Air India probe of Boeing 787 fuel control switches finds no issues

NEW DELHI – India's aircraft accident investigation body said on July 17 it was too early to reach any 'definite conclusions' on what led to the deadly Air India Boeing plane crash in June that killed 260 people.
'We urge both the public and the media to refrain from spreading premature narratives that risk undermining the integrity of the investigative process,' Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) chief GVG Yugandhar said, adding the investigation is still not complete.
Earlier on July 17, the Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with US officials' early assessment of evidence, reported that a cockpit recording of dialogue between the two pilots of the flight indicated that the
captain cut the flow of fuel to the plane's engines.
The AAIB's preliminary report on the crash on July 12 said one pilot was heard on the cockpit voice recorder asking the other why he cut off the fuel and 'the other pilot responded that he did not do so'. It did not identify who made those remarks.
The two pilots in the flight deck were Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kunder, who had total flying experience of 15,638 hours and 3,403 hours, respectively.
First Officer Kunder, who was flying the plane, asked Capt Sabharwal why he moved the fuel switches to the 'cutoff' position seconds after lifting off the runway, according to the Journal report.
The newspaper did not say if there was any evidence that Capt Sabharwal did move the switches, beyond the verbal exchange it cited.

But it quoted US pilots who have read the Indian authorities' report as saying that First Officer Kunder, the pilot actively flying, likely would have had his hands full pulling back on the Dreamliner's controls at that stage of the flight. REUTERS

A 25-year-old male Indian national was arrested for his suspected involvement in a case of shop theft committed in the transit area of Changi Airport. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a statement that they were informed about a case of shop theft at a retail outlet located in the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 3 on August 16 at about 1.41 pm. According to the preliminary investigations, the man allegedly stole a pocket organizer and a bracelet from the store's display shelves, totaling S$1515, and fled without paying. The SPF said that the officers from Airport Police Division established the man's identity through follow-up investigations and with the aid of CCTV footage. "The man was arrested in the transit area within an hour of the report, preventing him from departing Singapore. The alleged stolen items were recovered from his possession," added the police. On Monday, August 18, the man will face charges of stealing in a dwelling under Section 380 of the Penal Code 1871. If found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, a fine, or both.

A man who was caught smoking by two Indian National Environment Agency (NEA) officers and then claimed the duo had racist motivations, has been blasted online. The incident is said to have taken place at Changi Airport Terminal 1. In a two-minute clip filmed by the man, who isn't seen in the video, he says he is Chinese and that the officers were racist for penalising him while letting an Indian couple and an Indian man off for the same offence. The officers, a man and a woman, do not respond to his accusations. The female officer is on her mobile phone speaking with her supervisor, while the male officer speaks only to tell the man not to interrupt her while she is on the phone. The man responds by saying that he is also on the phone and continues accusing them of being racist. He further claims they are refusing to follow him to the police station where he wants to lodge a report against them. He also threatens to post the video on social media. In a TikTok post, thomasong220 identifies himself as the man filming the clip, saying: "The court case mentioned is in Sep. I will definitely pay the fine but I will definitely challenge why they didn't take action on that Indian man and couple." Commenters noted that the matter could be easily clarified with the officers' bodycam footage, while others like aHRoy did not seem convinced: "whatever the case is, you are still in the wrong for smoking in the wrong place, no?" Eudaemonia added, "wrong is wrong, don't throw race card to make it right." The video was also shared on the Singapore Incidents Facebook page on Aug 17 and had garnered more than 600,000 views, almost 6,000 reactions, and some 1,600 comments at press time. It was also shared on Reddit. However, while some wondered why no action was taken against the other alleged offenders, most commenters did not side with the man and asked for proof of the supposed double standard. "Just because someone gets away with a crime it doesn't (exempt) you from committing a crime. You got caught on the spot and now trying to talk your way out of it. Shame," said Niwde101 on Reddit. Chan Kah Wai Vincent commented on Facebook: "1. You are caught, period. 2. If you got evidence that enforcement let off an Indian man and another couple, then there are channels which you can bring up to let justice prevail. 3. If not, you may be slapped with additional charges with your video. 4. Anyway, lots of cameras at Changi Airport." "Everytime when you get caught for doing something wrong, you start creating another fairytale unfair story and take video. Do something wrong, just accept it, la," commented EssayInteresting8398 on Reddit. Several Chinese commenters found the claim of racism embarassing. "Changi got CCTV everywhere. Why you extra and say racist racist?! Siao. This is the type of Chinese that give us all a bad name. DISGRACE!" said the_sigma_snake on Reddit. And of course, someone had to reference that infamous meme. "Is it because I'm Chinese? No lah, it's because you're smoking," said MapleViolet on Reddit. Former Chinese ambassador to Singapore Sun Haiyan was likely questioned by the authorities earlier in August in connection with a probe into her superior, Mr Liu Jianchao, but she has since returned to work, The Straits Times understands. A smiling Ms Sun, 53, appeared at an event organised by the Indian embassy in Beijing on Aug 15 evening, suggesting that she is not necessarily implicated in whatever trouble Mr Liu could be in. The Wall Street Journal had reported on Aug 10 that Mr Liu, who heads the Communist Party of China International Department (CPCID) and was seen as a front runner to become foreign minister, had been taken away for questioning after he returned to Beijing in late July from a work trip overseas. The reason for his detention remains unclear. Reuters then reported on Aug 15 that Ms Sun was also detained , citing three people with knowledge of the matter. As at Aug 15, both Mr Liu and Ms Sun remain listed as the minister and vice-minister of the CPCID on its website. The department manages the party's ties with foreign political parties. A source familiar with the situation told ST on Aug 15 that Ms Sun had been uncontactable for several days, often a sign that someone has been taken in for questioning by the authorities. But the source also noted that it is standard procedure for the authorities to question those who have worked closely with a person under investigation, and that this does not in itself imply wrongdoing. Another source said on the afternoon of Aug 15 that Ms Sun was 'working normally' and that news of her attending a diplomatic event that day 'would be out soon'. That evening, Mr Wang Zichen, a research fellow at the Beijing-based Centre for China and Globalisation, posted photos of Ms Sun at an ongoing reception in Beijing marking India's Independence Day. She stood next to Chinese Foreign Vice-Minister Miao Deyu in a crowded ballroom, the photos showed. Ms Sun, a Hebei native, holds a doctorate in law from Peking University and has studied at Japan's Kyushu University. She joined the International Department in 1997, serving various roles including as spokesperson and head of the bureau responsible for ties with South-east Asian countries. She served as ambassador to Singapore from May 2022 to July 2023.
