Peacock, Taylor, Hayden? Your most underrated Newcastle players

BBC News4 days ago
We asked for your views on former Newcastle defender John Anderson's top five most underrated Magpies players of all time. Anderson's list was: 5. Andy Griffin4. Kevin Gallagher3. Shola Ameobi2. Sean Longstaff1. Aaron Hughes. Here are some of your thoughts:Darren: Darren Peacock played for Toon as a centre-back in the Kevin Keegan days and was often the only defender doing his job. The concept of 'rest defence' just was not a thing with the Keegan teams and poor Darren was frequently left cruelly exposed as Steve Watson, Rob Elliot and Philippe Albert would all go charging up field. But he did a stalwart job amid very unfair criticism from the usual Monday morning midfield generals.Stephen: Still annoys me that we let Aaron Hughes go for peanuts and replaced him with Jean-Alain Boumsong, who cost a fortune and was much worse.Peter: Can't argue with John Anderson's picks for the great under-appreciated but I would try to push Scott Sellars in there somewhere. Him, David Kelly, John Bracewell and Barry Venison set the foundations for King Kev's entertainersAndrew: If Shola Ameobi made the list, surely so should Steve Harper. A club legend, who all fans liked! But, how about a punt for Steven Taylor? At his peak, he was a starter for the team and super reliable. He also gave us an entire career. But he never got a chance to prove his talent for England, even when at his peak. Final shout out for Isaac Hayden. He was ultra reliable. Sad how it ended with him.Jamie: Ando is a legend so by and large I agree with his choices. But, James Milner deserves a mention. Went on to have an unbelievable career, still going, has won everything there is at club level and could have made so much difference to a very modest team for so many years.Paul: 1. Gaza 2. Beardsley 3. Waddle 4. Malcolm MacDonald 5. Andy Cole. The club underrated them all by letting them go. Fortunately, PIF have more sense!

Kelly: England's success should not mask racism suffered by Carter

The Lionesses stood in solidarity with Carter at the start of their semi-final tie against Italy as they decided not to take the knee at the whistle for the first time this tournament. It follows Carter speaking out about the racist abuse she has been subject to on social media while at the tournament as she took the decision to step back from running her accounts. 'It's disappointing to see that, sometimes, winning masks racism. It's really disappointing that sometimes it should mask that - it definitely shouldn't,' said Kelly. 'It needs to be a learning for everyone, that it has no place in our sport and no place in society too.' We stand with Jess, and all #Lionesses players past and present who have suffered racism. A message from the squad: — Lionesses (@Lionesses) July 20, 2025 Ahead of England's 2-1 extra-time victory over Italy in their Euro 2025 semi-final, their bench had stood with arms linked by the side of the pitch in solidarity with Carter. Chants for the defender also rang round the Stade de Geneve on 16 minutes, to represent Carter's number, as supporters showed their solidarity against the racism that remains prevalent in the game, particularly on social media. 'I'm so proud to stand side-by-side with the girls in this team, Jess Carter and every single player in this team,' added Kelly. 'It was a special moment for us and a powerful moment for us, to show that this is not what we accept, not in society, not in sport, and there needs to be more done to make sure this isn't happening over and over again.' On Sunday, Carter posted on her Instagram that she would leave social media after suffering racist abuse throughout the tournament. She wrote: 'From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racist abuse. 'Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don't agree or think it's okay to target someone's appearance or race. 'Hopefully speaking out will make the people writing this abuse think twice so that others won't have to deal with it.' The Lionesses, the FA, UEFA and FIFA all followed with statements in support of Carter, though the squad made the decision not to take the knee against Italy as they felt their message was not being listened to. While statements continue to be written, there remains a lack of structural action to tackle such issues, including in the policing of social media platforms where abuse remains widespread.

Italy players caught laughing at Chloe Kelly moments before England equaliser

Smirking Italy defender Boattin was left with egg on her face after being caught mocking Chloe Kelly moments before England's dramatic stoppage time equaliser. Still trailing to Barbara Bonansea's first half goal, the Lionesses appeared destined for an agonising exit when Kelly placed the ball in the corner quadrant with three minutes of injury time remaining. The England super-sub, who had earlier come close to scoring directly from a corner, miscued her attempted cross and it dribbled tamely into the side netting. At that moment, Italy's players and coaching staff must've thought their place in the final was assured. As the camera cut to the bench, some of the substitutes could hardly bring themselves to watch, but Boattin, an unused replacement, struggled to hide her amusement at Kelly's misfortune. England, and Kelly, would have the last laugh, however. With 60 seconds left on the clock Michelle Agyemang pounced on a loose ball to fire Sarina Wiegman's side level and spark riotous scenes. But the drama did not end there. As another penalty shootout loomed the award of a controversial penalty saw Kelly afforded the chance to win the contest from the spot. Although the Arsenal forward saw her effort saved, she remained alert enough to bury the rebound and booked her side's place in Sunday's showpiece. Kelly's long-time international teammate Lucy Bronze, meanwhile, insisted England had nothing to prove after another dramatic comeback. 'I think people from the outside think teams have to win every single game,' defender Bronze said. 'I think people talk about consistency with this England team, we've done six consecutive semi-finals, three consecutive finals, who else has done that? Nobody. 'You know, Spain and Germany are fantastic teams, even they haven't managed that feat. 'It's hard to stay at the top in international football, so many teams, they have performances, then it's up and down, they develop, but this team just keeps fighting until the end. 'I feel like we didn't have anything to prove because we've been there, we've done it many, many times. 'It's just the fact that the game's getting better, international football's not as easy as it used to be. Everybody's fighting and everyone wants to win and everyone feels like they can win.'
