British couple 'lucky to get out alive' after their apartment in Spain is destroyed in arson attack which has left them homeless

A British couple were 'lucky to get out alive' after their home in Ibiza was destroyed in a suspected arson attack, leaving them and their children homeless.
Dan and Marie Williams and their two young daughters are said to have been left 'relying on the generosity of friends' after a devastating fire ripped through their apartment building in the Playa d'en Bossa area in southern Ibiza on June 10.
The blaze is believed to have been started by a local man and woman who set two restaurants and a shop on the ground floor of the block of flats alight.
The flames quickly spread to the surrounding businesses and caused severe damage to the apartments above, including Dan and Marie's home on the first floor.
Speaking about her family's horrifying ordeak in a Facebook post, Mrs Marie - who owns a beauty salon on the island - said: 'We were asleep in bed and ran barefoot with seconds to spare through thick smoke to escape. We were so lucky!!
'My apartment is wrecked from smoke damage so we are currently staying with friends as insurance doesn't cover enough for Ibiza prices.
'It's going to be a long journey to get back to normal in the height of summer when we are both working with two small children.'
In a separate social media post, Mr Williams - a DJ - said: 'Everything is completely overwhelming for our little family at the moment...Cannot believe that two people could set fire to a restaurant in the middle of the night knowing full well that [families] were fast asleep above them. We are so lucky and grateful to be alive.'
On June 10, a fire was allegedly started by a local man and woman in the shops and buildings in the ground floor of an apartment building. Fire spread and damaged the flats above, including Dan and Marie's apartment on the first floor
The father-of-two also shared police drone footage of the fire, with the video showing the whole apartment complex embattled by the blaze.
A separate video shows a firefighter tirelessly hosing down the quick-spreading flames.
The couple's flat is currently covered in black toxic dust and has no water supply, making their home uninhabitable.
A friend of the couple, Catherine Melhuish, started a GoFundMe to raise money for the family.
In the fundraiser's description, Ms Melhuish explained that the couple and their kids are having to stay with friends until their home is safe to live in again.
'My lovely friends Dan and Marie had their beautiful home destroyed by smoke damage after the huge fire in the restaurants below their apartment block in Playa d'en Bossa... This has been absolutely devastating for them and they were lucky to get out alive!', the GoFundMe says.
'The insurance only covered the cost of a hotel for a few nights and they are now relying on the generosity of friends for places to stay whilst they wait for their apartment to be safe to live in again.
'At the apartment there is no water supply and all the waste pipes have melted causing sewage to leak out under the block. Everything inside is covered in toxic black dust and the smell is unbearable.'
Images shared on the fundraiser's website shows the damage done to the couple's home, with black dusk seen covering the floors and walls of the apartment.
Ms Melhuish added that the couple have to get their apartment professionally cleaned and painted and also need to have all their furnishings, kitchen and bathrooms replaced.
'The insurance money offered is minimal and everything needs to be paid for upfront before the claim can be processed', she added.
The couple have also had to take time off work. 'Dan is self employed...they are losing money every day,' Ms Melhuish said on the fundraising page.
'Any donations will be greatly appreciated and relieve some of their stress and worry.
'Let's help get their life back to normal and make their home a safe and clean place for Dan, Marie, the kids and their little dog to live in again.'
The fire was allegedly started by a man and a woman on June 10, Spanish Eye reports.
The woman, who reportedly lives on the beach, had been asked to leave one of the restaurants on the ground floor of the building the day before.
She then returned with her partner the next day and allegedly set the restaurant on fire in an act of revenge.
The couple were later arrested and charged with arson.
This is the latest house fire to have affected Britons living in Spain.
Last year, an elderly British couple were killed in a fire in their home near Benidorm.
Firefighters and other emergency responders raced to the scene after being alerted by a neighbour at their porperty in the Costa Blanca resort of Denia.
But there was nothing they could do to save the pair's lives and they were pronounced dead at the scene after their bodies were found inside.

Feel like a very special agent in spy agency's branded socks

GCHQ has its Christmas puzzles. The CIA posts its 'artefact of the week' on Instagram. The French DGSE spy agency holds hacking tournaments and publishes recruitment tests online. The German foreign intelligence service, though, has resorted to a whole new species of public relations tool in an effort to improve its battered image: branded tennis socks. The BND opened an online shop with 20 items, from bottle-opener key rings to Fairtrade tote bags. The cheapest of them is a lanyard — which presumably doubles as a handy garrote — for €4.90, followed by a ballpoint pen for €4.95. It is not clear whether the pen explodes or fires darts. At the upper end of the range are a thermos canister for €39 and a hoodie — 'suitable for any mission' — for €43.90. This being Germany, the latter comes with a warning that it is not official 'service clothing' and using it to pose as a spy is punishable with a prison sentence of up to two years. A white porcelain mug available for €22.95 ('Plain. Strong. Nice. For real breaks') has already sold out. The BND said it had opened the shop primarily to reach young potential recruits after experiencing 'massive' demand for the freebies it handed out at job fairs. The agency is struggling to fill several hundred posts at its headquarters in Berlin, despite receiving about 10,000 applications a year. In a shadowy world that has conventionally been shy of anything resembling PR, the BND has already taken unorthodox steps to make itself look like a more attractive employer. Last year it opened a visitor centre, which includes an interactive exhibition and a merchandise vending machine, to curious passers-by. • German efficiency? Not in the shady, inept BND spy agency It has started a podcast, Job Secret, and has put forward some of its younger officers for interviews about what their daily work entails — albeit in a carefully anonymised form. It also ran an unusually bold recruitment advertising campaign with slogans such as 'No shaking, no stirring — just apply' and 'We are looking for terrorists (male/female/other) — find them with us'. The online shop is not the first time the BND has sold merchandise to the public, however. In 2005, it set up a temporary stand in Berlin where visitors could buy items such as a compilation of the spies' favourite recipes and pairs of boxer shorts bearing the words 'classified' or 'service use only'.

Brit who axed pensioner to death learns fate after claiming he ‘accidentally' killed victim who was ‘trying to rape him'

THE Brit who axed a pensioner to death has learnt his fate after claiming he "accidentally" killed his victim who was "trying to rape him". Garo Jlitakryan, 32, admitted to attacking the 75-year-old inside the OAP's own home in Finland but claimed it was an act of self defence in court. 4 4 4 He has been sentenced to 12 years in prison by a court in Finland. The deadly fight took place in a flat in Seinajoki, western Finland, on July 29, last year, reports Finnish newspaper Iltalehti. A court previously heard how the elderly victim invited the cyclist back to his home after the pair met at a spa a day earlier. The Brit was bought a phone by his new friend as they made their way back to the flat, according to local reports. He later told investigators the pensioner said he "owed him a favour" after opening up the present. The cyclist refused but claimed he believed the man was referring to sexual acts. South Ostrobothnia District Court was then told the Brit took a short nap but when he woke up he "was tied up with bandages" and "couldn't move properly". The Brit alleged he was raped on the bed after waking up. Jlitakryan pleaded guilty to manslaughter, Southern Finland Newspapers reports, but cops found no evidence of illicit substances or materials that the pensioner victim could use to restrain the aggressor. Investigators also said the man was attacked as he was lying in bed, with crime scene images showing blood splattered up the walls. Prosecutors insisted on a 10-year sentence for the Brit after jurors found him to be culpable of murder, the news site added. The judge in the South Ostrobothnia court gave him 12 years today. Early on in the trial, Jlitakryan said he had been on a charity ride across Europe for the Help for Heroes charity. When he completed the bike ride, the Londoner said he met the pensioner at a spa in the town of Kauhava. He claimed the old man invited him back to his home and offered him work. Jlitakryan said in the trial: "He told me that if I helped him, he could give me sexual favours, but I didn't want sexual favours. I just wanted to rest and charge my phone. "We ate lunch together, which tasted terrible, then I fell asleep. When I woke up, I was tied with bandages, I couldn't move properly. "He then committed sexual acts on me and I couldn't escape. The ordeal was horrible. When it was over, he rolled next to me. "Then he started snoring and I decided to escape. I went to the kitchen and cut my ties there."

Partner of charity boss found stabbed to death in home after gas explosion appears in court charged with her murder

The partner of a charity boss found stabbed to death after a gas explosion ripped through her home has appeared in court charged with her murder. Annabel Rook, 46, was found dead at her address in Dumont Road, Stoke Newington, North London just before 5am on June 17. Clifton George, 44, appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court charged with murdering Ms Rook and arson with recklessness as to whether life would be endangered. He was remanded in custody ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing on September 24 while his trial was fixed for June 1 2026. Prosecutor Nicholas Hearn said: 'We invite the court to fix a four week trial date. 'We understand that June 1 2026 is a date that the court can accommodate, and we ask the court to fix that trial date today.' Judge Oscar Del Fabbro told George: 'You will next attend here on September 24 when you can expect to be arraigned, that is to enter for pleas. If necessary further directions will be given.' Police were called to Ms Rook's house along with 40 firefighters after the gas explosion. The front bay window of the property was completely blown out that morning, with debris including plants, wooden shutters and glass scattered across the street. Two children, aged seven and nine, were also taken to hospital as a precaution following the incident but are not thought to have been inside the home when the explosion happened. Ms Rook co-founded charity MamaSuze CIC supporting refugee and migrant women. Acting Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who is in charge of policing for the Central East Basic Command Unit, said yesterday: 'Our thoughts continue to remain with the family and friends of Annabel as they navigate this devastating loss. 'We ask that the public refrain from speculation and respect their privacy at this time, and we thank the Hackney community for their ongoing support.' Ms Rook's family have said they were 'struggling to come to terms with this terrible tragedy. 'We have lost our beautiful daughter, sister, friend and mother.' In the tribute released through the Met Police the family said: 'Annabel was a truly wonderful woman. She touched the hearts of so many. 'She gave her life to helping the vulnerable and the disadvantaged whether it was in refugee camps in Africa or setting up MamaSuze in London, to enhance the lives of survivors of forced displacement and gender-based violence. 'We would really appreciate it if our privacy could be respected.' MamaSuze said in a statement it was 'devastated by the loss of our beloved co-founder' adding: 'Annabel was a profound force for good in the world, dedicating her working life to supporting women survivors.' Anyone with information that could assist the investigation into the incident has been urged to contact police on 101 quoting CAD 926/17June. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
