NGT takes cognisance of illegal beach buildings on Tamil Nadu's Karikattukuppam beach

CHENNAI: The Southern Bench of National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken suo motu cognisance of illegal building constructions violating Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules at Old Karikattukuppam beach in Chengalpattu. The tribunal issued notices to departments concerned, seeking an action taken report by June 17.
Based on a report by TNIE, the bench, comprising judicial member Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and expert member K Satyagopal, sharply criticised the Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority (TNSCZMA) for failing to exercise its authority under the CRZ Notification and Environment Protection Act to curb these unauthorised constructions.
Justice Sathyanarayana noted the NGT's Western Bench had ordered demolitions in a similar case. Satyagopal pointed out that the coastal management authority's current member secretary, AR Rahul Nadh, had previously served as Chengalpattu collector, where CRZ violations have persisted for years without meaningful action.
In April, TNIE reported how land sharks were encroaching upon Chengalpattu's beaches, prompting the Mamallapuram Local Planning Authority to issue notices confirming CRZ violations. These notices mandated restoration of the site to its original state through demolition or alteration within 15 days of receipt. Non-compliance would lead to authorities undertaking demolition, with costs recovered from property owners, and the premises could be locked and sealed. The notices also required halting the use of the buildings within the same period.

Karnataka govt, cops could have opted for planned celebration

BENGALURU: With 11 RCB fans dead and 64 injured in Wednesday's stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium, informed sources told TNIE on condition of anonymity that Bengaluru City Police (BCP) was literally hijacked by the premier cricketing club and people 'at the helm of affairs' in the state. The BCP has come under tremendous flak for the shoddy and unprofessional handling of the crowd that converged outside the stadium, and the stampede that followed and led to 11 casualties -- all young people in the prime of their lives, including two minors. An extremely tragic and unprecedented event could have been averted if the government and police had exercised caution and planned the celebration later, in consultation and coordination with all agencies and stakeholders concerned, and after the public frenzy had come down. 'Where was the question of permission for the stadium event? RCB had already announced the victory celebration on social media early Wednesday morning, and followed it up with more posts. People were all charged up and the government was keen on the event, in keeping with public sentiment. They simply failed to anticipate the impending catastrophe, despite cautionary advice,' the sources added. 'A senior police officer cautioned those at the helm of affairs on Wednesday after RCB, from their handle @RCBTweets at 7:01am posted on microblogging platform 'X', announcing a victory parade in Bengaluru. He suggested a delayed and better planned event on Sunday but it was overlooked. Police then refused permission for the open bus victory parade but allowed the stadium event under pressure. They should have asserted and put their foot down,' said placed sources. Narrating the buildup of events -- from RCB's post on X early on Wednesday on the Bengaluru celebrations, to the meeting with political leadership to discuss the planning of the event, to the stampede -- sources said, without naming anybody, that the government 'failed to gauge the previous evening's frenzy in the city after RCB won IPL 2025'. Why did the police, caught between RCB and their political bosses, throw their hands up? Routine BCP posts on social media with a mandatory advisory and travel restrictions in the city were starkly missing on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Stalin announces full support for tribal girl's education after JEE Advanced success

CHENNAI: Congratulating A Rajeshwari, a Malayali tribal girl from Karumandurai, a village in the Kalvarayan Hills, who secured an all-India rank of 417 under the Scheduled Tribe category in JEE Advanced, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday announced that the state will bear the entire expenses for her higher studies. TNIE was the first to report the story The CM, in a post on his X handle, said, 'I salute Rajeshwari, a student of the government residential school, for realising her father's dream even after his death. More girls like Rajeshwari joining the IIT will be a real source of pride for the institution. The DMK government will continue to work towards that.' The state has been taking care of education expenses of government school students joining premier institutions like IITs since 2003. The government has also allocated Rs 50 crore for the Kalloori Kanavu scheme in this year's budget to send 2,000 government school students from TN to premier institutions. With the closing ST rank of the last tribal girl student to get admitted to IIT-Madras in 2024 being 1,691, officials are confident that Rajeshwari will certainly get an IIT seat. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami and DMDK and AMMK leaders congratulated Rajeshwari on her achievement.

Parents cry foul as government-aided schools collect exorbitant fees in Tamil Nadu

MADURAI: Scores of parents have alleged that several government-aided schools are collecting exorbitant fees from students and not giving receipts for the same. As per norms, both government and government-aided schools must not collect fees from students of classes 1 to 5. However, high schools and higher secondary schools are allowed to collect Rs 50 for the Parent Teachers Association, and Rs 20 for flag day. After speaking to many parents and HMs, TNIE found out that aided schools collect Rs 1,000 - Rs 35,000 as fee for Classes 6-12. V Ragupathi, who enrolled his son in Computer-Maths group for Class 11 in an aided English medium school, said he was asked to pay Rs 35,000 as fees including books and was not given receipt even though he asked for one. However, they just mentioned in the application that the fees were paid. M Seethalakshmi, another parent, said her two daughters were studying in a minority government-aided Tamil medium school and she was asked to pay Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000 when they were studying in Classes 6-Rs 10. She had to pay Rs 6,000 for Class 11 and 12 and no receipts were given. Requesting anonymity, the HM of an aided school said they collect fees only from English-medium students.
