Emilio Aguinaldo College narrowly escaped a determined Arellano University with a 66-64 win on Wednesday to extend its winning streak and grab a share of top spot in the 18th Filoil Preseason Cup.
The Generals wasted a 12-point lead, but restored order in the endgame thanks to clutch baskets from holdovers Brianne Angeles and Nicole Quinal to surge to their fourth straight wins for a 6-1 card. More importantly, EAC forced a tie at the top with Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
Down one in the final minute, Angeles completed a layup off a dish from rookie EJ Castillo, making up for a missed three-pointer in the previous play to give EAC a slim 65-64 lead.
Quinal then split his free throws after forcing a foul from King Vinoya to seal it for the Generals.
Quinal top-scored EAC with 15 points while Jude Bagay and Ruzzelle Dominguez posted 11 and 10 markers each as the Generals continued to make its case as a title contender ahead of NCAA Season 101.
In other games, Mapua University and University of Perpetual Help System DALTA took care of their jobs against Jose Rizal University and San Sebastian College-Recoletos, respectively.
The defending champions Cardinals relied on an all-around outing from graduating Clint Escamis to pull off a 76-68 win against the rebuilding Heavy Bombers.
Escamis posted 13 points, seven assists, and three rebounds to help Mapua improve to 4-2 while Cyril Gonzales churned out a team-high 21 markers together with four rebounds, two dimes, and two steals.
Perpetual, on the other hand, halted a three-game slide by eking out a 75-61 win against the Stags behind near double-double showing from debuting transferee Patrick Sleat.
The former FEU star poured in 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two steals while sophomore Mark Gojo Cruz supplied the help with 12 markers, six boards, and two dimes as they hiked their card to 2-4.

EJ Castillo, Jude Bagay shine as EAC Generals rule Indonesia tournament

EJ Castillo and Jude Bagay delivered standout performances on the international stage, powering Emilio Aguinaldo College to the U25 Cheng Hoo Cup 2025 title last week in Cirebon, Indonesia. The Generals captured the title by going undefeated in five games while fellow Philippine representative Polytechnic University of the Philippines seized the silver with a 4-1 win-loss record. Incoming rookie Castillo, a homegrown product of EAC high school, proved his scoring ability against foreign clubs, amassing 86 points — the most in the U25 division — while Bagay was named Most Valuable Player after collecting 72 points. Other Generals also made their mark, with veteran guard Kyle Ochavo dishing out a tournament-high 28 assists and ranking fourth in steals with 14. Brianne Angeles (74 points) and Joshua Tolentino (50 points) also impressed, both finishing among the top 10 scorers. EAC's feat came just days after making the quarterfinals of the 2025 FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup, where the Generals racked up six wins against three losses to join Letran, Benilde, and Arellano in the Top 8. They, however, fell to the University of Santo Tomas to bow out of contention. —JMB, GMA Integrated News ?

NCAA Season 101 host Mapua to introduce new tournament format for basketball, volleyball

By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News Mapua University is set to tweak the tournament format for basketball and volleyball when it serves as host for NCAA Season 101 slated to kick off in October. Management committee representative Melchor Divina shared the development on Tuesday as Mapua formally received the hosting rights from Season 100 host Lyceum of the Philippines University. For Season 101, both basketball and volleyball will feature a group stage bracket with the 10 member schools set to be divided into two pools based on specific criteria. Once the rankings are determined after the two rounds, there will then be a play-in stage where the fourth and fifth-ranked teams will compete for the last playoff spot. Divina added that Season 101 will also introduce a crossover quarterfinals round, where the teams will duke it out in a best-of-three affair before advancing to the next round. Divina shared the new tournament format is inspired by both the NBA and the US NCAA, saying they hope this would entice more engagement from the public, especially from the students of each participating schools. "Gagawa kami ng kakaibang tournament format, pinaghalo namin 'yung NBA, US NCAA. May play-in, meron na ring quarterfinals sa basketball at volleyball," Divina said on Tuesday. "Para exciting at 'di porket fifth place ka wala ka nang chance. Nilagyan lang namin ng additional excitement lang. Kahit nasa ilalim ka may chance ka pa rin." As of now, the league is looking at opening the season on October 1 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, but Divina shared that it remains a tentative date. "October 1, tentative kasi ayun 'yung availability ng Araneta. Aaralin pa namin kasi that is Wednesday kasi for the past years weekends [and opening] e. Ano ang impact 'pag weekdays, mas marami ba ang tao so ia-assess pa namin," he said. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

FilOil: Benilde averts collapse in one-point escape vs. EAC, nears top seed

De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde nearly wasted a double-digit lead, but hung tough to escape Emilio Aguinaldo College, 86-85, in the 18th FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Sunday. Without Allen Liwag and Justine Sanchez, veteran guard Tony Ynot led the way with 17 points laced with two rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block to help the Blazers pull off the victory despite almost squandering a huge 17-point cushion. Jhomel Ancheta sent Benilde to a 72-55 lead late in the third period, but the Generals turned to EJ Castillo in the fightback that saw them pulling within the in the fourth, 81-84, thanks to four straight baskets from the rookie sensation. Castillo followed those up with another stepback jumper before Jacob Shanoda sank a pair of free throws off a foul he drew from Raffy Celis to further trim the gap to a solitary point, 85-86, with 53 seconds left in the game. EAC had a chance to win it, but Nico Quinal missed a last-gasp three-pointer attempt as Benilde held on to take its second win in a row. Benilde improved to 7-1 and could secure the top seed if it wins over Lyceum of the Philippines University (1-7) on Wednesday and if Colegio de San Juan de Letran (7-1) loses to San Beda University (4-4). In another game, graduating Yukien Andrada displayed his veteran presence in leading San Beda to a 76-70 win against the struggling Lyceum. The 6-foot-5 forward almost had a double-double outing of 21 points and nine rebounds while also getting ample help from Agjanti Miller and Nygel Gonzales. New recruit Miller posted a double-double performance of 14 points and 12 rebounds while Gonzales chipped in 13 markers, seven assists, and two boards as the also-ran Red Lions look to end their campaign on a high note. Aside from Benilde, Letran, and EAC, Arellano University is also among the NCAA teams heading to the FilOil quarterfinals while La Salle, UST, UP, and NU make up the UAAP bracket. —JMB, GMA Integrated News
