Fourth edition of rabies in Borneo conference coming up
Organised by Place Borneo Sdn Bhd and the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak, the event is supported by the Sarawak Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, the State Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government and Business Events Sarawak.
Place Borneo in a statement said the conference comes at a crucial time, as Sarawak continues to battle rabies outbreaks with three new cases reported in Kuching, Samarahan and Bintulu between May 1 and 9 this year.
'According to the Sarawak Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, since the outbreak began in 2017, authorities have vaccinated 267,883 animals and conducted 4,858 tests, with 23 percent returning positive—a stark reminder of the virus's ongoing presence,' the statement said.
Despite prevention efforts, it said the disease continues to impact both animals and people and the RIB 2025 theme, 'Rabies-Free Borneo: Uniting People, Animals, and Communities,' signified the urgent need for collective action.
Sarawak Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said rabies is not just a veterinary issue, but a public health and community issue and the state government remains fully committed to eliminate it once and for all.
'This conference is a crucial step in reaffirming our shared vision: a Rabies-Free Borneo. Together, we can and must end this outbreak,' he added.

Professor Fukuma's presentation included the following: From June 2006 through December 2023, 535 breast cancer patients with tumor lesions of less than 15 millimeters and 76 patients with tumor lesions of less than 10 millimeters were treated. The overall ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence rate (IBTR') was 0.98% for up to 17 years, resulting in a 99.02% recurrence free rate. For a subpopulation with more than 10 years follow up, including 51 patients with invasive ductal carcinoma and 20 patients with ductal carcinoma in situ, the IBTR was 2.8%, resulting in a 97.2% recurrence free rate. Milestone for Sarawak's livestock sector as 800 live pigs shipped to Selangor

Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom described the occasion as a significant step in the state's journey towards becoming a net food exporter by 2030. 'Today we are witnessing 800 heads of pig all the way to Selangor. This event is indeed very significant. In fact, it is a historic moment that we have to share not only with Sarawakians, but also with Malaysians and the world – that we are now able to export live pigs. 'And in the future, perhaps poultry and more. This has been a dream for us. Becoming a net food exporter by 2030 is a gigantic task, but nonetheless, we are making it happen. 'Once people see that it can be done, they get motivated. And once they believe it's possible, the rest is just history,' he told reporters at the official loading ceremony at Pending Port. The shipment is expected to arrive in Klang within 60 hours or approximately two and a half days. Dr Rundi said this first shipment to Peninsular Malaysia would not be the last. 'In the future, there will be bigger shipments and consignment containers that we send to Selangor. They can have the abattoir in Selangor and the meat can be distributed all throughout West Malaysia. And also the plan is to send directly to Penang and Johor,' he said. The pigs were supplied by Green Breeder Sdn Bhd, a Sarawak-based company led by Dr Ng Siew Thiam and his family, who currently export approximately 2,000 pigs weekly to Singapore. Dr Rundi commended the company's efforts and biosecurity standards, noting their success in maintaining exports even during the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak that impacted many other regions. 'Sarawak has been fortunate to remain an exporter of live pigs to Singapore, and now, other Asean countries may also be looking at us in the same light. 'Sarawak is free from foot and mouth disease (FMD) and that gives us a real advantage and leverage in attracting investors and encouraging more livestock farming activities here in the state,' he explained. Dr Rundi pointed out Sarawak first began exporting live pigs to Singapore in 2017, starting with a farm in Simunjan. He said the initial goal was to involve smallholder farmers, but biosecurity and technological requirements proved challenging. 'Not many could survive under such tight protocols, so we had to move from subsistence farming to high tech. Dr Ng told me they are going all the way with high-tech systems and biosecurity. That's why they can survive,' he said. To support the livestock sector's growth, Dr Rundi said the state will establish a new School of Veterinary Medicine in Semenggok through a collaboration with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Sarawak, formerly known as UPM Bintulu Campus. 'At the moment, we are lacking veterinarians. We need many more to manage and support the livestock industry. 'When we visited Brazil, they had 4,000 vets looking after their cattle. Here, we have only 15 government vets handling everything, while the rest are private. So, it has to be comprehensive – we must plan everything properly so that we can realise the dream we have. 'With this initiative, we can plan more effectively for the future of the livestock and agricultural sectors in Sarawak. I see great potential for Sarawak to become an agricultural hub,' he added. On the issue of pork prices, Dr Rundi said the government is monitoring the situation, but market rates are ultimately driven by supply and demand. 'When you talk about business, it's supply and demand. What we need now is to increase the supply to help reduce the price. 'At the moment, the supply is limited, so prices go up. That's why everyone is craving for it and they have to pay for it. But if we can increase production and volume, we will have better control over supply and pricing,' he said. He explained that the government is taking steps to prevent prices from soaring too high. 'At the moment, the price is around RM32 per kg. In Sabah, it's RM45, and in West Malaysia, even more — over RM40 to RM45 in the Klang Valley. We are the cheapest now. We cannot complain — but still we complain,' he added. No more leniency, rabies enforcement to begin soon, Mayor warns dog owners

He said owners who fail to comply with the mandatory anti-rabies vaccination requirement for their pets would face a fine not exceeding RM2,500 under Section 40 of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999. 'The Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) will start taking action very soon. 'I cannot tell you when, but it will definitely be within this year,' he told a press conference held in conjunction with the proposed single-storey community centre project at Hui Sing Park here today. He stressed that there no longer be leniency, pointing out that in the past, he had personally appealed to the higher authorities to reduce the compound to RM50 as a warning, in consideration of the difficult economic situation faced by many pet owners. 'Last time, I wrote to the higher authorities and said time is bad, please give this as a warning. So, we penalised people RM50 out of RM2,000,' he said. However, Wee said that despite the reduced penalty and repeated public education efforts, many pet owners still failed to vaccinate their pets or keep them secured, putting others at risk. 'Now people still don't want to listen. So, it's no longer fair. 'Enough is enough. We have done our part, and we expect pet owners to do theirs,' he added. He pointed out that authorities have continued to do their part such as increasing the number of free vaccination drives from twice to five times a year. 'We pay for these weekend vaccination drives. Who pays for the overtime? We pay. And when I say 'we', it's the taxpayers. 'Why should the wider community pay the price for a small group of people who are irresponsible?' he remarked. While the mayor acknowledged that recent rabies control efforts have shown encouraging results, with zero dog bite cases reported in the past week, he said MBKS is continuing to monitor the situation weekly with DVS, and stricter enforcement is needed to prevent complacency. 'We hope pet owners will take this seriously before we start issuing compounds. If your dog is not vaccinated, you will be fined. 'The penalties can go beyond just a fine.
