Military action need of the hour: Ex-J&K police chiefs

SRINAGAR: With India mulling options after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, two former J&K police chiefs have said military action now is a compulsion for India and that the action must be bigger than surgical or Balakote strikes to eliminate Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.
Former J&K police chief Kuldip Khoda told this newspaper that the Pahalgam attack is a continuation of the situation prevailing in J&K for the past 35 years. Khoda, who served as J&K police chief from 2007-2012, said Pakistan army and the ISI have all through been guiding, calibrating and training terrorists.
'It has been revealed not once but hundreds of times during interrogation of arrested terrorists. They had revealed that they were trained by regular and retired Pakistani army men and sometimes training would take place at regular army camps,' he said.
According to Khoda, the Pahalgam attack was planned before the Pakistan army chief's controversial statement on two-nation theory. 'Terrorists had done recce of Amusement Park in Pahalgam on April 15 and this was revealed by OGWs (over-ground workers), who were aware of terrorists' presence in Baisaran.
Terrorists were in Baisaran from April 20. They had done recce in Betaab Valley and Aru Valley,' he said, adding, 'In Pahalgam attack, terrorists were using a satellite phone, which was linked to a Chinese satellite.'

‘Borders have been quiet': NSA Ajit Doval on India-China ties during talks with Chinese FM

There has been an 'upward trend' in India-China relations over the past nine months as peace and tranquillity prevailed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), National Security Adviser Ajit Doval said on Tuesday during talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Doval and Wang met under the Special Representatives (SR) mechanism ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin on August 31 and September 1, which was formally announced by Doval. In his televised opening remarks, Doval recalled his visit to Beijing in December for the previous round of SR talks and said: 'Borders have been quiet, there has been peace and tranquillity, our bilateral engagements have been more substantial.' He added that Modi's upcoming trip gave the SR talks 'a very special importance.' The NSA also referred to Modi's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan last October, which came days after the two sides reached a disengagement pact at the remaining friction points of Depsang and Demchok in eastern Ladakh. 'The new environment that has been created has helped us in moving ahead in the various areas that we were working on,' Doval said. Wang said both sides should 'increase mutual trust through strategic communication, expand common interest through exchanges and cooperation, and properly settle the specific issues' along the border. 'We are heartened to see the stability that is now restored in the borders,' he noted. 'Now the bilateral relationship is facing an important opportunity of improvement and growth. The Chinese side attaches great importance to the prime minister's visit to China to attend the SCO Summit at our invitation,' Wang added. Wang arrived in Delhi on Monday for a two-day visit, widely seen as part of efforts to rebuild ties after the Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. The SR talks were expected to review the LAC situation and consider new confidence-building measures. Although both sides have completed disengagement from friction points, they have yet to de-escalate by pulling back around 50,000–60,000 troops each from the LAC in eastern Ladakh. The military standoff that began in May 2020 effectively ended after the October 2024 agreement, and since then both countries have sought to stabilise ties, including resuming the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and India restarting tourist visas for Chinese nationals. China pledges to address India's rare earth needs, Indian source says

There is an upward trend in India-China relations and Beijing has promised to address New Delhi's needs on rare earths, a top Indian official and a source said on Tuesday, as the neighbours rebuild ties that were damaged by a 2020 border clash. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is visiting India for the 24th round of border talks with Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and is also due to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, days before Modi travels to China for the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation . "There has been an upward trend. Borders have been quiet. There has been peace and tranquillity," Doval told Wang as he opened the talks. Wang told Doval that "the stable and healthy development of China-India relations is in the fundamental interests of the two countries' people," according to a readout of the meeting released by China's foreign ministry. Live Events The two sides "should enhance mutual trust through dialogues and expand cooperation," Wang said, and should aim for consensus in areas such as border control and demarcation negotiations. Earlier on Tuesday, an Indian source said that China had promised to address three key Indian concerns. Wang, the source said, had assured Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar that Beijing is addressing India's need for fertilisers, rare earths and tunnel boring machines. The Indian foreign and mines ministries did not respond immediately to Reuters requests for comment. China's commerce ministry also did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It was not immediately clear whether China had agreed to approve export licenses faster or grant blanket exemptions for India. China has previously committed to speeding up export licenses for Europe and the U.S. without actually dismantling the control regime. China's exports of rare earths and related magnets jumped in June after these agreements and as the commerce ministry worked through a huge backlog of applications. However, rare earth magnet exports to India were still down 58% compared to January levels, according to Chinese customs data. June is the last month for which country-level data is available. India has the world's fifth-largest rare earth reserves, at 6.9 million metric tons, but has no magnet production and relies on imported magnets, mainly from China.

'No Change In India's Position On Taiwan': Govt Sources Rebut Chinese Claims

A Chinese statement insinuated that external affairs minister S Jaishankar had acknowledged Taiwan as a part of China during his meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi A day after Beijing claimed that India had reaffirmed that Taiwan is a part of China, Indian government sources told CNN-News18 that there has been no change in New Delhi's position on Taiwan. The Chinese statement, which was released in an official English readout, insinuated that external affairs minister S Jaishankar had acknowledged Taiwan as a part of China during his meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi. This claim immediately triggered speculation due to the highly sensitive geopolitical dynamics of the Taiwan Strait. Despite the official Chinese foreign ministry release, Indian government sources quickly pushed back on the assertion. They clarified that there is no change in India's long-standing, nuanced stance on Taiwan. The sources stressed that, like many other countries around the world, India maintains a relationship with Taiwan that is focused on economic, technological, and cultural ties, and that these ties are intended to continue. According to sources, during the India-China foreign minister's meeting on Monday, when Wang Yi urged India not to deal with Taiwan, Jaishankar argued that 'China itself was dealing in the same areas that we in India were. So how is that possible?" This retort underscored India's intent to continue its robust, albeit unofficial, engagement with Taipei without being dictated by Beijing's foreign policy demands, said sources. India seeks to stabilise its relationship with China following recent border tensions while simultaneously expanding its strategic and economic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific. At the meeting with Wang, Jaishankar had highlighted that the two countries faced a 'difficult period" and now seek to move forward with ties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit China at the end of the month for the Heads of States Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in the city of Tianjin. view comments First Published: August 19, 2025, 17:13 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
