HRF condemns AP's 10-hour workday bill
Visakhapatnam: The Human Rights Forum (HRF) condemned the recent assent by the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet to the AP Factories Amendment Bill, 2025 that seeks to impose a 10-hour work day. This, the HRF representatives opine, is an irresponsible and deliberate assault on labour rights and dignity. 'We demand its immediate and unconditional withdrawal. This move, sought to be brought about through an amendment to The Factories Act, 1948, is no 'reform' but a grotesque regression. It is plainly exploitative and treats with contempt decades of labour struggles that have advocated for and attained a humane and sustainable work environment,' mentioned HRF AP state general secretary Y Rajesh and HRF AP and TG coordination committee member VS Krishna.
These rights have a long and glorious history, wrested through generations of hard-fought battles led by the working class and progressive movements. The state government now seeks to dismantle these rights so as to benefit corporate interests, they pointed out.
The eight-hour work day is the cornerstone of modern labour rights. The HRF recalled the historic legacy of BR Ambedkar who played a decisive role in institutionalising the eight-hour workday. This is now being sought to be rolled back. Extending the maximum daily working hours amounts to entrenching exploitation
and a roll-back of hard-won labour safeguards. It normalises overwork, erodes the right to rest and leisure and strips away dignity from labour. This measure constitutes a fundamental breach of the government's constitutional obligations, they emphasised. HRF calls upon all democratic forcesto oppose this devious move.

Bengaluru stampede: Karnataka High Court orders release of RCB's Nikhil Sosale and others
In a major set back to the police and the State government, the High Court of Karnataka on June 12 ordered the release of four representatives of Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL) and DNA Networks Pvt. Ltd., who were arrested on the wee hours of June 6 in connection with the June 4 stampede outside M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru during the celebration of RCB's victory in IPL-2025 tournment. Justice S.R. Krishna Kumar passed the order while allowing the petitions filed by Nikhil Sosale, Head (Marketing and Revenue), RCSPL; Sunil Mathew, Director, and Kiran Kumar, Event Manager of DNA; and Shamant N.P. Mavinakere, a freelancer service provider for DNA. RCSPL is the owner of RCB cricket team and DNA is the event management firm for RCSPL. The Court has ordered their release on bail by imposing conditions. Copy of the order is yet to be released. 'Arrested on CM's orders' It was argued on behalf of the petitioners that they were arrested based solely on 'the orders of the Chief Minister [Siddaramaiah] to arrest the officials of RCB and others' and without conducting any investigation and collecting any material to point out that the petitioners were responsible for the stampede, which resulted in the death of 11 persons. They had also contended that they were arrested by the police, who had no jurisdiction either to investigate the cases registered in connection with the stampede or to arrest them. Meanwhile, the State government had defended their arrest claiming that the police adhered to all the procedures laid down in law and by the apex court while arresting the accused persons in a criminal case. However, the Government, either in its written statement or arguments, did not say anything on the court's query whether Chief Minister had stated at a media conference that he had ordered the arrest of officials of the RCB and others. The government, in its written statement, had merely stated that the contention of the petitioners, that their arrest was made solely on the Chief Minister's order, was not relevant for deciding the legality of their arrest.

J-K police seize property of terrorist spreading cross-border terrorism
Ramban (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 12 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Police attached the property of a terrorist trying to spread cross-border terrorism in the Banihal area, SSP Kulbir Singh said. SSP Kulbir Singh appealed to the youth to control their social media activity and asked them not to access websites that spread anti-national and anti-social activities. 'A crackdown is ongoing in which a legal action is being taken against the terrorists trying to spread cross-border terrorism, and the property in their name is also being seized... The 9th such case occurred in Banihal, where a property was attached. This is against a militant sitting across the border trying to spread terrorism... The public also participates actively in this... I want to appeal to youth to control their social media activity... 'Do not assess websites that spread anti-national and anti-social activities; otherwise, we will take strict legal action,' Singh said on Wednesday. On Tuesday, a high-level security meeting chaired by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Udhampur, Amod Ashok Nagpure, IPS, was held to review preparations and strategise for the smooth conduct of the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, 2025, officials said. The meeting was attended by Additional SP Udhampur, SDPOs, DySPs, and SHOs from Udhampur, Majalta, Rehambal, and Chenani, along with other officers involved in the Yatra arrangements. The discussions centred on key aspects such as security arrangements, intelligence sharing, traffic management, medical aid, emergency response, and logistical support. Special focus was laid on anti-narcotics operations. SSP Nagpure directed all officers to remain vigilant and conduct proactive drives to dismantle narco networks operating in the region. He also instructed officers to maintain a high level of alertness and operational readiness throughout the Yatra. Regular review meetings, briefing sessions, and mock drills were stressed to ensure the flawless implementation of all plans and protocols, officials said. The Amarnath Yatra is an annual Hindu pilgrimage to the sacred Amarnath Cave Shrine, dedicated to Lord Shiva, located at an altitude of about 3,888 metres in the Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir (J-K). A week earlier, Jammu and Kashmir (J-K) Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat chaired a joint meeting with officers from the Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) at Police Control Room Kashmir to review the security arrangements for the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra-2025, Eid-Ul-Adha and other upcoming events. Oppn. parties criticise Delhi govt.'s ‘undemocratic' ordinance on fee hikes
A day after the Delhi Cabinet approved an ordinance to regulate fee hikes by private schools, the Opposition parties on Wednesday took on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over the 'undemocratic' nature of the proposed law. Education Minister Ashish Sood had announced the Cabinet decision a day earlier and said that the ordinance would be sent to President Droupadi Murmu for approval, after which it would be implemented retrospectively from April 1 this year. While the Minister did not share details of the ordinance, including the manner in which it proposes to regulate fee hikes, a draft Bill — the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Bill, 2025, — the government had cleared earlier this year, mandates the formation of three regulatory committees at the school, district, and State levels to monitor and approve fee hikes. The Bill, which is yet to be tabled in the Assembly, also stipulates fines for increasing fees without approval. AAP's Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed that as per the provisions of the draft Bill, the 'fees decided by them [fee regulation committees] will automatically be treated as approved. There will be no need to seek permission from any government body'. He demanded that the rules of the ordinance be made public. When reached for comment, the Delhi government did not respond. Mr. Bharadwaj alleged that the government has been working 'in the interest of private schools, rather than those of the parents'. He added, 'The Cabinet passed the ordinance without consulting anyone. No parent was called for suggestions, no parents' body was involved, and no attempt was made to explain it. The draft wasn't made public, wasn't uploaded online, and no citizen feedback was sought.' Devender Yadav, the Delhi Congress chief, alleged that the BJP Cabinet's decision to approve the ordinance without consulting stakeholders is 'undemocratic', and betrays the manner in which the government has 'neglected' the voice of lakhs of students and their parents, who have been protesting against the arbitrary fee hike by private schools for months.
