Trade moves, inflation data, FII flows likely to drive markets this week

Stock markets will be driven by inflation data, trade-related news, earnings and trading activity of foreign investors in a holiday-shortened week, analysts said on Sunday.
Global market trends will also influence trading sentiment this week, they added.
Equity markets would remain closed on Friday for Independence Day.
"This week, attention will turn to domestic CPI and WPI inflation data. Developments in the USIndia trade relations will also remain in focus amid ongoing discussions over a trade agreement. The earnings season is nearing its end, with key results due from Ashok Leyland, ONGC, IOC, Hindalco Industries, BPCL and others, which could drive stock-specific action," Ajit Mishra SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, said.
Extending losing streak for the sixth consecutive week, the BSE benchmark dropped 742.12 points or 0.92 per cent, and the Nifty declined 202.05 points or 0.82 per cent.
"Key factors to watch this week are trade negotiations, macroeconomic data, earnings and FII flows," Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart, said.
Any updates or posturing from India and the US will remain a primary market driver, he said.
"India, the US, and China will release key numbers, with US inflation data (12th August) being especially crucial in the backdrop of higher tariffs. India's inflation numbers will also be released on the same day," Meena noted.
The Q1 earnings season is nearly over, but a few companies are yet to announce results, potentially triggering sector-specific moves, he said.
Foreign investors have pulled out nearly Rs 18,000 crore from Indian equities so far this month.
"Looking ahead, markets will enter the final leg of the Q1 earnings season, which is expected to drive stock-specific moves. Overall, we expect equities to remain in consolidation mode until there is clarity on the tariff front. In this volatile environment, investors may focus on domestic-oriented themes, while traders are advised to keep positions light," Siddhartha Khemka - Head Of Research, Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, said.

Paytm secures RBI nod for payment aggregator licence after AntFin's exit

Paytm Payments Services Limited (PPSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of One 97 Communications Limited, has received in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to operate as an online payment aggregator under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, the company said on Tuesday. "We would like to inform you that RBI has granted 'in-principle' authorisation to PPSL... to operate as an Online Payment Aggregator under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007," the company stated in a BSE filing. Background to the approval The RBI had last year rejected Paytm's application for a payment aggregator licence, citing non-compliance with foreign direct investment (FDI) norms, and directed the company to meet regulatory requirements before reapplying. The latest development comes after China's Ant Financial exited the company last week, selling its entire 5.84 per cent stake for around ₹3,803 crore, thereby reducing Chinese ownership in the company to zero. Regulatory history Last year, the company said it had received FDI approval from the Ministry of Finance and would resubmit its application for the payment aggregator licence. One 97 Communications has previously faced regulatory scrutiny. In January 2024, the RBI ordered Paytm Payments Bank to halt the onboarding of new customers, citing concerns over its compliance with banking regulations.

Hindalco Q1 profit rises 30% as Novelis outlook brightens for H2

The worst is behind for Novelis in several ways, said Satish Pai, managing director of Hindalco Industries. ADVERTISEMENT 'By the second half of this year, you should start to see a very positive turn to Novelis,' he said on Tuesday. Hindalco Industries, which reported its consolidated earnings on Tuesday, saw a 30% jump in its consolidated net profit for the June quarter at Rs 4,004 crore, with consolidated revenue from operations 13% higher at Rs 64,232 crore. Novelis, the wholly-owned US-based subsidiary of the company, reported a 36% fall in its net income for the June quarter at $96 million, while the adjusted EBITDA made on each tonne of aluminium stood at $432, down by 18% on-year. Structurally higher scrap prices negatively impacted performance during the quarter, Novelis said on Monday.'Scrap spreads have started to improve, most particularly in the US. So, we are now hoping, that will get better in the coming quarters,' Pai said on Tuesday. 'The supply of scrap in the US has also gone up, so scrap spreads are no more a headwind, but have started to become a tailwind,' he said on a call after the company's quarterly September and December quarters of the last fiscal were the peak in terms of scrap prices, he said, with prices now turning favourable. ADVERTISEMENT While the June quarter is the 'bottom' in many ways, the September quarter will be similar. 'By Q3, Q4 of this year, you are going to see a much stronger and healthier Novelis,' he said. Earnings in the second half of the year will reflect the impact of mitigation of the spreads, cost reduction programmes and the scrap spreads improving, Pai said. In the downstream aluminium business, EBITDA per tonne surged 92% on-year to $264, while EBITDA was at a record high of Rs 229 crore, up 108% on-year. ADVERTISEMENT In the copper business, EBITDA stood at Rs 673 crore, with the sharply declining TC/RCs offset by higher realisation from sulphuric acid, the company said in a statement. At a consolidated level, the company's EBITDA rose 9% on-year to Rs 8,673 reported its earnings during market hours and its shares closed at Rs 666.95 apiece on the BSE, down 0.7% from the previous close.
