Africans Try Each Other's Fufu And Stew

Africans Try Each Other's Fufu And Stew

Buzz Feed14-04-2025

Another popular African dish, Fufu and stew, is up for this week's taste test!
Odi (Nigeria), Shahd (Sudan), Emil (Cameroon), and Diana (Nigeria) were brave (and curious) enough to see which of their Fufu and stews are the best.
Everyone involved will rate each dish on a scale of 1-10. The person with the highest combined score wins ~all~ the bragging rights.
First up is Shahd from Sudan. She's energetic and ready for folks to eat her food.
She's made Egusi and Fufu with an East African twist. There's onion, stock, blended pepper, and her choice of meat. Shahd mashed that fufu from scratch and leaned into Sudanese recipes to create her masterpiece.

We wonder what the other panelists think of it...

BuzzFeed
The Nigerians liked Shahd's egusi so much they thought it was theirs! Definitely a compliment!
BuzzFeed
Shahd and her spicy egusi walk away with a score of 21!
BuzzFeed
Next up we have Emil from Cameroon! He's made peanut stew with plantain fufu.
There's some good seasoning in there as well as some smoked meat. The plantain isn't as...smooth as it needs to be, though.
BuzzFeed
Let's see how the gang feels about his home cooked meal!
BuzzFeed
The peanut sauce was hitting, especially with the plantain fufu...as coarse as it was...
BuzzFeed
As expected, no one was really feeling the half pounded plantain fufu. Folks were saying it needed more water. Next time, Emil!
BuzzFeed
He walks away with a combined score of 8. Yikes.
We've entered the halfway point of the competition and the Nigerians are here to win. Diana is up next with her classic Egusi and fufu plate.
BuzzFeed
Diana has been making egusi and fufu since she was a kid. Quite honestly, it shows. Look at that Fufu—smoother than skin. Babygirl kept it simple with peppers, onions, and palm oil. Looks tasty.
Diana had the right amount of everything, although Odi thought it could be more palm oil. To each their own! Diana walks away with a score of 24.
Last, but surely not least we have Odi from Nigeria. He's also made traditional Nigerian egusi stew and fufu for everyone to try and rate.
Odi's choice of ingredients are grounded pumpkin seeds, onion, red pepper, and most importantly: PALM OIL.
BuzzFeed
The people looved his dish. The fufu was smooth, although Diana thought it was a little oily..
BuzzFeed
Odi walks away with an 18.5! A solid score.
But there's a SURPRISE! Joyce comes through and becomes the final taste test and vote! She thought Obi's dish was a little too salty, so who won??
BuzzFeed
BuzzFeed
Diana with a solid 32 points!! Shout out to Nigeria and good food. Until next time, foodies!

Orlando Bloom At Breaking Point With Katy Perry: Report

Earlier this week, reports surfaced about the apparent state of Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom's relationship. The couple, who have been engaged since 2019 and share a 4-year-old daughter named Daisy, are apparently under a lot of 'tension' and 'stress' following the negative reception to Katy's latest album, 143, and 'Lifetimes' tour. An insider purportedly told People magazine that the negative press around Katy's projects impacted her and Orlando's relationship. 'Katy was deeply frustrated following the reception of her new album,' they claimed. 'It made her very stressed. Orlando was understanding, but it did cause some tension.' Now, an insider has claimed to Entertainment Tonight that Orlando is at his 'breaking point.' The source alleged that Katy and Orlando 'haven't been great for a few months,' again claiming that this is because of the negative response to her album and the divisive space trip. 'Orlando has been trying to be supportive because he knows how hard things can be when balancing everything, especially when kids are involved. But Katy's demeanor has become increasingly frustrating for him,' the insider claimed. The source added that Katy is apparently 'very focused' on her and Orlando's daughter during this time. BuzzFeed has reached out to Katy and Orlando's reps for comment, and we'll keep you posted if anything else unfolds.

Music reviews: Tune-Yards and PinkPantheress

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. ★★★ Though Tune-Yards' sixth album probably won't top any sales charts, "it will definitely make you get up and dance," said Attila Peter in The Line of Best Fit. Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner, partners in both music and life, "have always been adventurous and uncompromising, showing an eclecticism that draws from African, folk, electronic, rap, and even classical music." But the result is always a form of pop, easy on the ears even when Garbus is singing, as she does here, about all that's happening in the world that infuriates her. "Full of pulsating beats and hypnotic grooves," this latest album is "bursting with an energy and joy that is impossible to resist." If there's a complaint to be made here, it's that the music "backgrounds the songs' meanings," said Andy Crump in Paste. But "there are worse problems for an album to have," especially when "the music is so catchy that repeat plays are practically inevitable." Eventually, you will realize that Garbus is venting her anger about America's current turn toward corrupt authoritarianism. At that point, it may also strike you that Better Dreaming is one of this band's "all-time great records." ★★★ Four years ago, PinkPantheress's music "felt like a future of pop," said Jem Aswad in Variety. The young British singer-songwriter-producer crafted fleet "microsongs" that packed verses, a chorus, and a bridge into 90 seconds, making them immensely TikTok friendly. Thankfully, her new eight-song mixtape avoids the more conventional sound of 2023's Heaven Knows and recaptures her strengths: "tight hooks, fast tempos, skittering beats, percolating bass," plus "her inimitable, breathy vocals." The songs "blaze by in less than 20 minutes," but "pack a velvet-gloved punch." The music doesn't sound like the future, said Harry Tafoya in Pitchfork. Instead, "Fancy That is a portal into an alternate universe where U.K. garage successfully crossed the Atlantic and fashion froze in 2006." It opens with "Illegal," a song that, like many of this 24-year-old artist's best, is "musically busy" and "charmingly conversational." Nothing that follows slips into the "daydreaming detours" of her 2023 release. PinkPantheress "has never been more ready to dance," making Fancy That her "most exciting and fully realized release yet."

Adorable lion cubs exploring West Midland Safari Park in heartwarming photos

Charming photos reveal a trio of delightful lion cubs playfully discovering their new enclosure under the vigilant eye of mum, following their birth at a UK safari park. West Midlands Safari Park keepers are rejoicing over the arrival of three African lions, born to 12 year old Amber on April 13. Now just over eight weeks old, the youngsters have had their first health check, confirming they are two boys and a girl. Read more: New restaurant people travel for hours to eat at They've since been named Nero, Nox and Nancy - in line with the park's theme of naming every newborn this year starting with the letter N. The births are being celebrated as a 'significant' step towards the survival of the species, as lions are categorised as 'vulnerable' in the wild by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Senior carnivore keeper, Shauna Jenkins, said, "Amber has been a fantastic mother after giving birth to her three cubs. "We keepers try to be as hands-off as we can with animal births, so we initially monitored the cubs via CCTV to minimise the disturbance. "It has been exciting to watch them reach crucial milestones in their development under Amber's devoted care. "As they've grown bigger and more active, the cubs have become increasingly playful, often seen using Amber as their climbing frame or her tail like a toy - particularly when she's lying down to eat. "Their unique personalities are beginning to emerge and we're all eager to watch them to continue to grow and develop." The zoo's lion cubs are gearing up for their first taste of the great outdoors, with keepers preparing to give them access to an outdoor area adjacent to the lion house. Before they can embrace the wilds of their enclosure, the cubs will require a second round of jabs and another health check, much like domestic kittens do before venturing outside. Shauna shared: "The female, Nancy, is already showing a strong independent streak, with her brothers often following her lead as they explore their environment and investigate new sights and smells. "Amber is very relaxed with her cubs exploring, with keepers in the vicinity carrying out their routine husbandry tasks - a true reflection of the trust and bond she shares with the team." With the latest 2023 figures estimating that there are only between 22,000 and 25,000 adult and subadult lions remaining in Africa, the survival of these majestic creatures is becoming increasingly precarious. Katie McDonald, research and conservation officer, commented: "We are all so familiar with lions - they are the iconic animals of children's stories and have been seen in zoos for centuries. "It is hard to imagine that they could become extinct. "It is believed lions exist in only about 6 per cent of their historic range, demonstrating severe declines. This is due to lions losing habitat and prey animals to humans. "As the human population in lion range areas increases, human-lion conflict is becoming more and more of a problem for both people and the cats." West Midland Safari Park is home to a new litter of lion cubs, supporting conservation efforts in Africa. A spokesperson said: "There are specific regional conservation strategies in place to save lions on the ground in Africa. "Having lions at the Safari Park allows us to keep their story very much alive." The cubs are the latest additions to the animal attraction, which has recently welcomed three Sumatran tiger cubs, an Indian rhino calf, two blesbok calves, and a barasingha fawn.
