Minister Abdurahiman seeks more time for Haj application
July 31 is the last date to submit online applications. Many potential applicants are still waiting for their passports. There are many others, too, who could not apply because of technical issues in the online software. 'All of them require some more time to apply,' said Mr. Abdurahiman in his letter.
The Minister said that fewer days were allowed for applicants this year. He said more persons could apply if the application deadline is extended by at least 20 days.
As many as 11,845 persons have applied for Haj 2026 so far through the State Haj Committee. Of them, 2,252 are above 65 years of age, while 1,519 are women without mehram. In the general category, there are 8,074 applicants.
E-office inaugurated
State Haj Committee executive officer and District Collector V.R. Vinod inaugurated the committee's e-office system on Friday (July 26). He launched the new system by sanctioning, through e-office, the amount for the annual maintenance of the elevators at the Haj House.
Haj Committee assistant secretary Jafar Kakkooth, IT section superintendent Madanan, P.K. Yasar Arafat and C. Mohammed Suhair attended the function.

'ECI is not a court': Chidambaram slams poll body over SIR; terms refusal to hear complaints 'death of democracy'
P Chidambaram (File photo) NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader and former Union minister P Chidambaram on Sunday lashed out at the Election Commission of India (ECI), asserting that it is 'not a court' and must not act like one while dealing with petitions or complaints. In a post on X, Chidambaram wrote, 'The ECI is not a court and cannot behave like a court in entertaining petitions or complaints. It is an administrative body tasked with ensuring free and fair elections.' Clarifying the scope of Rule 20(3)(b), he said it applies only when an Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) accepts or rejects a specific claim to be included in the electoral rolls -- not in cases of alleged large-scale manipulation of an entire assembly constituency's rolls. Citing a newspaper report, he alleged that complaints from Booth Level Agents in Bihar are being ignored. 'If true, this refusal to entertain complaints during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) will spell the death of democratic elections,' he warned, adding that the ECI's duty extends beyond mere procedure to safeguarding the rights of political parties and voters. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has reiterated its stand that Rahul Gandhi must either submit supporting documents for his recent "vote theft" allegations or apologise. The reminder follows a notice from the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and a follow-up from the Haryana CEO. In an August 10 letter, the Karnataka CEO said Rahul Gandhi had, during his August 7 press conference, cited ECI records to allege that a voter named Shakun Rani voted twice, based on data shown by a polling officer. However, the voter has denied the charge, and officials said the tick-marked document displayed by Rahul Gandhi was not issued by the polling officer, raising doubts about its authenticity. The Karnataka CEO has asked Rahul Gandhi to share the original documents forming the basis of his claim so a detailed investigation can be carried out.

‘Suresh Gopi missing, probe needed'; KSU leader lodges complaint
THRISSUR: KSU district president Gokul Guruvayur has lodged a 'man-missing' complaint with the Thrissur City police, seeking a probe into the 'disappearance' of Union Minister and Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi. The police have not registered a case in that regard. In the complaint, the KSU leader alleged that Suresh Gopi went missing after the arrest of two Malayali nuns in Chhattisgarh. He urged the police to 'probe the whereabouts of the MP and to find those behind his disappearance'. According to his social media handles, Suresh Gopi is currently in Manipur on official duty as the Union minister of state for tourism and petroleum and natural gas. Meanwhile, BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar brushed aside complaints that Suresh Gopi has been missing from his constituency. 'Everyone knows that when an MP becomes a Union minister, he will have additional responsibilities,' Chandrasekhar said. Further, the BJP leader said he would soon meet the Malankara Orthodox Church's Thrissur Diocese Metropolitan Mar Yuhanon Meletius. The bishop had indirectly targeted Suresh Gopi in a recent Facebook post, expressing concern that 'the one we chose and sent to Delhi is missing'.
