Anwar: I am not a dictator

PENAMPANG: While stressing the need for an all-out war against corruption, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has made it clear that he is not a dictator.
He said that any prosecution related to alleged corruption can only be carried out based on evidence and in accordance with procedures, and not on arbitrary instructions.
"I am not a dictator who orders immediate arrests.
"I do not want to be a prime minister who says 'Oh, we must arrest' or 'we must prosecute'.
"The fact is, the fight against corruption must be conducted at all levels," he said during the launch of the Sabah-level Kaamatan Festival celebration at Hongkod Koisaan Hall here today.
Present was Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
Anwar said while he holds the responsibility of maintaining peace and upholding the rule of law, that does not mean he would resort to prosecution without thorough investigation and evidence.
He also addressed a viral video linking a federal minister and a state assemblyman to a mining prospect scandal, acknowledging public concern over the issue.
"I want to be transparent. What is the point of only saying things people want to hear?
"When the issue escalated, I raised the matter with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
"Some people question why I haven't intervened, suggesting I am attempting to cover up allegations of corruption.
"But we are not a country governed by perception. Matters like these cannot be handled based on rumours, accusations or slander," he said, adding that a comprehensive investigation is underway.
Anwar also urged leaders in Sabah and local communities to work closely with the federal government to safeguard national sovereignty, improve socio-economic development, and protect the rights and welfare of the people.

King: Always put unity first

KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has reminded leaders not to politicise sensitive issues that could fuel discord within the society and threaten the nation's stability. His Majesty stated that the existence of more political parties or factions within parties could lead to widening rifts among the people, resulting in escalating enmity among them. 'Use your wisdom before making any decisions. There is no greater gift to me than a united rakyat. 'I have mentioned before that there is a 'virus' that will strike our nation. 'Now, this virus has begun to spread and cannot be cured. I often speak of this so that we do not easily forget,' His Majesty said. Sultan Ibrahim was speaking during the royal address at the investiture ceremony for 2025 in conjunction with His Majesty's official birthday celebration at Istana Negara, reported Bernama. Present at the ceremony were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and Cabinet Ministers. His Majesty also called on all Malaysians to keep fostering unity as a gift to him. The King went on to express his appreciation for the Madani government and its civil servants, who have worked hard to manage the country's economy and development. Sultan Ibrahim said the success of last month's Asean Summit was proof of the nation's leadership's ability to strengthen regional and international cooperation. 'Although there are those who underestimate Malaysia's capabilities, with hard work and a spirit of cooperation, especially by civil servants, all challenges and obstacles have been successfully overcome,' said His Majesty. Sultan Ibrahim also reminded civil servants to provide excellent service and practise the second principle of the Rukun Negara, which is 'Loyalty to King and Country'. 'Loyalty does not mean worship, but honesty and trust in carrying out the duties and responsibilities given, and not betraying the country and the people's trust,' said His Majesty. The King stressed that civil servants must be free from the influence of political parties, be neutral, and always prioritise the interests of the country and the people. 'Government officials must ensure that every decision made is in accordance with the conditions and regulations set, not according to the dictates of politicians. 'Every expenditure must also be closely controlled and cannot be used as desired by ministers or MPs to fish for votes, to the point of causing the government's debt to increase,' said the King. Sultan Ibrahim also called on all enforcement agencies to carry out their duties with full integrity so that the people do not lose trust and continue to respect the uniform they wear.

Royal guidance strengthens govt leadership, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim describes the wise and just reign of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, as a lasting symbol of the greatness and unity of the country. 'The decrees by His Majesty have consistently served as a noble guide for the Madani government in formulating policies and carrying out its responsibilities, upholding the aspirations of the people and ensuring that the wellbeing of all segments of society is preserved and uplifted,' he said. The Prime Minister said this in a speech at the investiture ceremony where Sultan Ibrahim presented federal awards, stars and medals in conjunction with His Majesty's official birthday celebration at Istana Negara yesterday, reported Bernama. In congratulating Sultan Ibrahim on the occasion of His Majesty's official birthday, Anwar said he and all the Malaysian people prayed for His Majesty, Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, as well as the entire Royal Family, to be blessed with long-lasting health and to always be under the protection and blessings of Allah. The Prime Minister stressed that national unity is no longer an option, but rather a key requirement to ensure the continuity of the country's development. He said unity is the foundation of a country's development and is a catalyst for Malaysia's progress. 'Malaysia will only remain strong if we stand together united. 'Stability and national unity are the basic conditions for all progress. In a world that is rapidly changing and full of challenges, unity is not an option, it is a necessity,' he said. Anwar said the Federal Government, under the auspices and guidance of His Majesty, will continue to be committed to implementing a comprehensive reform agenda based on the Madani principles. Anwar also said Malaysia will remain steadfast in facing various global challenges and continue to play a role as the catalyst and leader of regional diplomacy through its Asean 2025 chairmanship. He said although the world is facing various challenges, including geopolitical tensions and trade tariffs, Malaysia remains firmly anchored. 'Malaysia is among the earliest countries to act in protecting the interests of industry and businesses and the welfare of the people. 'Comprehensive and inclusive strategic measures have been taken, with the involvement of various parties to ensure the country remains economically stable and competitive,' he said. The Prime Minister also described this year's Asean Summit as the best in the history of Asean, when Malaysia as chairman brought together three giants – namely the Gulf States or Gulf Cooperation Council, China and Asean – to ensure the survival of civilisation while spurring the economy of the people and country.

More tamu desa to be built in Sabah, Sarawak this year

KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) will construct more 'tamu desa' (rural traditional markets) in Sabah and Sarawak this year, to enhance rural market facilities and empower entrepreneurs in both states. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the MADANI Government, through KUSKOP, had allocated RM20 million to implement the Tamu Desa Development Project this year. He added that this included an additional RM10 million announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the MADANI Rakyat Programme in Tawau last month. 'Last year, we successfully built and upgraded 98 tamu desa across Sabah and Sarawak. This year, with an allocation of RM20 million, I hope the same number or more can be built,' he said in a statement today. He was speaking after officiating the Kampung Pinasang Tamu Darat Kaamatan Festival in Kota Belud and subsequently launching the village's tamu desa, which was completed this year at a cost of RM250,000. Ewon said 14 tamu desa were built in the Kota Belud area, part of the 98 premises completed across Sabah and Sarawak last year. 'I have been informed by the village leaders that these premises greatly benefit the residents, especially mothers and small entrepreneurs who conduct business weekly. They not only provide a more comfortable space for selling but can also be used for various community activities on other days,' he said. According to him, the requirements for tamu desa development vary depending on the location and scope of work determined by the District Office, whether for new construction or upgrading, involving costs ranging from RM100,000 to RM300,000. As of May this year, he said, applications for new construction or upgrading of tamu desa premises in Sabah had reached RM40 million, including applications carried over from last year that could not be implemented, and this amount did not yet include applications from Sarawak 'Although our budget is limited, what is important is the continuity of what was implemented last year. What we started last year will be continued and expanded this year. I am confident that this programme will be among the key inputs of the ministry in the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030),' he said. The tamu desa initiative was also part of the government's commitment to pay special attention to the needs of rural Sabah and Sarawak, in line with the nation's inclusive development agenda, he added.
