Ahead of UN climate talks, Brazil fast-tracks oil and highway projects that threaten the Amazon

Washington Post10-06-2025
MANAUS, Brazil — Months before hosting the U.N.'s first climate talks held in the Amazon , Brazil is fast-tracking a series of controversial decisions that undercut President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's lofty environmental rhetoric and show widening divisions within his cabinet.
The country's federal environmental agency approved plans for offshore drilling near the mouth of the Amazon and rock blasting along another river in the rainforest, while Congress is moving to make it harder to recognize Indigenous land and easier to build infrastructure in the rainforest.

Maryland tax on digital ads violated Big Tech's free speech, judges say

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland's first-in-the-nation tax on digital advertising violated the Constitution, a federal appeals court says, because blocking Big Tech from telling customers about the tax violates the companies' right to free speech. Supporters say Maryland needed to overhaul its tax methods in response to significant changes in how businesses advertise. The tax focuses on large companies that make money advertising on the internet such as Meta, Google and Amazon, who say they're being unfairly targeted.

Here's where Biden's green team has landed

Jake Levine, a longtime climate change official who worked in the Biden and Obama White Houses, just launched a congressional bid in California. Levine returned to his home state in January after leaving his post as a senior climate and energy aide on the Biden White House's National Security Council. He had seen wildfires ravage his childhood home in Los Angeles and it helped spur him into the race to unseat a fellow Democrat, 15-term incumbent Rep. Brad Sherman. 'We really need to revitalize the way that we're thinking about what the Democratic Party stands for, how it's showing up, what it's fighting for,' Levine said in an interview Sunday. Advertisement Levine is among the host of former Biden climate officials launching new phases of their careers as the Trump administration works to obliterate much of what they did during the last administration, which considered climate and renewable energy work among its top priorities.

EPA extends leave for dissent letter signers to almost 2 months

EPA employees who made public their concerns about the agency's turn under the Trump administration remain barred from returning to work. For a third time, EPA has extended administrative leave for staffers who signed an open dissent letter that criticized the agency's policies on climate change and science as well as its intimidation of employees. Their leave was supposed to end Aug. 15 but has now been pushed back another two weeks, according to emails seen by POLITICO's E&E News. 'This email is to notify you that your temporary, non-duty, paid status [administrative leave] is being extended through August 29, 2025, pending the Agency's inquiry into your signature on a declaration, to include potential use of EPA time and systems,' said the email, which was sent Friday to EPA employees who signed the dissent letter. Advertisement The message added, 'It is important that you understand that this is not a disciplinary action.' The staffers on leave still are not authorized to use their identification badges, access computer systems or perform any EPA duties.
