Firefighters battle wildfire burning out of control on Greek island
Hundreds of firefighters backed up by aircraft are battling a wildfire burning out of control for a third day on the eastern Aegean island of Chios, with authorities issuing multiple evacuation orders.
Towering walls of flames ripped through forest and agricultural land on the island, where authorities have declared a state of emergency and have sent firefighting reinforcements from Athens, the northern city of Thessaloniki and the nearby island of Lesbos.

By Tuesday morning, the fire department said 444 firefighters with 85 vehicles were tackling the blaze on scattered fronts. Eleven helicopters and two water-dropping planes were providing air support.
Emergency services have issued evacuation orders for villages and settlements in the area since Sunday, when fires broke out near the island's main town.

The fire department has sent an arson investigation team to Chios to examine the cause of the blaze.
'We are faced with simultaneous fires in multiple, geographically unconnected parts of the island – a pattern that cannot be considered coincidental,' climate crisis and civil protection minister Giannis Kefalogiannis said on Monday from Chios.

Authorities, he said, were 'very seriously examining the possibility of an organised criminal act, in other words arson'.
The minister said police forces on the island had been reinforced, while military patrols had been doubled.
'Whoever thinks that they can play with the lives of citizens and cause chaos with premeditated actions will be led to court,' Mr Kefalogiannis said. 'Arson is a serious crime and will be dealt with as such.'
Wildfires are frequent in Greece during its hot, dry summers. In 2018, a massive fire swept through the seaside town of Mati, east of Athens, trapping people in their homes and on roads as they tried to flee.

More than 100 died, including some who drowned trying to swim away from the flames.

A British couple were 'lucky to get out alive' after their home in Ibiza was destroyed in a suspected arson attack, leaving them and their children homeless. Dan and Marie Williams and their two young daughters are said to have been left 'relying on the generosity of friends' after a devastating fire ripped through their apartment building in the Playa d'en Bossa area in southern Ibiza on June 10. The blaze is believed to have been started by a local man and woman who set two restaurants and a shop on the ground floor of the block of flats alight. The flames quickly spread to the surrounding businesses and caused severe damage to the apartments above, including Dan and Marie's home on the first floor. Speaking about her family's horrifying ordeak in a Facebook post, Mrs Marie - who owns a beauty salon on the island - said: 'We were asleep in bed and ran barefoot with seconds to spare through thick smoke to escape. We were so lucky!! 'My apartment is wrecked from smoke damage so we are currently staying with friends as insurance doesn't cover enough for Ibiza prices. 'It's going to be a long journey to get back to normal in the height of summer when we are both working with two small children.' In a separate social media post, Mr Williams - a DJ - said: 'Everything is completely overwhelming for our little family at the believe that two people could set fire to a restaurant in the middle of the night knowing full well that [families] were fast asleep above them. We are so lucky and grateful to be alive.' On June 10, a fire was allegedly started by a local man and woman in the shops and buildings in the ground floor of an apartment building. Fire spread and damaged the flats above, including Dan and Marie's apartment on the first floor The father-of-two also shared police drone footage of the fire, with the video showing the whole apartment complex embattled by the blaze. A separate video shows a firefighter tirelessly hosing down the quick-spreading flames. The couple's flat is currently covered in black toxic dust and has no water supply, making their home uninhabitable. A friend of the couple, Catherine Melhuish, started a GoFundMe to raise money for the family. In the fundraiser's description, Ms Melhuish explained that the couple and their kids are having to stay with friends until their home is safe to live in again. 'My lovely friends Dan and Marie had their beautiful home destroyed by smoke damage after the huge fire in the restaurants below their apartment block in Playa d'en Bossa... This has been absolutely devastating for them and they were lucky to get out alive!', the GoFundMe says. 'The insurance only covered the cost of a hotel for a few nights and they are now relying on the generosity of friends for places to stay whilst they wait for their apartment to be safe to live in again. 'At the apartment there is no water supply and all the waste pipes have melted causing sewage to leak out under the block. Everything inside is covered in toxic black dust and the smell is unbearable.' Images shared on the fundraiser's website shows the damage done to the couple's home, with black dusk seen covering the floors and walls of the apartment. Ms Melhuish added that the couple have to get their apartment professionally cleaned and painted and also need to have all their furnishings, kitchen and bathrooms replaced. 'The insurance money offered is minimal and everything needs to be paid for upfront before the claim can be processed', she added. The couple have also had to take time off work. 'Dan is self are losing money every day,' Ms Melhuish said on the fundraising page. 'Any donations will be greatly appreciated and relieve some of their stress and worry. 'Let's help get their life back to normal and make their home a safe and clean place for Dan, Marie, the kids and their little dog to live in again.' The fire was allegedly started by a man and a woman on June 10, Spanish Eye reports. The woman, who reportedly lives on the beach, had been asked to leave one of the restaurants on the ground floor of the building the day before. She then returned with her partner the next day and allegedly set the restaurant on fire in an act of revenge. The couple were later arrested and charged with arson. This is the latest house fire to have affected Britons living in Spain. Last year, an elderly British couple were killed in a fire in their home near Benidorm. Firefighters and other emergency responders raced to the scene after being alerted by a neighbour at their porperty in the Costa Blanca resort of Denia. But there was nothing they could do to save the pair's lives and they were pronounced dead at the scene after their bodies were found inside.

Inside world's ‘grimmest' abandoned water park where moss-covered slides left to rot for a decade after tragic death

The rides and slides have been left untouched for more than ten years. 3 3 The Copa Capana Water Park, in Athens, Greece, has been abandoned since one of the world's worst amusement park horrors in 2014. 11 years ago, a teenage boy died after an accident involving one of the park's key attractions. The boy, aged 13, along with his younger sister, nine, were swept up by howling gust of wind while playing inside a large inflatable ball. They were thrown from the surface of a swimming pool into a metal barrier 30 meters away. The extent of the damage to the children was immediately apparent, and they were rushed to Agia Sofia Children's Hospital in the city. Tragically, the boy died shortly after, after sustaining major head injuries which he would never recover from. Doctors failed to resuscitate him. Thankfully, his sister managed to survive. However her injuries were critical, and she wad diagnosed with a severe lung contusion. This is where lung tissue is bruised by a major blow to the chest, which causes bleeding and fluid accumulation. Officers also began an investigation into whether safety issues had played a role in the boy's death. Now, 11 years on, a group of explorers took cameras into the abandoned park to catch a glimpse of what remains today. The 30,000 square meter park now appears to be under the exclusive management of mother nature, with overgrown plants weaving between the slides. Stagnant pools of water, which once collected those riding the flumes are now full of pond-life, such as tadpoles. Dozens of sun loungers and outdoor tables have been stored away under one of the slides. The explorers are YouTube group Urbandoned, who have 138,000 subscribers. They managed to sneak into the park round the back, and had to fight through thick layers of vegetation to get through. Eventually, a security guard approaches them, and offers to show them around abandoned areas of the amusement park. This comes after urban explorer Lukka Bradburn found an abandoned Western Village theme park near Nikkō, Tochigi, in Japan, shut its doors in 2007. It originally opened in 1973 and was inspired by classic American and Italian Western movies. Ultimately, the park later closed as a result of competition from Tokyo Disneyland. Two people taken to hospital after suspected arson in Slough
Several residents were evacuated from their homes and two people were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation after a suspected arson Valley Police said the fire started behind the buildings on Grove Parade in Slough at about 01:10 BST on Sunday.A black Land Rover was destroyed and the building was damaged. Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service is also were later allowed to return to their homes. The two people suffering the effects of breathing in smoke have left hospital. Det Insp Sarah Roxburgh said she understood the incident would be "concerning" but said officers were working hard to "bring those responsible to justice".She appealed to anyone with information or camera footage to come forward.
