A bipartisan group of three U.S. senators including Senate Majority Leader John Thune urged President Donald Trump's administration on Monday to support international efforts to raise the mandatory pilot retirement age In 2023, Congress rejected a push to raise the mandatory airline pilot retirement age to 67 from 65. International rules prevent airline pilots older than 65 from flying in most countries outside the U.S.The Air Line Pilots Association has opposed raising the retirement age and said such a move could cause airline scheduling and pilot training issues and also require reopening pilot contract talks. The group of senators is led by Marsha Blackburn and includes her fellow Republican Thune and Democrat Mark Kelly "Raising or eliminating the pilot retirement age -- coupled with the existing rigorous technical and medical testing that pilots undergo -- would result in a reduction of accidents by closing the experience gap and retaining the greatest level of experience our passengers expect on the flight deck," said the letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio reviewed by Reuters. They urged Rubio to advocate at the International Civil Aviation Organization, an agency of the United Nations , for hiking the retirement age."If the United States cedes our leadership role in this space on the international stage, China -- who is presently andactively joining our partners to advocate for raising the pilot retirement age -- will gladly fill that void," the senators wrote. The State Department did not immediately comment. The U.S. mission to ICAO in Montreal has been without an ambassador since Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the commercial airline pilot who safely landed an Airbus A320 on New York's Hudson River in 2009, stepped down in July 2022. Former President Joe Biden nominated former Florida Governor Charlie Christ to the post in 2023, but he was not confirmed.

Big win for Trump! US top court gives go ahead to layoffs in Education dept; 1,400 to be jobless

The US Supreme Court on Monday, July 14 cleared the way for President Donald Trump's administration to resume dismantling the Department of Education, part of his bid to shrink the federal government's role in education in favor of more control by the states. In the latest high court win for Trump, the justices lifted a federal judge's order that had reinstated nearly 1,400 workers affected by mass layoffs at the department and blocked the administration from transferring key functions to other federal agencies. A legal challenge is continuing to play out in lower courts. The court's action came in a brief, unsigned order. Its three liberal justices dissented. A group of 21 Democratic attorneys general, school districts and unions behind a pair of legal challenges had warned in court papers that Trump's shutdown efforts threatened to impair the department's ability to perform its core duties. Row erupts after 9 workers from West Bengal detained in Chhattisgarh for ‘not producing documents'

A political row has erupted over the detention of nine migrant workers from West Bengal in Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district for allegedly staying there for several days without submitting documents to local authorities, The Indian Express reported on Tuesday. Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra described the detention as a case of 'state-sponsored kidnapping' by the Chhattisgarh government and the police. The Kondagaon Police told The Hindu that the nine men were detained on Saturday and released on Monday. Superintendent of Police Akshay Kumar said that the workers were residing in the district for the past three months but had not informed their local police station despite repeated announcements. 'Day before yesterday, we found them during patrolling,' The Hindu quoted Kumar as having said on Monday. 'When we asked for their names and IDs they did not produce and started misbehaving with us.' Kumar added that the police prepared a memorandum and produced the men before the sub-divisional magistrate. Following this, the men were detained under a section of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita that allows a magistrate to order persons suspected of concealing their presence to commit a cognisable offense to execute a bond for good behaviour. The superintendent of police added that all nine men had been released and that it was up to them if they wanted to stay in Kondagaon or return to West Bengal, The Hindu reported. A habeas corpus petition was filed in the matter before the Chhattisgarh High Court on Monday, The Indian Express reported. On Monday, Moitra said that the Chhattisgarh Police had detained the men, all residents of her Krishnanagar constituency in West Bengal, despite them having gone to the state through a labour contractor and with documentation and verification. The men were working as masons at a private school on a construction site in Kondagaon's Albedapada, the MP added. 'On July 12, police came to the site where they were staying and picked them up,' Moitra alleged. 'All of them had valid documents. Their mobiles phones have been switched off. We have got information from their family members that they have been put in Jagdalpur jail in the neighbouring [Bastar] district.' Moitra added that neither the Bengal government nor their families were informed about the detention. 'We have not got a copy of the detention order or a hearing; they had no access to a lawyer or a phone call,' she said. 'They say they have been released, but there is no mobile phone contact.' Claiming that the Kondagaon superintendent of police had told her that he did not want the workers in the district, the Trinamool Congress MP asked why Indian citizens who were working legally needed to leave the state. The allegations came nearly a month after four men from West Bengal, who had been picked up by the Maharashtra Police and 'pushed' into Bangladesh, were brought back on June 15. The Murshidabad Police in West Bengal had presented proof of them being Indian citizens. Over the past month, Indian authorities have been pursuing a policy to 'push' individuals claimed to be undocumented migrants into Bangladesh. Many of those 'pushed' into the country claim they are Indian citizens. India has 'pushed back' more than 2,000 persons into Bangladesh since the country launched ' Operation Sindoor ', a military operation against terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The legality of the 'push back' policy has been debated in India and internationally. Experts have told Scroll that the policy violated India's obligations under international law and customary international law.

She set herself on fire after allegedly facing prolonged sexual harassment by her college's Head of Department. Despite lodging a formal complaint and seeking help from the principal, her pleas were ignored, leading to the tragic incident. The incident occurred at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College. Live Events Meanwhile, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi , on Tuesday called the death an "organised murder by the BJP's system," accusing the BJP of failing to protect the victim. Gandhi alleged that the student was subjected to repeated threats, torments and humiliation instead of receiving justice. In a post on X, LoP Gandhi wrote, "The death of a daughter fighting for justice in Odisha is nothing less than a murder by the BJP's system. That brave student raised her voice against sexual harassment, but instead of delivering justice, she was threatened, tormented, and repeatedly humiliated. Those who were supposed to protect her kept breaking her." — RahulGandhi (@RahulGandhi) "As always, the BJP's system continued to shield the accused and forced an innocent daughter to set herself on fire. This is not suicide; it is an organised murder by the system. Modi ji, whether in Odisha or Manipur, the daughters of the nation are burning, breaking, and dying. And you? You remain silent. The country doesn't need your silence; it needs answers. India's daughters need safety and justice," the post read. Earlier in the day, the Congress workers staged a protest outside AIIMS Bhubaneswar following the death of the student. Police later detained the protesting workers.
