Four Mothers review – remake of Mid-August lunch moves to Dublin and brings out queer subtext
Gianni Di Gregorio's modern Italian classic Mid-August Lunch from 2008, about a middle-aged bachelor caring for his ageing mum and other elderly ladies, has inspired this loose remake: a broad comedy amplifying what could be seen as the original's queer subtext. Despite one or two sweet touches and game performances, it never comes close to matching the gentleness, subtlety and charm of the original.
The action is transferred from Rome to Dublin and the gay theme perhaps effectively replaces the importance of food in the Italian film. James McArdle is Edward, a YA author and gay man on the verge of major literary stardom, for which an upcoming US publicity tour is vitally important. But he has to take care of his widowed mum Alma (Fionnula Flanagan) who cannot speak after suffering a stroke, and there is some droll comedy with the Stephen Hawking voice enunciating her crisp commands from her iPad.
And then Edward's three gay male friends (he appears to have no female friends, gay or straight), dump their elderly mums on him because they all want to head off for a dissolute Pride weekend abroad; they are Maude (Stella McCusker), Jean (Dearbhla Molloy) and Rosie (Paddy Glynn). And so Edward, decent guy that he is, does his best to look after these formidably opinionated and difficult four ladies while dealing with his own private heartbreak and issues with anxiety, as well as his unresolved anger about his late father. There are moments when it comes to life and there's a nice cameo for Niamh Cusack, but for me, the film is at once bland and cartoony.
Four Mothers is in UK and Irish cinemas from 4 April.

Giovanni Pernice's ex girlfriend eyed up to 'tell all' Love Island
Giovanni Pernice's ex girlfriend has been eyed up to become one of this years islanders, in the 'most dramatic series yet', after dating the former Strictly dancer last year Giovanni Pernice 's ex girlfriend, Molly Brown, has reportedly been eyed up for a summer of love in the Love Island villa to find a new romance. The 26 year old, who dated the Strictly star for several months last year, has reportedly been approached by ITV producers. Molly and Giovanni began dating at the beginning of 2024 but split after a few weeks before rekindling their relationship until July. The couple were together while allegations were being made by Amanda Abbington against Giovanni regarding his actions on Strictly. The allegations reportedly grew too much for the couple, and they went their separate ways. A source claimed that Molly could 'spill the beans' on her previous relationship. They teased: 'TV execs love a famous ex and the chance for Molly to spill the beans on the biggest scandal for their rival channel the BBC was very tempting.' The source added to The Sun: 'She could feature later in the series if show action allows, but ITV do speak to hundreds of singles every year to ensure there's a wide cast ready for every storyline.' Former Strictly star Giovanni is now in a relationship with actress Bianca Guaccero. The new couple first crossed paths during the Italian version of Strictly, and their relationship grew from there. They appear to be loved up in recent snaps shared to their social media from a romantic holiday in Barbados. The reports follow this year's summer series of Love Island being dubbed the most dramatic series yet. The 12th series of the reality show is set to premiere on June 9 on ITV2, promising to bring more drama and twists. Returning as host, Maya Jama has hinted at unprecedented twists and explosive moments that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats Mike Spencer-Hayter, also known as Love Island's boss, has already teased that week one will hold never-seen-before twists, as well as revealing that they have a whole two weeks planned out, which isn't a usual occurrence. He has also hinted that the huge twist could be related to this years bombshells. He sparked speculation that the bombshell could be international as he told The Sun: "Something big is coming in week one. We've got a really big week one planned. It's hard to say what we're doing without saying it. It's not a celebrity. We've not seen it before.' He added: 'There will be things happening for the first couple of days we've not done before and certainly in week one. During that week, there's something incredibly big we've never done before. Hopefully, we can do it. It's quite experimental.' The boss also admitted to breaking the rules of tradition by planning further ahead. He said: 'We've mapped out two weeks, which we don't usually do, to be honest. So we've got two weeks planned and one very, very big thing that's never been done ever on Love Island. Globally.'

Holmfirth Pride brings town together after homophobic attack
A town has held its first Pride event in response to a homophobic attack on a man as he was leaving a Pride 2025 took place on Saturday and Sunday after being organised by residents Hilary Bowyer and Isobel festival included activities such as a rainbow scavenger hunt, drag bingo, and an exhibition of queer art featuring local owner Ms Heely, said the event was organised after a man in his 20s was attacked by five men outside The Old Bridge on Norridge Bottom on 12 April. She said: "As a close-knit community, we were all horrified when we heard about the incident and did not want anybody to feel like we were not supportive."We did not want people to think that this is the sort of thing that happens here and we wanted to show it does not represent us as a community."All of the 65 businesses in the town have got bunting up and people are leaving their mark in the streets with chalk to show that there is acceptance and we are welcoming to all."Ms Heely added the positive response to the event had "had me in tears" as it had shown how the "community has really rallied together". She said: "It has been heartwarming to see such a positive response to something negative."We've had six weeks to pull the project together to make sure it was ready for Pride month and were lucky to get funding from the parish council and Kirklees Council."The response has been so great that we're planning to hold the event again next year."We just want to send a message that everybody belongs and we will not tolerate hate."The attack left the victim with facial injuries after being punched and kicked by the group, who had also made offensive slurs to the victim and his partner, and was investigated as a hate crime by West Yorkshire Police.
