UniSZA bans recreational activities in water-based areas after student tragically drowns
PETALING JAYA: Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Terengganu has issued a notice, banning any recreational activities in water-based areas for its students.
This comes after the incident involving its law faculty student, who was found drowned at Hutan Lipur Lata Payung picnic area yesterday.
In a Facebook post, the university's sports and recreation center (PSR) announced that its students are prohibited from arranging recreational outings to places such as rivers and waterfalls.
'This takes effect immediately until further notice from UniSZA.
'This step has been taken for the safety and well-being of the UniSZA students,' it said.
Yesterday, Abed Mifzal Azman, 22, a student from the campus, drowned after being swept away by strong currents while bathing in the river.
His remains was found at 9.30pm by a search and rescue team with the help of villagers, about one kilometre from where he was first reported missing.

KUALA TERENGGANU: A fever kept a Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student off the ill-fated chartered bus which was involved in an accident early this morning. The student had been hospitalised the day before and could not board the bus which left Terengganu the night before, his brother revealed. "My brother is one of the UPSI students who was supposed to be on the bus," said the student's sibling in a Facebook post. "But he was admitted to Jerteh Hospital in Besut yesterday afternoon due to a fever." Earlier, 14 UPSI students and a bus assistant were confirmed dead and seven others seriously injured when the bus they were travelling in overturned along Jalan Jeli-Gerik near Tasik Banding early this morning. The chartered bus was carrying 42 UPSI students who were travelling from Terengganu back to the university's campus in Tanjung Malim. Preliminary investigations indicate that the bus hit a Perodua Alza from behind before the driver lost control and the vehicle skidded off the road.

'We just sent her off': Mum heartbroken after UPSI bus crash
KOTA BARU: A mother was left devastated after learning that her eldest daughter was among the 15 people killed in a tragic bus crash involving Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students near Tasik Banding early this morning. "We had just sent her off last night to catch the bus. This morning, I received news that she had died in the crash," said Fieza, mother of 22-year-old Fatin Nasrin Fadli. The fatal collision, which occurred at 1am along the East–West Highway (Jeli–Gerik route), involved the students' bus and a Perodua Alza. Seven other students sustained serious injuries and are being treated at Gerik Hospital. Fieza said the family first became aware of the incident around 6am after seeing posts about the crash on Facebook. "I only knew there had been an accident involving her bus. I didn't know whether she was injured or had died. While I was driving from Jertih, the hospital called to inform me that she hadn't survived," she said. "It's heartbreaking. She had just returned home for Hari Raya. We were so happy sending her off last night, especially as she was due to attend classes today," she added. As of 10.50am, Fieza was still stuck in traffic in Tanah Merah, Kelantan, uncertain of when she would arrive at Gerik Hospital. "She was the eldest of five siblings and was full of cheer during her time at home. We're all in shock," she said. Authorities earlier confirmed that 14 UPSI students and the bus attendant were killed when the privately chartered university bus overturned near Tasik Banding. The group had been returning to campus after the Hari Raya Aidiladha holiday.

Wrong-way rage: Man drives against traffic after row with wife
JOHOR BARU: Police have identified and recorded a statement from a man caught on video driving against traffic along Jalan Skudai, Pantai Lido on June 7. Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the 34-year-old suspect, who tested negative for drugs and alcohol, admitted to the offence. He claimed he was emotionally distressed following a quarrel with his wife, which caused him to lose focus and mistakenly enter the wrong lane. The incident, which went viral on social media, involved a blue Perodua Aruz travelling against the flow of traffic at 1.41am. Raub said the video, shared by the Facebook group Community Roda Johor, was flagged by Bukit Aman, prompting local police to initiate an investigation. "Checks on the vehicle registration number led investigators to the driver, who later presented himself at the district police station at 11.30pm the same day," he said in a statement today. The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving. Raub urged witnesses to come forward to assist in the investigation by contacting Inspector Mohd Zulpaka Bambo at 014-8861791 or by visiting the Johor Baru South Traffic police station. He also reminded all road users to comply with traffic regulations, warning that firm action would be taken without compromise against reckless drivers.
