pre-England concerns were valid as this was a team that was missing everyone, a family suddenly without its trusted elders. No Rohit-Kohli. No Ashwin-Shami. Which meant inexperienced openers, untested new ball bowlers, fresh Nos.3 and 4. Adding to overall uncertainty, another question mark: Shubman Gill, the new Test captain. Post England, the team is settled, sorted and stable. Young players have aced the test of Test cricket, India have found a confident captain and a team that can soak in pressure and find a way out of tough situations. More than on-field gains, it's significant that the needle has shifted for Indian cricket in many ways. It's like rebranding a product, giving it a new look and an attractive identity that is more appealing to fans, the principal stakeholders. After the exodus of seniors, Indian cricket has discovered new heroes, a new set of superstars. Virat and Rohit replaced, pushed into history, the current affairs baton handed to Gill, Rahul, Rishabh, Jaiswal and Sundar. Clearly, the team has moved on and nobody, at no time, felt the absence of yesterday's top guns. In the hypothetical Indian cricket's corporate world, if players were put through a performance appraisal, Gill and his boys would merit a BE (Beyond Expectation) rating and rewarded with a fat bonus. Besides change of personnel, with a new leadership group coming in, the team now has a new culture, a different operating system, and the dressing room appears free and liberated. Young players are not burdened by excessive respect for seniority, not intimidated or inhibited by the presence of various heavyweight 'bhaiyas'. Bumrah, Jadeja and Rahul are members of the senior citizen club but the youngsters, like smart students, know they can solve their problems on their own, without running around asking for help. This is the team of Gill, who himself is too young to be called Shubman bhaiya. After England, the greatest change is that the rebranded India team has gained respect. Winning abroad and making runs overseas separates the good from the ordinary and India have earned that respect, gained a certain aura. Each time they walk out to play in the future, opponents will know they have a battle on their hands. One noticeable aspect of the team in England was its composure. Before the Lord's game, Rishabh Pant fronted a press conference and explained India's position on frequent ball changes in clear terms. After Lord's, Gill was supremely polite but firm on the Crawley-Duckett matter. Made his point in a measured way, with calm dignity, without a trace of anger. KL Rahul is an absolute star as Indian cricket's articulate, suave senior statesman. The Indian team's reputation upgrade is great but real change depends on consistent success. Teams have to win regularly and players have to perform at their peak level and continue to create magic. It's too much to ask Gill to score four hundreds from five games, or expect Siraj to repeat what he did at the Oval. Still, the bar has been raised and new standards set. But that's in the distance. Cricket is a large entertainment platform with a rich variety of products to keep one engaged. New programmes are 'dropped' to hold our attention and cricket lovers are blessed they can catch the best live action just by flicking channels. No Test cricket for now, but Duleep Trophy is around the corner.

Out, in, out again: Sunil Chhetri excluded from 35-member probables list of Indian football team
There's a Sunil in the Indian team for the CAFA Nations Cup but it isn't Chhetri. Naming his first squad since being chosen as the chief coach of the Indian football team, Khalid Jamil has taken a punt on a few new faces. Among them is Sunil Benchamin, a defender with the Army who seems to have caught his attention during the ongoing Durand Cup. A glaring miss, however, is Sunil Chhetri — the Indian talisman who retired in 2024, returned this year and now isn't there in the probable list of 35 players for the Central Asian tournament that will be held in Hisor, Tajikistan, August 29 onwards. There is no explanation yet on why Chhetri hasn't been included in the squad — neither from the player nor the federation, who said that 'selection questions should be asked to the head coach'. Jamil wasn't available for comments. Bengaluru FC — the club Chhetri plays for — recently suspended the salaries of its first-team and staff due to the uncertainty surrounding the Indian Super League (ISL). The ISL's future is up in the air following a deadlock over the extension of the agreement between Football Sports Development Limited (the body that runs the league) and the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and a case pending in the Supreme Court. There are other players from Bengaluru in Jamil's squad, including goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, defenders Chinglensana Singh, Rahul Bheke, Roshan Singh Naorem, and midfielder Suresh Singh. Chhetri's absence from the team raises questions over his future after he was forced to step out of retirement by former coach Manolo Marquez. The 41-year-old took international retirement after playing against Kuwait in June last year. However, after India struggled for goals and to win a match under Marquez's turbulent tenure, Chhetri returned for national duty in the game against the Maldives in March. Marquez reasoned that Chhetri could help the team in the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers. He had some impact, too — in the four matches, he scored a goal in the team's 3-0 win over the Maldives. India are in a difficult position to qualify for the continental championships in 2027, having drawn 0-0 against Bangladesh and losing to Hong Kong 0-1. In between, India lost 0-2 to Thailand in an international friendly match. Marquez quit after the string of poor performances by the team. Jamil became the first Indian coach to be given charge of the national team in more than a decade. He was appointed after the technical committee of the AIFF decided to reward him for his ability to grind out results with a string of domestic teams across different divisions. India have been invited to play the CAFA tournament, where they will take on Tajikistan on August 29, Iran on September 1 and Afghanistan on September 4. The third-place match and the final will be played on September 8. The national team will resume its qualifying campaign in October. Jamil's 35-member squad for the CAFA tournament has a mix of players from across the ISL and a few from the Durand Cup. The AIFF said 22 players have reported to the camp that will begin training in Bengaluru from Saturday. The remaining 13 are expected to join the camp after completing their Durand Cup engagements with their respective clubs. Out of the remaining 13, seven are from Mohun Bagan — Anirudh Thapa, Deepak Tangri, Lalengmawia Ralte, Liston Colaco, Manvir Singh, Sahal Abdul Samad, Vishal Kaith; three from East Bengal — Anwar Ali, Jeakson Singh, Naorem Mahesh Singh; and one, Jithin MS, from NorthEast United. The AIFF said in a statement on Friday: 'The AIFF urges all clubs to release National Team players for this crucial assignment, which also prepares the squad for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers against Singapore (away and home).'

Star Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar recently opened up on the team bond he made and shared with the rest of the Indian players during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 against England, where the Shubman Gill side fought emphatically to draw the five-match Test series 2-2. India, after losing the first Test at Headingley, made a quick comeback and won the Edgbaston Test. India were then condemned to a gut-wrenching 22-run loss at Lord's before a spirited side drew the Manchester Test and won the last and final Test at The Oval. 'Truly, just the way the whole dressing room and the atmosphere was created, it was fabulous, it's an amazing atmosphere and a space to be a part of because we are all quite young and that's extremely exciting,' said Sundar to Wisden. 'Coming into the series, we knew for a fact that all of us would have to put our hands up and step up in different situations. And end of the series, when we look back, that's exactly what we have done,' he added. There were moments of brilliance from a young Indian side when one of the youngsters had stepped up for the team and won them the mini battles, which resulted in India drawing a hard-fought series. Sundar praised the spirit of the Indian side. 'There were so many individuals throughout the series who stepped up and won the situations and eventually won games for the team, and this is exactly the kind of team that we have always wanted to be in and we were in this series, and we have created some amazing bonds on and off the field,' he said. Speaking on winning the Oval Test on last day, Sundar said: 'It was fabulous, just the way the game turned out to be after every session Especially on day five, that 40 minutes was super intense, because when you know the target has come down to a single digit you never know anything could happen, and literally one delivery could change the entire course of the game and take the game from the opposition.'
