Hanifah: Ministers' resignations won't slow progress of national plans 13MP, NESP
KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — The resignations of two key ministers will not disrupt the progress of the National Environmental, Social and Governance Strategic Plan (NESP) or the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), both of which are nearing completion, said Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib.
To a question on the progress of NESP and 13MP, Hanifah Hajar confirmed that the 13MP is almost ready to be presented to the Cabinet, while work on the NESP is actively ongoing.
'All ministries understand the importance of ESG (environmental, social and governance), and our civil servants have been working on it with clear ideas they want to implement,' she told reporters on the sidelines of the Forward Faster Symposium 2025 hosted by the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei (UNGCMYB) here today.
It was reported that the 13MP document is expected to be tabled in Parliament next month.
However, she noted that a definitive timeline for the delivery of the NESP has yet to be confirmed.
This follows the resignation of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli as Minister of Economy and the resignation of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, which will take effect on July 4.
Earlier in her keynote address at the symposium, Hanifah Hajar said the NESP is aligned with global ESG frameworks and complements six pillars under the National Sustainability Strategic Framework and Industry ESG.
'The NESP is a comprehensive initiative aimed at guiding Malaysian businesses toward ESG compliance and sustainable practices. It will support Malaysian business entities, especially small and medium enterprises in phases, to move toward ESG reporting and even beyond compliance,' she said.
The one-day symposium brought together over 200 participants, including high-level executives, sustainability practitioners, and business leaders.
With the theme 'Accelerating Corporate Sustainability Commitments for a Resilient Future,' the event featured in-depth discussions and high-level dialogues on the evolving role of business in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The discussions were seen as timely amid economic headwinds and rising geopolitical tensions, with Malaysian corporate leaders increasingly strengthening their ESG commitments and positioning sustainability as a strategic tool to manage risk, drive long-term value, and contribute to national development. — Bernama

Klang villagers up in arms over columbarium project

Village committee chairman Azhar Ibrahim said that most of the 5,000 residents in the village oppose the construction of the columbarium on a one-hectare plot of private land. He said the project had not been discussed with the residents, who only became aware of it two weeks ago. 'Many residents are worried that the village area may become polluted by ashes generated from the cremation process, particularly for homes situated less than 10 metres from the site,' he told reporters after participating in a peaceful protest on Persiaran Raja Muda Musa in Port Klang today. Dozens of village residents were at the protest, expressing their opposition to the construction of the columbarium. Azhar said that in the last two days, residents have submitted over 300 protest notices online to the Klang city council regarding the planned project. He said the villagers want the construction of the columbarium to be cancelled, to ensure the comfort of residents, especially Muslims. The imam of Kampung Raja Uda mosque, Bazaireen Baharuddin, said: 'We strongly oppose the construction of this four-storey complex' less than 50m from our place of worship. 'I am concerned that once the columbarium begins operating, it will host many religious ceremonies, making the Muslim residents here feel uncomfortable,' he said. He said the villagers hoped the MP, state assemblyman, and Klang mayor would listen to their concerns.

Manet said Cambodia adheres to the principle of maintaining peace, friendship, and good cooperation with Thailand, Bernama reported. 'Cambodia's decision to refer Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, Ta Krabei Temple and Mom Bei areas to the International Court of Justice is to seek an early, peaceful and permanent solution to the border issue in these areas rather than to prolong the uncertainty which can lead to renewed armed conflicts,' he said. Tensions between the two neighbours escalated after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a clash with Thai troops in Preah Vihear province on May 28. Manet also said that Cambodia continues to cooperate with Thailand to expedite the demarcation and delimitation of the border, save for the four mentioned areas, through a joint border commission, which is expected to meet in Phnom Penh on June 14.

Penang police chief Hamzah Ahmad said the victim, 40, got to know a woman through the phone in November last year and had a relationship with her. 'The woman invited him to join an investment scheme called Golden Crimson that offered handsome returns. The man invested RM90,510 and received returns of RM108,611,' said Hamzah. The man grew confident in the scheme and made 103 transactions with 31 different accounts totalling more than RM1.5 million from December to March and realised he was scammed when he failed to withdraw his profits of RM4.1 million through the app but was asked instead to provide additional capital to be able to withdraw.
