French Open 2025: Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek win, setting up tremendous semifinals match
The top-ranked woman in the French Open is heading to the semifinals. Aryna Sabalenka reached the final four at the event Tuesday after defeating Qinwen Zheng in straight sets. Zheng didn't go down without a fight, forcing a tiebreak in the first set. Sabalenka was able to pull through, taking the first set 7-6. She seemed to find her stride at that point, cruising to a 6-3 win in the second set to win the match. Advertisement While Sabalenka played a strong game, unforced errors from Zheng aided in the win. Zheng registered 31 unforced errors in the loss. Sabalenka had just 18. The win pushes Sabalenka into the French Open semifinals for just the second time in her career. She also reached the semis in 2023, where she lost to Karolína Muchová. Despite her No. 1 ranking, Sabalenka has never won the French Open. She's come close in recent years. Following her semifinal appearance in 2023, Sabalenka made it to the quarterfinals in 2024. Those two appearances are the closest she's come to winning the event. Her quest to win the event will only get harder from here. Sabalenka will take on Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. Swiatek has the head-to-head advantage over their careers, winning eight of 12 matches she's played against Sabalenka. Iga Swiatek advances with win over Elina Svitolina Iga Swiatek's dominance at the French Open continued Tuesday, when she defeated Elina Svitolina to advance to the semifinals. Advertisement Swiatek got out to a dominant start, taking down Svitolina 6-1 in the first set. The second set, however, proved more challenging, as Svitolina fought back, even taking a lead at times during the set. Swiatek didn't allow Svitolina to get too big of a lead and was able to battle back, eventually making it 5-5. Swiatek got it together late, winning the final two games to give her the 7-5 win in the second set. She managed to finish off Svitolina with an ace. With the victory, Swiatek will advance to the French Open semifinals for the fifth time in her career. Every time she's made it this far at the event, she's won it. The French Open has been Swiatek's best Grand Slam over her career. It's the only Grand Slam that Swiatek has won multiple times. Given that, and her great head-to-head record against Sabalenka, Thursday's match between both players should be one of the best of the entire tournament.

Lois Boisson smells success as French Open hope reaches Paris quarterfinals
Lois Boisson smells success as French Open hope reaches Paris quarterfinals Show Caption Hide Caption Jessica Pegula on women's tennis depth and being No. 3 in WTA rankings Jessica Pegula talks about how tough it is to rank so high in the Women's Tennis Association rankings and being around other talented tennis players. Sports Seriously PARIS — The last time Lois Boisson talked about getting a big sponsor it was a joke, but now France's new tennis hope might actually land one. In April, Boisson made headlines off the court when Britain's Harriet Dart complained about her body odor during a match. The 20-year-old responded with humor, posting a photoshopped image of herself mid-serve holding a deodorant can and tagging Dove for a "much-needed collab." Fast forward to Monday and Boisson is not just making memes, she's making history. The world No. 361 stunned third seed Jessica Pegula in front of a roaring home crowd at Roland Garros to book a place in the quarterfinals and secure at least $500,000 in prize money. "It's already a big achievement to be in the quarters," Boisson said, still remarkably grounded in her post-match press conference. "My ranking will open doors to bigger tournaments, and that's what will change my life." It marked only her second appearance on Court Philippe Chatrier – the first was a single training session four years ago during qualifying. This time, though, she has looked perfectly at home in her first participation in the main draw of a Grand Slam. "When I came in, I didn't feel any more pressure than usual. The more matches I play here, the better I feel," she said. Boisson had won in three sets against compatriot Elsa Jacquemot in the third round to set up her clash with Pegula. "Of course, the last two matches were tense. I made a few mistakes because of the pressure, but in the end, it worked out – and that's what counts," she added. Boisson will next face sixth-seeded Russian Mirra Andreeva in what promises to be another electric showdown on the clay.

Top-ranked Sabalenka overcomes Zheng and windy conditions to reach French Open semis
PARIS (AP) — Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka defeated Zheng Qinwen in straight sets to reach the French Open semifinals for the second time on Tuesday. Sabalenka, who is chasing her first title at Roland-Garros, overcame a shaky start and windy conditions to prevail 7-6 (3), 6-3 and extend her record against the Olympic champion to 7-1. The score did not fully reflect the closeness of the quarterfinal, though, with so little separating the rivals. But Sabalenka demonstrated why she was the world No. 1, making the difference on big points, while Zheng struggled with her serve in tense moments. Sabalenka will try to reach her sixth Grand Slam final, and first at Roland-Garros, against defending champion Iga Swiatek or Elina Svitolina. Zheng started strong on Court Philippe-Chatrier, breaking early and dominating with aggressive play. However, two double faults in the eighth game allowed Sabalenka to break back and shift the momentum. A misjudged call by Zheng in the 12th game nearly cost her, but she fought off a set point to force a tiebreaker. Sabalenka remained more consistent and secured the set after Zheng hit long on a drop shot. Zheng saved a break point with an overhead shot in the fifth game of the second set, but Sabalenka's powerful backhand return pinned her down on the next one, allowing the top-ranked player to move ahead 3–2. Zheng did not go down without a fight, though, and broke back immediately, only to drop her two last service games. The loss ended a run of 10 consecutive match wins for Zheng at Roland-Garros, dating to last summer's Olympic Games. ___ AP tennis:
