NGT takes cognisance of illegal beach buildings on Tamil Nadu's Karikattukuppam beach
CHENNAI: The Southern Bench of National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken suo motu cognisance of illegal building constructions violating Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules at Old Karikattukuppam beach in Chengalpattu. The tribunal issued notices to departments concerned, seeking an action taken report by June 17.
Based on a report by TNIE, the bench, comprising judicial member Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and expert member K Satyagopal, sharply criticised the Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority (TNSCZMA) for failing to exercise its authority under the CRZ Notification and Environment Protection Act to curb these unauthorised constructions.
Justice Sathyanarayana noted the NGT's Western Bench had ordered demolitions in a similar case. Satyagopal pointed out that the coastal management authority's current member secretary, AR Rahul Nadh, had previously served as Chengalpattu collector, where CRZ violations have persisted for years without meaningful action.
In April, TNIE reported how land sharks were encroaching upon Chengalpattu's beaches, prompting the Mamallapuram Local Planning Authority to issue notices confirming CRZ violations. These notices mandated restoration of the site to its original state through demolition or alteration within 15 days of receipt. Non-compliance would lead to authorities undertaking demolition, with costs recovered from property owners, and the premises could be locked and sealed. The notices also required halting the use of the buildings within the same period.

He suggested a delayed and better planned event on Sunday but it was overlooked. Police then refused permission for the open bus victory parade but allowed the stadium event under pressure. They should have asserted and put their foot down,' said placed sources. With the closing ST rank of the last tribal girl student to get admitted to IIT-Madras in 2024 being 1,691, officials are confident that Rajeshwari will certainly get an IIT seat. Parents cry foul as government-aided schools collect exorbitant fees in Tamil Nadu
MADURAI: Scores of parents have alleged that several government-aided schools are collecting exorbitant fees from students and not giving receipts for the same. As per norms, both government and government-aided schools must not collect fees from students of classes 1 to 5. However, high schools and higher secondary schools are allowed to collect Rs 50 for the Parent Teachers Association, and Rs 20 for flag day. After speaking to many parents and HMs, TNIE found out that aided schools collect Rs 1,000 - Rs 35,000 as fee for Classes 6-12. V Ragupathi, who enrolled his son in Computer-Maths group for Class 11 in an aided English medium school, said he was asked to pay Rs 35,000 as fees including books and was not given receipt even though he asked for one. However, they just mentioned in the application that the fees were paid. M Seethalakshmi, another parent, said her two daughters were studying in a minority government-aided Tamil medium school and she was asked to pay Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000 when they were studying in Classes 6-Rs 10. She had to pay Rs 6,000 for Class 11 and 12 and no receipts were given. Requesting anonymity, the HM of an aided school said they collect fees only from English-medium students.
