Team from Cumbernauld school celebrate winning Girls National Handball Championships
St Mary's Primary School recently installed a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) as part of a broader plan to replace old red blaes pitches across North Lanarkshire.
St Mary's Primary School in Cumbernauld is celebrating winning the Girls National Handball Championships, thanks in part to a brand-new sports facility.
The school recently installed a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) as part of a broader plan to replace old red blaes pitches across North Lanarkshire.
The 40m x 20m pitch is a full-size handball court, and it also includes markings for basketball, football, tennis and netball. It even has lower basketball hoops to suit younger pupils. The rest of the old pitch area has been turned into grass with 5-a-side goals.
The MUGA is open to the community for free outside school hours and at weekends, making it an excellent space for local people to enjoy.
Councillor Michael McBride, Convener of Education, Children and Families with North Lanarkshire Council, said: 'This is a great example of how we're investing in our schools and communities.
'The new MUGA at St Mary's is already helping pupils to achieve their sporting goals and gives the wider community a fantastic space to stay active. It's great to see handball and other sports growing, thanks to strong partnerships and high-quality facilities.'
Handball is becoming more popular across North Lanarkshire, with strong development in Airdrie, Coatbridge, and Wishaw. Cumbernauld's Tryst '77 Handball Club is leading the way, offering sessions for all ages and working closely with local schools.
Coach Mark McGuinness, along with assistant coaches and teachers, runs regular handball sessions at Baird Memorial, Whitelees, and St Mary's Primary Schools, as well as taster sessions in other schools.
Mark said: 'Tryst '77 is already planning to use the new MUGA for pre-season training and outdoor sessions when the weather's good. This success is down to great teamwork between Active Schools, Active NL, Tryst '77, and the Scottish Handball Association.
'We're all working together to grow handball and help more people get active across North Lanarkshire.'

Three new synthetic sports pitches open across North Lanarkshire
Each of the 3G all-weather pitches represents a £1.1 million investment, covering ground and drainage improvements, floodlight infrastructure, fencing, and the installation of FIFA-certified surfaces and shock pads. Three brand-new, FIFA-quality synthetic sports pitches are now open in Cleland, Harthill and Moodiesburn, providing state-of-the-art facilities for local communities, schools and sports clubs to enjoy. Each of the 3G all-weather pitches represents a £1.1 million investment, covering ground and drainage improvements, floodlight infrastructure, fencing, and the installation of FIFA-certified surfaces and shock pads. The result is a modern, safe and accessible space for football, fitness and community activities, come rain or shine. Located at Grey Street (Cleland), Dunn Terrace (Harthill) and Gartferry Road (Moodiesburn), the pitches are designed to encourage sporting activities for all ages, with availability for public use when not booked by local schools or teams. Councillor Louise Roarty, Depute Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said: 'These new pitches are about more than just sport, they're about creating opportunities for young people to be active, for local clubs to grow, and for communities to come together in a safe, welcoming environment. 'By investing in high-quality facilities like these, we're supporting the health, wellbeing and happiness of residents across our communities. We're excited to see the enjoyment, teamwork and lasting memories these spaces will bring for years to come.' David Taylor, Chairperson for Yett Farm FC added: 'Having already used the new 4G facility in Cleland, our club can confirm it's a first-class facility. 'We hope that we can continue our ongoing partnership with the council and be considered for regular use of the facility. With us being a local team and having this facility on our doorstep makes a huge difference.'

Hamilton Accies' move to Broadwood 'no-brainer' with club saving over £500k a season
The club are set to agree a two-year lease with North Lanarkshire Council, with the option of a further year, after leaving New Douglas Park earlier this month Hamilton Academical's move to Broadwood Stadium will save the club over half a million pounds a season, Lanarkshire Live Sport can reveal. The Lanarkshire side were relegated from the Championship to League One earlier this month after being hit with a 15-point deduction for breaching multiple SPFL rules, and they are now preparing to complete a move across the region to Cumbernauld's Broadwood Stadium. Accies chairman Jock Brown issued an open letter to supporters last night explaining that the club is leaving New Douglas Park because stadium owner Colin McGowan, who was trying to sell the facility to current Accies owner Seref Zengin, 'made it impossible' for them to stay in the town. The club claims Mr McGowan refused to provide the necessary information showing what liabilities any new owner would take on, giving Accies 'no option' but to leave. And now the eye-watering costs facing Accies under their recent lease go some way to explaining their move. From July 2023 to February 2024, it cost the club £714,000 to lease New Douglas Park, while switching to Broadwood in a groundshare agreement with Lowland League outfit Cumbernauld Colts will cost the club £6,900 a month or £82,800 over the course of a year. Accies are currently in the process of agreeing a two-year lease with North Lanarkshire Council, with the option of a further year. The impending switch has. A fan petition which has garnered almost 1500 signatures has also been set up to try and stop the move. However, it appears there is no going back to New Douglas Park as the club are seeking a brand new stadium site in the town during their temporary switch to Cumbernauld. A spokesman for Accies said: "Quite literally, this keeps the club alive for five years or so at the cost of one year at New Douglas Park. "It also allows the club to invest in the academy and the first team as well. It is a no-brainer financially." Hamilton are due to return to pre-season training on June 19 but they will not be able to train on the Broadwood pitch, with the surface being relayed over the summer. Any sessions will be held on the public park adjacent to the stadium, while Accies are also considering a training camp elsewhere for their preparations.
