A tiny restaurant in Powys has been awarded one of the most prestigious awards in the world.
Chapters restaurant, which is located in Hay-on-Wye, has been awarded the coveted three green circles award from international restaurant awards body the 360°Eat Guide. The 22-seat eatery has been awarded for its efforts in sustainability and is one of only 15 restaurants in the UK to be awarded the accolade. The three green circles award comes in addition to their Michelin Green Star, which they have upheld since 2022.
The restaurant is run by Charmaine and Mark McHugo and is nestled over the English border of the quaint Welsh town of Hay-on-Wye.
Chapters also functions as a bottleshop and is housed in an old meeting room of St John's Chapel, which is one of the oldest buildings in the town. For the latest restaurant news and reviews, sign up to our food and drink newsletter here .
The restaurant sources its produce from its own kitchen garden, a half-acre plot located a few miles away within a private estate.
Charmaine oversees the growing operation and front of house, while Mark is the head chef.

Presenting the award to the Welsh restaurant, 360°Eat Guide's review read: "It's not just the seasonal, varied menu that makes you want to return to Chapters, it's something about the approach and the sharing of knowledge that makes you crave more of the good.
"Just a short distance from the restaurant are the fields where they source their vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers.

"The cooking feels genuine, curious, and distinctive—the craftsmanship and attention to detail bring out the maximum flavours without becoming pretentious. The wines are as carefully chosen as the ingredients; here, it's all about natural quality, nothing else!"
According to 360°Eat Guide, the restaurant's sustainability highlights included a set menu to reduce waste, structured training, professional development, and growth opportunities for employees, including supplier visits and foraging walks, local suppliers promoted via social media, and green renewable electricity powering the restaurant.
According to the restaurant, their single set menu changes every six weeks, which reflects the seasons.
The chef's culinary style focuses on modern British cuisine and aims to ensure no surplus produce from the garden goes to waste.
The restaurant is open for dinner from Thursday to Saturday, 5pm-10.30pm, and for lunch on Saturdays from 12-2pm starting from springtime.

The aim is to improve customer journeys across the North and facilitate better transport links between towns and cities like Manchester and Leeds. Now, as major work begins to take place in the railways across Huddersfield and Deighton, customers have been urged to plan ahead. Gareth Hope, TRU sponsor, said: 'This period marks one of the most significant phases of work on the Transpennine Route Upgrade to date, delivering vital improvements that will bring faster, more reliable journeys to customers for generations. 'Whilst we know our work will cause disruption, we'd like to thank customers and local residents for their patience as we deliver generational change to their stations and their rail journeys.' Exact closure dates Huddersfield train station will be closed from Saturday, August 30 until Sunday, September 28. Three scenic train journeys you can take in the UK Cornish Coast - One trip that rail enthusiasts seem to love is along a stretch of the Cornish coast and takes just 10 minutes to complete. The route from St Erth to St Ives only stops at Carbis Bay en route to its final destination, but the views out the window for the whole journey are pretty spectacular. Another highlight of the journey is that St Ives station is situated right next to Porthminster beach, meaning the sand and sea can be accessed almost immediately. Meanwhile, the station is less than a ten minute walk into town, where the harbour, shops, galleries and pubs can be explored. Durham to Edinburgh - Another train route that people in the UK love is the East Coast train line between Durham and Edinburgh, with coastal views and city landscapes among the sights that can be seen out the window. Newcastle, Berwick, Lindisfarne and Durham Cathedral are all among the highlights on that route. Scotland's West Highland Line - While Scotland is home to plenty of famous landmarks and top attractions, it also has one of the most breathtaking train routes in the world. Once open, the new Deighton station will boast two new tracks to allow faster services to overtake slower ones. It will also extend platforms to facilitate longer trains with more seats for passengers and there will also be a new footbridge with lifts for step-free access to both platforms. During both railway closures, hourly rail replacement buses will operate to enable passengers to complete their journeys. During this time, there will also be a number of road closures around both stations. However, customers are urged to check before travelling via or their train operator's website. The closures come as another railway line is set to shut next month. Thousands of passengers travelling to Gatwick Airport will be affected sparking travel chaos for holidaymakers.

Questions about office leaving gifts, children's birthday parties and splitting restaurant bills will decide whether you're a 'Polite Pippa' or 'Generous George'. It comes after a poll of 2,000 adults, commissioned by new savings app, Spring, found Brits spend £1,025 a year on other people, including paying for hen and stag dos, colleague's leaving gifts and children's parties. Half (52 per cent) feel pressured into attending expensive social events, with an average of £207 per guest spent on weddings, £191 on milestone birthdays and an average of £150 on hen and stag dos. Others feel obliged to attend or contribute to group meals out, baby showers and housewarmings, as well as donating to fundraisers. Head of money for the app, Derek Sprawling, said: 'Many of us feel pressure to say yes to social events that are becoming more and more expensive. 'While the quiz questions are hypothetical, it features occasions we can all relate to from the sinking feeling of seeing another wedding invite come in to dipping into savings for another person's birthday. 'In a social media world, many people want to celebrate landmark events in style and not down the local pub, which is putting more and more pressure on budgets. 'One way consumers can manage this is by learning to say no to events they don't want to go in a gracious way that doesn't offend.' The research also found 51 per cent would rather spend their money elsewhere than on other people, with 59 per cent of those preferring to save the cash. Tax and spending package of €9.4bn to form basis of Budget 2026 While 47 per cent would opt to put it towards a holiday and 33 per cent would rather spend on their hobbies. Among the top events people have attended when they didn't really want to were group meals (21 per cent), weddings (18 per cent) and big birthday parties (17 per cent). And the most individuals have ever spent on an occasion which they didn't want to partake in is £239. Almost half (46 per cent) have had to dip into their savings to cover the costs, resulting in delaying or putting off their own goals of travelling (36 per cent) or buying a home (19 per cent). In typical British fashion, the fear of looking rude (34 per cent), stingy (28 per cent) or being the 'difficult' one (28 per cent) made people feel obliged to contribute to or attend events. But many have felt annoyed (22 per cent) and irritated (29 per cent) about social spending expectations, with 41 per cent feeling there are too many celebratory occasions nowadays. And the likes of gender reveal gifts (44 per cent), overseas hen and stag dos (38 per cent) and evenly splitting restaurant bills (18 per cent) are seen as unnecessary spending. It also emerged 35 per cent of those polled, via OnePoll, have felt stressed when they had little time to pay for something which they hadn't pre-planned, with the ideal notice period being nine weeks before the event. Derek added: 'Given the pressure on finances these events can create, if you are going to attend, making sure your money is working as hard as possible is vital, including the interest from your savings. 'We find too many people accept a poor rate of return from their bank when they could be generating much more from a higher interest account, helping to contribute to these unexpected costs.'
