Malaysia looks to China's Comac jets over Boeing and Airbus delays
Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia's Transport Minister Anthony Loke says Southeast Asia's growing air travel demand and delivery backlogs from Airbus and Boeing are sparking regional interest in China's Comac C919 jet. Chinese manufacturer Comac is positioning its C919, the country's first home-grown narrow body airliner, as a cheaper, faster alternative to Western-built aircraft. Loke confirmed that budget carrier AirAsia and new airline Air Borneo are amongst those exploring options with Comac. 'All airlines are looking for faster delivery and more affordable options. There's a long wait for Airbus and Boeing aircraft. Comac is definitely being considered," Loke told the South China Morning Post. RM60 million Tawau solar project ready next year

TAWAU: The QSolar Tawau large-scale solar project (LSS), to be built on an 18.21-hectare site in Jalan Timur here, is capable of strengthening Sabah's electricity grid capacity and addressing electricity supply problems in the State's east coast. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the solar farm development is expected to generate 15 megawatts (MW) of clean energy, thus stabilising the State's grid system, which is currently still dependent on diesel and natural gas-based power generation. 'This project will not only solve the electricity supply issue, especially on the East Coast, but also shape a cleaner, more stable and resilient energy future by project will balance the energy distribution between the west and east coasts of the State,' he said at the ground-breaking ceremony for the LSS Q-Solar Tawau project in Jalan Timur, here, Saturday. The text of the speech was read out by Assistant Minister to the Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan. Hajiji said the implementation of the project was in line with the State's Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan (SERAMP), which is the long-term roadmap for the transformation of Sabah's energy sector. The development of the LSS project, he said, would bring various economic benefits to the local community, including investment and job creation through various phases such as the construction and operation of solar farms. 'Local youths will also be given special training to manage and maintain this solar system, and this proves that this project is not temporary, but aims to build long-term local capacity,' he added. He expressed hope that the project could be completed according to schedule and have a positive impact on the people and the State. MoU to boost edible bird nest sector

KOTA KINABALU: The Beluran Area Farmers' Organisation (PPK Beluran) and Nestlin Malaysia Sdn Bhd have entered into a 10-year partnership for the supply and purchase of edible bird's nests, valued at over RM60 million. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the MoU involves the supply and purchase of both unprocessed and processed bird's nests. He added that the collaboration will position PPK Beluran as a main hub for the collection and processing of edible bird's nest in Sabah, while boosting the industry's growth in the state. 'The products will be exported to China, which highlights the industry's significant potential in Sabah,' he told reporters after witnessing the MoU exchange at the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day celebration here, Saturday. PPK Beluran was represented by its board chairman, Datuk James Ratib, who is also Sabah's Minister of Community Development and People's Wellbeing, while Nestlin Malaysia was represented by its chief executive officer, Datuk Sia Swee Seng. Meanwhile, Mohamad also witnessed another MoU exchange between the Farmers' Organisation Authority (LPP) and the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) for the development of pineapple cultivation in Sabah. The strategic five-year partnership involves technology transfers, technical support, and the expansion of participation among farmers and LPP members, with a total investment of RM500,000. LPP was represented by its director-general Amir Matamin, while LPNM was represented by its director-general Mohd Khairuzamri M Salleh. Mohamad said that aside from Johor, which is currently the leading pineapple producer in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak also have significant potential for large-scale commercial pineapple cultivation, not only to meet local demand but also for export purposes. He added that Sabah has kickstarted its pineapple cultivation on an area spanning 300 hectares in Sinua, Sook, via a collaboration between LPNM and the Sabah Land Development Board (SLDB), and has identified thousands of acres that could be utilised for pineapple cultivation. According to him, districts such as Kota Marudu, Beaufort, and other areas under SLDB's management have also shown promising prospects for commercial-scale cultivation. Tengku Zafrul: Boeing jet deal a strategic move, not a waste of public funds
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — Malaysia Aviation Group's (MAG) purchase of Boeing aircraft is not a waste of taxpayers' money as alleged by certain quarters but rather a strategic business decision that was planned in advance and will be fully financed using the company's funds, said Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister explained that the purchase decision had been announced as early as March this year, prior to United States (US) President Donald Trump's announcement of any new import tariff on goods. 'So what does this purchase have to do with tariff negotiations? 'The US imposed the tariffs partly due to the trade deficit. This means we sold more goods to the US than we bought from the country, so the US sought to reduce this deficit by imposing high tariffs of 25 per cent,' he said in a post on his official X social media account yesterday. Hence, Tengku Zafrul said, Malaysia took the opportunity by listing all big-ticket purchases planned by Malaysian companies from the US, including the Boeing aircraft order. 'We are not making the purchase just to reduce tariffs,' he stressed. According to him, this demonstrated to the US that Malaysia is also a major buyer of its products, thus finally convincing the US to lower import tariffs on Malaysian goods from 25 per cent to 19 per cent. 'This smart strategy is the result of careful negotiations, ensuring that the interests of both companies and the country are protected,' he added. In March this year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that MAG had placed a firm order for 30 Boeing 737 aircraft, scheduled for delivery by 2030. — Bernama
