KET revives Fancy Farm coverage, thanks to donation

Kentucky Educational Television has revived its plans to cover the annual Fancy Farm political rally on Aug. 2 in Western Kentucky. Shae Hopkins, executive director and CEO of KET, said in a press release a donation from the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce will make the coverage possible. 'We're grateful to the Kentucky Chamber, a longtime corporate partner and supporter of KET, for helping us to continue this decades-long tradition of bringing viewers across the state coverage of this iconic event,' Hopkins said. The release did not disclose the specific donation amount. Earlier this summer, Fancy Farm organizers announced Kentucky Chamber President and CEO Ashli Watts would emcee the event. KET previously said it planned to eliminate its coverage of Fancy Farm because of federal funding cuts. A rescission bill that stripped $9 billion in federal funding for public broadcasting, global health initiatives and foreign aid programs was given final passage July 17. Fancy Farm is a political picnic and rally held each summer in Graves County, where candidates and elected officials take jabs at their opponents before an often rowdy audience. The bipartisan event has become more Republican-heavy in recent years as Democrats have lost significant ground in the state. This year, picnic-goers can expect to hear from all three high-profile Republicans running to replace outgoing U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell: U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, former Attorney General Daniel Cameron and businessman Nate Morris. On the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman and state Rep. Pamela Stevenson, who is also running to replace McConnell, have declined to speak. The only confirmed Democratic speaker so far is John "Drew" Williams, who is challenging U.S. Rep. James Comer in Kentucky's 1st Congressional District race. KET will livestream coverage beginning at 2:30/1:30 pm CT Aug. 2 with host Renee Shaw and analysts Bob Babbage and Trey Grayson. The station will air highlights from the event at 8/7 p.m. Aug. 3. Reach reporter Hannah Pinski at hpinski@ or follow her on X, formerly known as Twitter, at @hannahpinski. French president Macron sues influencer over claim France's first lady was born male

(Corrects Brigitte Macron's age in third paragraph to 72 from 52) (Reuters) -French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte filed a defamation lawsuit in the U.S. on Wednesday against right-wing influencer Candace Owens, centered on her claim that France's first lady is male. The Macrons said in a lawsuit filed in Delaware Superior Court that Owens has waged a lie-filled "campaign of global humiliation" and "relentless bullying" to promote her podcast and expand her "frenzied" fan base. The Macrons said the lies included that Brigitte Macron, 72, was born under the name Jean-Michel Trogneux, the actual name of her older brother. "Every time the Macrons leave their home, they do so knowing that countless people have heard, and many believe, these vile fabrications," the complaint said. "It is invasive, dehumanizing, and deeply unjust." Owens did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comment. Macron's office declined comment. The 22-count complaint seeks an unspecified amount of compensatory and punitive damages. Wednesday's lawsuit is a rare case of a world leader suing for defamation. U.S. President Donald Trump has filed multiple defamation lawsuits, including against the publisher of The Wall Street Journal last week. To prevail in U.S. defamation cases, public figures like the Macrons and Trump must show defendants engaged in "actual malice," meaning they knew what they published was false or had reckless disregard for its truth. Skydance Promises FCC It Will Eliminate DEI at Paramount, Appoint CBS News Ombudsman to Review ‘Complaints of Bias'

Skydance Media has made additional promises to the FCC in an effort to get approval for its $8 billion merger with Paramount Global. In letters addressed to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, Skydance's top lawyer said the company will eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at Paramount and to install an 'ombudsman' to review 'complaints of bias or other concerns' involving CBS. Kyoko McKinnon's letter continued, 'Skydance, for its part, does not have DEI programs in place today and will not establish such initiatives. The company is committed to ensuring that its storytelling reflects the many audiences and communities it serves in a manner that complies with non-discrimination requirements and other applicable laws.' In a second letter pledging to maintain 'viewpoint diversity,' Kyoko McKinnon wrote, 'To promote transparency and increased accountability, Skydance also will commit, for a period of at least two years, to have in place an ombudsman who reports to the President of New Paramount, who will receive and evaluate any complaints of bias or other concerns involving CBS. New Paramount's executive leadership will carefully consider any such complaints in overseeing CBS's news programming. In evaluating Comcast's acquisition of NBCUniversal, the Commission found such a mechanism effective in preventing editorial bias in the operation of the NBC broadcast network.' Jeff Shell, former head of NBCUniversal, is set to become president of Skydance Paramount Corp. David Ellison, CEO of Skydance, is to become the merged company's CEO and chairman. Regarding DEI, Kyoko McKinnon wrote, 'Although Paramount must have a highly talented, dedicated, and creative workforce that understands the perspectives and experiences of its varied audiences, the Administration's recent Executive Orders, the Supreme Court's decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard (SFFA), and federal mandates impact the company's approach to those objectives. As a result of a review of Paramount's DEI programs, which began after the SFFA decision, the company announced significant changes in February 2025 to its recruiting and hiring practices to align them with current equal employment opportunity requirements. We understand that Paramount also eliminated or modified DEI programs across the company to ensure that they are consistent with the company's commitment to equal opportunity and governing law.' With respect to hiring Practices, Paramount 'will not engage in any DEI-related disparate treatment in hiring decisions and no longer will set numerical goals related to the race, ethnicity, sex, or gender of job applicants or employee hires in the United States. Instead, the company will focus on attracting talent from all geographies, backgrounds, and perspectives,' the Skydance counsel's letter said. The letters, both dated July 22, were posted publicly on the FCC website on Wednesday.
