Gulf Green Transport Forum in Dhofar from August 31
The forum, organized by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, aims to exchange experiences and expertise among Gulf countries in the fields of sustainable transportation and environmentally friendly technologies, in addition to highlighting the policies and initiatives that contribute to achieving net-zero goals and reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
The forum's activities began with a virtual Gulf workshop organized by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the GCC, with the participation of representatives from the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the State of Qatar, and the State of Kuwait.
Dhofar Governorate will host sports and awareness activities for children on August 15 and 16, including a marathon and a dedicated cycling track.
The activities will be held in a safe environment and under the supervision of specialists. The aim is to instill a culture of green transportation from an early age and raise awareness of healthy and sustainable lifestyles.
The main forum will be preceded by a series of specialized workshops, most notably the "Gulf Youth Leading Change" workshop, held at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah, and the "Green Corridors for Gulf Ports" workshop. Several agreements will also be signed, paving the way for strategic partnerships in the field of green transportation.

Omani ports record rise in vessel and cargo traffic
MUSCAT, AUG 16 Oman's ports sector delivered a strong performance in the first half of 2025, driven by higher ship arrivals, container throughput, and cargo volumes, alongside vital development projects led by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTCIT) as part of efforts to upgrade port infrastructure in line with Oman Vision 2040. According to Muhanna bin Musa al Baqer, Director-General of Ports at the ministry, container handling across Salalah, Suhar and Duqm ports rose sharply, reaching 2,427,195 TEUs in the first half of 2025, compared with 2,173,508 TEUs in the same period of 2024—an increase of 11.7 per cent. He said the growth reflects the efficiency of logistics operations and the ports' ability to meet rising demand. The number of vessels calling at Omani ports and offshore terminals also climbed, totalling 6,586 ships in the first half of 2025, compared with 5,930 a year earlier, up 11.1 per cent. Key contributors to this growth included Sultan Qaboos Port, Shinas and Salalah. Cargo volumes handled across the ports reached 70.1 million tonnes in the first half of 2025, up 5.2 per cent from 66.6 million tonnes in the same period last year. The ports also received 50,248 vehicles and imported 2,694,293 head of livestock, underscoring the wide range of economic activities they support. On the development front, Al Baqer noted that the ministry has awarded a consultancy contract for the design and supervision of the Khour Grama development project, aimed at boosting the site's readiness and optimising its maritime use. Similarly, consultancy services have been commissioned for the rehabilitation of Shannah and Masirah ports, an eight-month study covering marine infrastructure such as quays, breakwaters and access bridges, along with a master plan for port organisation and development. In parallel, Shinas Port — operated by Quadrant Marine Solutions — has signed a usufruct agreement to establish a fuel storage and processing centre, with the support of MoTCIT, as part of wider efforts to diversify logistics services. Oman streamlines ID system under amended Civil Status Law: Longer validity, revised fees
Oman has implemented significant reforms to its civil identification system through Royal Oman Police Decision 78/2025, amending the Executive Regulation of the Civil Status Law originally issued under Decision 40/2007. The changes modernise card validity periods and fee structures to enhance administrative efficiency while adjusting fiscal requirements. Speaking exclusively to the Times of Oman, Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Zadjali, Founding Partner of Mohammed Ibrahim Law Firm, explained that: 'Under the previous framework, Omani nationals' identity cards had a validity of five years with an issuance or renewal fee of OMR 5 and the replacement of damage/lost fee was OMR10. Residence cards for non-Omani, on the other hand, were available with a validity of one year or two years. For a one-year residence card, the issuance or renewal fee was OMR5, and the replacement of damage/lost fee was OMR10, while for a two-year residence card, the issuance or renewal fee was OMR10, and the replacement fee was OMR20.' He added that 'the amended framework now grants 10-year validity for Omani national IDs doubling previous durations but raises issuance/renewal fees to OMR10. Crucially, the renewal window shrinks from 60 to 30 days post-expiry. For foreigners, the validity of residence cards has now increased from two years to three years. The residence card can be issued or renewed for one, two, or three years at fees of OMR5, 10, or 15 respectively, with a replacement fee of OMR20 in case of loss or damage.' Remarkable growth by ports sector in Oman
Times News Service Muscat: The Ports sector in the Sultanate of Oman has recorded an outstanding performance during the first half of 2025. This outstanding performance is driven by the increase in ships movement and handling of containers and goods coupled with vital steps taken by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology as part of the efforts for boosting the basic structure of ports. Mahana bin Moosa bin Baqer, Director General of Ports at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, said that the handling of containers saw a remarkable increase where the ports of Salalah, Sohar and Duqm received over 2.427 million containers during the first half of 2025 compared to over 2. 173 million containers during the first half 2024, a rise of 11.7 percent. This increase in the containers handling reflects the efficiency of the logistics operations and the ability of the ports in meeting the increasing demand, he added. The number of ships received by the Omani ports and piers outside the ports amounted to 5,686 during the first half of 2025 compared to 5,930 ships during the same period in 2024, an increase of 11.1 %, thanks to the contribution of the ports of Sultan Qaboos, Shinas and Salalah. He said that the goods handled through the Omani ports during the first half of 2025 amounted to over 70.114 million tonnes compared to over 66.620 million tonnes during the same period of 2024, he added.
