HRF condemns AP's 10-hour workday bill

Hans India11-06-2025
Visakhapatnam: The Human Rights Forum (HRF) condemned the recent assent by the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet to the AP Factories Amendment Bill, 2025 that seeks to impose a 10-hour work day. This, the HRF representatives opine, is an irresponsible and deliberate assault on labour rights and dignity. 'We demand its immediate and unconditional withdrawal. This move, sought to be brought about through an amendment to The Factories Act, 1948, is no 'reform' but a grotesque regression. It is plainly exploitative and treats with contempt decades of labour struggles that have advocated for and attained a humane and sustainable work environment,' mentioned HRF AP state general secretary Y Rajesh and HRF AP and TG coordination committee member VS Krishna.
These rights have a long and glorious history, wrested through generations of hard-fought battles led by the working class and progressive movements. The state government now seeks to dismantle these rights so as to benefit corporate interests, they pointed out.
The eight-hour work day is the cornerstone of modern labour rights. The HRF recalled the historic legacy of BR Ambedkar who played a decisive role in institutionalising the eight-hour workday. This is now being sought to be rolled back. Extending the maximum daily working hours amounts to entrenching exploitation
and a roll-back of hard-won labour safeguards. It normalises overwork, erodes the right to rest and leisure and strips away dignity from labour. This measure constitutes a fundamental breach of the government's constitutional obligations, they emphasised. HRF calls upon all democratic forcesto oppose this devious move.

Russian, Chinese navies carry out anti-submarine drills in Sea of Japan: Is it Putin's signal to Trump?

(Sergei Bobylyov/Reuters) The Russian and Chinese navies are holding joint artillery and anti-submarine exercises in the Sea of Japan, Russia's Pacific Fleet has said. The move comes just two days after Donald Trump announced he had ordered two US nuclear submarines to be deployed. The manoeuvres, part of the 'Maritime Interaction-2025' drills, involve a large Russian anti-submarine ship, two Chinese destroyers, diesel-electric submarines from both countries and a Chinese submarine rescue vessel, according to Interfax news agency. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The exercises, which began before Trump's announcement, are scheduled to conclude on Tuesday (August 5). What do the drills involve? Russian and Chinese sailors will carry out artillery firing, practise anti-submarine and air defence missions, and conduct joint search and rescue operations at sea, the Pacific Fleet said. The drills are the latest in a series of regular military exercises between the two countries, which signed a 'no-limits' strategic partnership shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Moscow and Beijing have increasingly coordinated their armed forces in recent years, seeking to send a deterrent message to western adversaries. The significance of the timing of drills US President Donald Trump on Friday (August 1) said he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in 'the appropriate regions' in response to remarks from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev about the risk of war between the nuclear-armed adversaries. Trump's comments on Friday about deploying US nuclear submarines came after former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev made 'highly provocative' remarks about the risk of war between the nuclear powers. Russia and the US possess the world's two largest nuclear arsenals, and it is extremely rare for either side to reveal details about submarine deployments. The timing of the joint drills is likely to be seen as symbolic, even though they were planned in advance. They come amid mounting tension between Washington and Moscow, as Trump grows increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress in ending the war in Ukraine.

Telangana liberates sports from political interference with its new policy

HYDERABAD: Asserting that his government was making sustained efforts to promote sports and sportspersons in the state, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy unveiled the Telangana Sports Policy - 2025 here on Saturday. The policy, he said, was aimed at reducing political interference by adopting a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. A sports board comprising former players and experts will oversee its execution. Addressing the gathering at the first edition of the Sports Conclave after unveiling the policy, he alleged that negligence by the previous BRS government had left stadiums in the state reduced to venues for marriages, private events and sunburn parties. Revanth recalled the city's sporting past: 'Hyderabad hosted National Games in 2002, Commonwealth Games in 2003 and World Military Games in 2007. The Gachibowli area was developed only because of the sports stadium there. Over the previous BRS government's decade-long tenure, all stadiums were neglected and converted into function halls. The Congress government is making all necessary efforts to change this situation.' Calling it an 'insult to the country' that India has not won an Olympic gold in recent times, Revanth said: 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning to host the 2036 Olympics in India.' World-class athletes needed: Revanth 'India has the money, the space and cities like Hyderabad to host the Games, but without even a single gold medal, how can we show our strength? That is why we need to create world-class sportspersons in the coming days,' Revanth added The chief minister said he had urged the Centre to allow Telangana to host the Khelo India Games 2026 and two disciplines of the Olympics in Hyderabad. He added that sports will have a dedicated section in the Telangana Rising 2047 vision document.
