Conn. home built by a Revolutionary War soldier asks $5.49M

New York Post30-04-2025
A historic Federal-style home, built by an American Revolutionary War soldier, is on the market for $5.49 million.
It's at 142 Main St. in a part of Fairfield, Conn. called Southport. The tony area has been a low-key favorite for privacy-loving public figures including Marlo Thomas and her late husband Phil Donahue; the late executive Jack Welch; and Daytime Emmy Award-winning soap star Jensen Ackles, brokers said.
More recently, celebrity chef Ina Garten sold her home nearby, at 219 Main St., for $1.36 million, according to reports.
11 The historic home was built in 1811.

The sellers of this seven-figure residence are orthopedic surgeon Dr. Bob Stanton, who worked with the US Ski Team for 30 years, and his wife Mandy.
The Stantons bought the residence for $1 million in 2016. Extensive renovations by builder Paul Tallman, architect Jack Franzen and interiors firm Parker & Company Designs followed.

The residence is named the Eleazar Bulkley House after the first owner, who also built it.
An American Revolutionary War soldier, Bulkley bought a fleet of vessels after the conflict and, as captain of his fleet, docked them in Southport Harbor.
Along with his five sons, Bulkley started E. Bulkley & Sons, which was known for shipping Southport onions.

Built in 1811, the four-bedroom, 4½-bathroom home is 3,603 square feet and sits on 0.67 acres.
Original features include re-milled, 200-year-old pine floors and chestnut beams, while the home also incorporates modern elements such as a floating staircase made, in part, with structural steel.
Additional details include a chef's kitchen and six fireplaces: four gas and two woodburning.
11 This elegant and cozy room comes with one of the home's six fireplaces.

Ocean's 14: Conclave Director Reveals Why He Turned Down Star-Studded Sequel

Nearly a year after it was reported that Conclave director Edward Berger was in talks to helm , Berger has now confirmed that he had already turned down the star-studded project. This comes after it was recently revealed that the acclaimed filmmaker was one of Amazon MGM Studios' frontrunners to direct the next James Bond movie before Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve landed the project. Why Conclave director Edward Berger turned down Ocean's 14? During a recent interview with Deadline, Berger explained the reason why he decided to turn down the opportunity to direct Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Matt Damon in Ocean's 14. The All Quiet on the Western Front director admitted that he was initially tempted to accept the high-profile project due to the perks that come with directing a star-studded movie for a big studio. 'We were talking at that time, Brad and I, and yes, was I seduced by the thought of making something like that. I'm from a small place in Germany. I've never had those opportunities,' Berger shared. 'And suddenly Brad Pitt and George Clooney and Julia Roberts and Matt Damon, I would be able to make a movie with them. Ballad of A Small Player was a hard movie to make, and I felt like, wouldn't it be great to make a studio picture? The studio needs that movie, the stars want the movie, as does the audience. Everyone needs the movie. It's a franchise. I can pay my crew. I can have fun with them. It's a temptation.' However, Berger realized that it would've been difficult to make Ocean's 14 as his own, because he doesn't know if he can add something new to the incredible franchise that Steven Soderbergh had built. He also revealed that he called Pitt to inform the Oscar-winning actor that he wasn't the right guy to helm the movie. 'Deep down inside, I knew it's not my movie, it's Steven Soderbergh's movie. He invented that, beautifully. He made them, and I'm just following in his footsteps. What is new for me?' He continued, 'I love those movies, but in essence, I don't know what to add to what the great Steven Soderbergh did.' He added, 'And so in the end, I had to sleep eight hours. And I think maybe when I met you, I'd slept a week. But during the shooting of Ballad, it was tempting because I was so tired. And then I wrapped, I went to bed, slept eight hours, and realized, it's not me. I called Brad because we had talked a bunch of times. I knew he was open to doing something, and I basically said, I'm sorry, I don't want to do Ocean's and hope I haven't offended you.' In the early 2000s, Steven Soderbergh directed the remake of Ocean's Eleven, which also featured a star-studded ensemble led by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon. Due to its box-office success, it was followed by three more installments, including the spin-off Ocean's 8, which featured Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, the sister of Clooney's Danny Ocean. The franchise currently has a combined worldwide gross of over $1 billion at the box office. Al Jardine rips Beach Boys bandmate Mike Love's speech at Brian Wilson's funeral

Al Jardine didn't sense good vibrations from Mike Love. The Beach Boys co-founder revealed that he wasn't impressed by his bandmate's speech at Brian Wilson's funeral on Aug. 6. According to Rolling Stone, Beach Boys biographer David Leaf and Jason Fine, an editor for the outlet, gave formal eulogies at Wilson's funeral after he died at age 82 in June. 10 Beach Boys members Brian Wilson, David Marks, Bruce Johnston, Al Jardine and Mike Love appear together in 2006. 'Mike wanted everybody to know that he wrote every single word of 'Good Vibrations,'' Jardine explained about Love's post-funeral tribute, while referencing their 1967 hit track. 'I didn't feel the compassion, let's put it that way. Mike's got some serious megalomania problems.' 'Mike, I've written some songs with Brian myself. We wrote one called 'Surfin' Down the Swanee River.' It just wasn't as big as 'Good Vibrations,'' the artist said at the beginning of his own speech. 10 Brian Wilson poses for a portrait at his home in Los Angeles on Monday, July 28, 2008. AP 'I was focusing on Brian, and Mike was more focused on Mike,' Jardine added. 'I think that is what it boiled down to.' However, a representative for Love told Rolling Stone, 'That's not true.' 'Mike's focus has always been on uplifting audiences around the world through the music he helped create with his bandmates and cousin Brian,' they stated. 'His commitment has been to preserve and share this great American songbook while providing resources to fellow Beach Boys shareholders, including Al Jardine.' 10 Brian Wilson and Mike Love of The Beach Boys perform onstage at the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards in 2012. The Post also reached out to Love's rep for comment, but did not immediately hear back. Wilson founded the Beach Boys in 1961 with his brothers, Dennis and Carl. 'Today, the world lost a genius, and I lost a cousin by blood and my partner in music,' he began. 'Brian Wilson wasn't just the heart of The Beach Boys—he was the soul of our sound. From the first time we sang together as kids in my living room, I knew there was something otherworldly in him. His musical gifts were unmatched.' 10 Dennis Wilson, Al Jardine, Middle: Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, Bottom: Carl Wilson, Brian Wilson. Redferns Love added, 'Our journey together was filled with moments of brilliance, heartbreak, laughter, complexity and most of all, LOVE . Like all families, we had our ups and downs. But through it all, we never stopped loving each other, and I never stopped being in awe of what he could do when he sat at a piano or his spontaneity in the studio.' Wilson's family announced the news of his passing on June 11. 'We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away,' they said on Instagram at the time. 'We are at a loss for words right now.' 'Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving,' their statement continued. 'We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world.' 10 The Beach Boys circa 1964. The message signed off with the phrase 'Love & Mercy,' which was the title of the opening track from Wilson's debut solo album in 1988. It was also the name of the 2014 biopic, which saw Wilson portrayed by both John Cusack and Paul Dano at different stages of his life. Following his death, Wilson's former entertainment lawyer, John Mason, spoke about the late star's mental health. 'Brian was in a weak mental state,' he told Fox News Digital earlier this month. 10 Dr. Eugene Landy and Brian Wilson. Mark Sullivan Mason explained, 'Brian often said to me, as sad as it sounds … 'I fried my brain. I took too many drugs.' Brian couldn't get up in the morning without somebody getting him up. He couldn't eat healthily without somebody giving him something healthy to eat.' Soon after, Wilson turned to a doctor for help. 'So, the good and bad of Dr. Eugene Landy in Brian's life was that he motivated Brian to become a participant in his own life,' the attorney shared. 'But the bad part was that, as time went by and years went by, Dr. Landy expected more and more to replace Brian in the Beach Boys… Brian wasn't allowed to do anything without a Landy handler being with him.' By 1984, Mason was hired as Wilson's attorney. 10 The Beach Boys after being inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. AP 'I was asked . . . if I would be Brian's lawyer, and I agreed,' he told the outlet. 'At that time, Brian was, I think, doing better, but he had a lot of issues. . . . Brian came to my office at least once a week. We started having Beach Boys meetings at my office once a month, and we all insisted that Brian come to those meetings without Landy,' he said. 'Brian was my client. . . . [But] Brian did check in with Landy after our meetings, after our phone calls. Too often I would get a call back from Brian saying, 'I know I said that, but I have to change my mind.''
