'Can Be Invasive...': Transgender Athlete Nikki Hiltz Concerned About Precedent Set By Gene Tests
The 30-year-old non-binary athlete expressed disappointment over World Athletics' plans to introduce gene tests and enumerated the consequences that might follow.
American distance runner Nikki Hiltz slammed World Athletics' plans to introduce gene testing for female athletes, claiming that the idea of gender tests could be a steep slope in an undesired direction.
The 30-year-old transgender and non-binary athlete expressed disappointment over the governing body's scheme and enumerated the consequences that might follow. Hiltz, who was assigned a female at birth, came out as transgender and non-binary in 2021.
'Sex testing is a slippery slope," Hiltz said securing their berth at the World Championships with a win in the women's 1,500m at the US trials in Oregon.
'Obviously, I'm gonna do it. I'm not gonna, like, protest it or anything. I just don't like the precedent that it sets," they said.
WA carries gene tests using blood sample or cheek swab, which the organisation has backed to be extremely acurate with false alarms being a rare commodity.
'If this is the top of the sport setting these rules, how does this trickle down to the NCAA or youth programs?" they asked.
'Sex testing can be very invasive. Like this is just like a harmless cheek swab. Maybe for different organizations, it's not that. And that scares me."
'The biggest thing for me is it's not solving a problem that exists," they said. 'So what is this time, energy, money going for? It's not a problem that we face.
'What we do face is abusive coaches. Doping allegations. Why aren't we putting our time and energy, money, into that? It's pretty disappointing," they added.
WA will conduct tests for the SRY gene, which is found on the Y chromosome and is responsible for the development of male characteristics. Athletes who test negative for the Y chromosome are eligible to compete in the female category at world-ranking competitions. However, if the test is positive, they can only compete in the female category at non-world-ranking events or in a different category other than female.
Athletics has been considering introducing eligibility criteria for women's events for a long time, in response to questions about biological advantages for transgender athletes and those with differences of sex development (DSD).
Currently, transgender women who have undergone male puberty are banned by World Athletics from competing in women's events. Additionally, the federation requires female DSD athletes, whose bodies produce high testosterone levels, to take medication to lower these levels in order to be eligible.

Will Chris Woakes Come In To Bat On Day 5 Of Oval Test? Joe Root Gives Big Update
Last Updated: England's Joe Root has lauded Chris Woakes' dedication despite injury, comparing him to India's Rishabh Pant. Ace England batter Joe Root has said that, as everyone saw India vice-captain Rishabh Pant coming in to bat during the fourth Test despite fracturing his toe, Chris Woakes is also ready to put his body on the line for the team, although he is in immense pain. Woakes had to leave the field on Thursday after landing on his left shoulder while saving a ball smacked by Karun Nair at long-off late during Day 1 of the game. Woakes looked in visible pain as he walked off the field with his left arm wrapped in his sweater. 'Chris Woakes is in a huge amount of pain. We have seen this series, Rishabh Pant batting with a broken foot, Woakes is ready to put his body on the line for England," Root said while speaking at the end of the day's play on Sunday, August 3. At the end of the day, England needed 35 runs to win and India needed three wickets, but if Woakes comes in to bat on Monday, India would need four wickets. 'England seamer Chris Woakes will continue to be monitored throughout the remainder of the Rothesay Fifth Test at The Kia Oval, following a left shoulder injury sustained on day one of the match against India," the ECB had said in a statement on Friday. 'At this stage, the injury has ruled him out of any further participation in the Test. A further assessment will be conducted after the series," the ECB added. Woakes bowled 14 overs on Day 1, picking up the crucial wicket of KL Rahul and conceding 46 runs. Woakes' injury has added to the woes of England, who are missing multiple key cricketers, including skipper Ben Stokes. Gus Atkinson picked up two wickets from his 19 overs on Day 1 and seemed confident to take up the responsibility in Woakes' absence. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. What Was The Reason Behind Joe Root's Unique Celebration After Another Hundred?
Last Updated: Joe Root scored his 39th Test century, paying tribute to Graham Thorpe, who died by suicide. Root wore a bandana in Thorpe's style, highlighting mental health issues in cricket. On Sunday, seasoned England batter Joe Root scored his 39th Test century and paid tribute to former England batter Graham Thorpe, who died by suicide on August 4, 2024. Root honoured Thorpe, whose birth anniversary was two days prior, by wearing a bandana in his style on the fourth day of the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval. Root anchored England's second innings and established a crucial partnership with Harry Brook. Together, they shared a 195-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Root reached his century with a double in the 60th over, bowled by Akash Deep. He achieved his hundred off 137 balls, hitting 12 fours. What particularly caught the eye and earned appreciation from England fans was his tribute after reaching the century. Root kissed the badge on his helmet, raised his bat to acknowledge the crowd's applause, then donned the 'Graham Thorpe headband' and pointed skyward. Watch: Thorpe was a premier batsman for England in both red-ball and white-ball cricket from the mid-90s until 2005 when he retired. He served as the batting coach for the England Test team until he was dismissed, along with other support staff, following England's 0-4 defeat in the Ashes series of 2021-22. Thorpe, aged 55, died by suicide by stepping in front of a train. His family publicly disclosed that he had been struggling with mental health issues to raise awareness. By paying tribute to Thorpe upon completing his century, Root has brought attention to the mental health issues increasingly affecting cricketers due to the demanding lifestyle and various formats of the modern-day game. The left-handed batsman, who spent his entire professional career in south London with Surrey, scored 6,744 Test runs at an average of 44.66 in 100 matches from 1993 to 2005. Thorpe later held various coaching positions, including a role as England's batting coach, where he worked with current players such as Test captain Ben Stokes and Root. Antim, Manisha shine at World Wrestling Championships trials; Vaishanvi has a breakthrough day to remember
It was an easy day for Paris Olympian Antim Panghal, who faced no resistance from her competitors in the 53kg category trials on Sunday at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium and booked her berth for the World Wrestling Championships. Already a World Championship medallist with bronze in the last edition, Antim went past Pooja in the semi-finals, dominating the bout and her 'fitle' move resulting in injury to her opponent. In the final, Antim was the superior wrestler and defeated Hinaben to ensure her participation at the tournament for the second time. Coming on the back of two Ranking Series wins, Antim is expected to be one of the seeded Indian wrestlers at the World Championships. The 20-year-old Antim will be hoping for some redemption after her controversial participation at the Olympics last year, where she got in trouble for misusing her accreditation after her early exit from the event. Antim admitted making 'mistakes' but insisted it was just a case of confusion in Paris. 'The federation did not have any issue with me. There was confusion, I also made mistake. I did not realise that it was getting out of hand. Olympics is different from Asian Games and World Championships. I did not know much,' she told reporters. 'There was a Games village, which was also there at the Asian Games but we had stayed at a hotel in the Asian Games (Hangzhou), there was confusion, I had never experienced such an environment. There was pressure and I spoilt my bouts due to that. Then I was asked to be at the camp. The federation has been helpful, I was sent to two tournaments where I won gold.' Antim added. Recently crowned Asian Champion Manisha Bhanwala was one of the two wrestlers in the 62 kg category and defeated Mansi Ahlawat 2-1 in the final to book her berth. In the 68 kg category Nisha Dahiya, was in action, but her return from injury (sustained during an Paris Olympics bout against Park Sol Gum) was cut short in the first round by Radhika, the eventual winner of the category Ankush won in the 50 kg category while Priya Malik overcame a stiff challenge from seasoned Kiran in the 76 kg category. The headliner of the day was Vaishnavi Patil of Maharashtra, who overcame years of falling short in the trials to achieve her first major breakthrough. The 65kg class, Vaishnavi first overcame Freedom Yadav in a bout where she trailed 0-4 but went on to win 10-6. She then defeated Haryana's Muskan 7-2 to seal her ticket. 'I am processing it right now. I have been constantly coming for trials, but I always miss out on the final berth. This feels like all of my hard work is finally paying off. However, this is just the start, and I have to win many more such matches,' Vaishnavi, who was ecstatic and almost breathless due to all the photo-op after her win, told the Indian Express on the sidelines. The selected Indian wrestlers will participate at the World Championships scheduled from 13th to 21st September in Zagreb, Croatia. The grapplers will be part of a camp organized 15 days ahead of the tournemant in Croatia, Wrestling Federation of India President Sanjay Singh confirmed. 50 kg: Ankush, 53 kg: Antim, 55 kg: Nishu, 57 kg: Tapasya, 59 kg: Neha, 62 kg: Manisha Bhanwala, 65 kg: Vaishnavi Patil, 68 kg: Radhika, 72 kg: Jyoti Berwal, 76 kg: Priya Malik
