Author Tom Robbins dies at 92
Robbins' death was announced by his wife, Alexa Robbins, on Facebook. The post did not cite a cause.
"He was surrounded by his family and loyal pets. Throughout these difficult last chapters, he was brave, funny and sweet," Alexa Robbins wrote. "He asked that people remember him by reading his books."
Robbins indulged the hippie sensibilities of young people starting in the early 1970s with books that had an overarching philosophy of what he called "serious playfulness" and a mandate that it should be pursued in the most outlandish ways possible.
As he wrote in "Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas," "Minds were made for blowing."
Robbins' works included "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues", "Another Roadside Attraction" and "Still Life With Woodpecker."
Robbins' characters were over the top, off the wall and around the bend. Among them were Sissy Hankshaw, the hitchhiker with the 9-inch thumbs in "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues," and Switters, the pacifist CIA operative in love with a nun in "Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates." "Skinny Legs and All" featured a talking can of pork and beans, a dirty sock and Turn Around Norman, a performance artist whose act consisted of moving imperceptibly.
"What I try to do, among other things, is to mix fantasy and spirituality, sexuality, humor and poetry in combinations that have never quite been seen before in literature," Robbins said in an interview with January magazine in 2000. "And I guess when a reader finishes one of my books ... I would like for him or her to be in the state that they would be in after a Fellini film or a Grateful Dead concert."
He was born in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and grew up there and in Richmond, Virginia, in a family that he once described as "kind of a Southern Baptist version of 'The Simpsons.'" Robbins said he was dictating stories to his mother at age 5 and developed his writing skills further at Washington and Lee University in Virginia working on the school newspaper with Tom Wolfe, who would go on to write "The Right Stuff" and "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test."

Council plans to introduce new 20mph limits on host of roads
New 20mph speed limits are being introduced in parts of Southampton city centre. The Labour-run city council is bringing in the slower speed restriction in six roads, two years after it carried out a consultation on a much wider scheme. An opposition councillor has accused the administration of ignoring city centre residents who wanted 20mph limits on the streets where they live. The local authority's lead member for transport said the six roads had been selected for a 20mph zone after 'careful consideration', with no long-term decisions made on other routes. Southampton City Council has issued a public notice confirming the change in speed limit for Albion Place, Albion Place Bus Hub, Bargate Street, Castle Way, Castle Way Service Road and East Park Terrace. The move is due to come into operation on October 13, with proposals relating to other roads named in a 2023 traffic regulation order (TRO) not being progressed at this time. A statement of reasons published as part of a consultation two years ago said the council had committed funding to implement 20mph limits in residential areas of the city where feasible and where there was community support. Conservative group spokesman for transport Cllr Jeremy Moulton said: '20mph limits were originally envisaged for residential roads and there was considerable interest from city centre residents. 'Labour have ignored all of these people and are instead now only progressing 20mph limits on main roads and bus routes, in direct contradiction to the original aims of the policy. 'Labour always seem to ignore what local people want.' Cllr Christie Lambert, cabinet member for transport, said: 'These roads have been selected after careful consideration and with a great deal of research undertaken. 'A 20mph limit will help to reduce the risk and severity of collisions and encourages more walking and cycling across the city. This will help people, especially children, older people, and people with mobility issues to cross the roads more safely. 'No long-term decisions have been made regarding other roads that were previously listed in TROs.'

NZ central bank cuts rates to 3-year low, flags more easing; kiwi $ tumbles
By Lucy Craymer WELLINGTON (Reuters) -New Zealand's central bank cut its policy rate by 25 basis points to a three-year low of 3.00% on Wednesday, and flagged further reductions in coming months as policymakers warned of domestic and global headwinds to growth. The New Zealand dollar fell as much as 0.8% to $0.5845, while two year swap rates slumped as deep as 2.96% -- their lowest level since early 2022 -- as the decidedly dovish stance caught markets off guard. The cut in the official cash rate by a quarter point was in line with a Reuters poll in which all but two of the 30 economists surveyed correctly forecast the RBNZ's decision, after the bank held policy steady in July. The central bank has slashed rates by 250 basis points since August 2024 to underpin a fragile recovery, taking advantage of expectations inflation will return to 2% next year and to buffer the economy from a broad shakeup in U.S. tariff policy. 'There are upside and downside risks to the economic outlook. Cautious behaviour by households and businesses could further dampen economic growth. Alternatively, the economic recovery could accelerate as the full effects of interest rate reductions flow through the economy,' the RBNZ said in its accompanying policy statement. The central bank forecast in its Monetary Policy Statement that the cash rate will be at 2.71% in the fourth quarter of 2025, below a forecast of 2.92% in May. In the first-quarter of 2026 it expects it to average 2.55%, lower than the previously forecast 2.85%. "If medium-term inflation pressures continue to ease as expected, there is scope to lower the OCR further," the statement added.A global front-runner in withdrawing pandemic-era stimulus, the RBNZ lifted rates 525 basis points between October 2021 and September 2023 to curb inflation in the most aggressive tightening since the official cash rate was introduced in 1999. The punishing borrowing costs, however, took a heavy toll on demand and tipped the economy into recession last year. While, the South Pacific nation has emerged from the slump, growth remains weak and is being further hampered by a slowdown in the global economy and the government's tight fiscal policy. Adding to the domestic economic stress, unemployment is also rising. New Zealand's annual inflation remains within the RBNZ's 1%-3% target band at 2.7% and the central bank is forecasting it will increase to 3.0% in the third quarter. Baldwin's 2-run single in 8th caps 6-run comeback as Braves rally past White Sox 11-10
ATLANTA (AP) — Drake Baldwin hit a two-run single with two outs in the eighth inning and the Atlanta Braves rallied from a six-run deficit to defeat the Chicago White Sox 11-10 on Tuesday night. Michael Harris II and Jurickson Profar each hit a two-run homer. Ozzie Albies went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Matt Olson had four hits for the Braves, who trailed 10-4 in the seventh. Raisel Iglesias pitched a perfect ninth for his 20th save. Harris made a sliding catch in center field for the final out. Atlanta starter Bryce Elder gave up eight runs in 4 2/3 innings.
