Teko Modise on life after football and turning his passion for fashion into profit
Modise retired in 2019. Since then, he has been more visible in the fashion fraternity, pushing the envelope.
He shares that he has loved fashion even during his football days, but at the time, he wanted to be known only for football.
Few would have guessed that former football star Teko Modise would turn to fashion after hanging up his boots in 2019. But today, he stands out as one of South Africa's leading male-style figures, pushing boundaries with every look.
Speaking to City Press at the Johnnie Walker Blue Polo, which was held at the Inanda Club in Sandton on Sunday, the former Orlando Pirates midfielder said he had always had an eye for fashion. However, when he still played football, he wanted to be known solely for that, he explained.
Once his focus shifted from being on the field, he began paying more attention to his love for fashion.

Modise said he had become more expressive and enjoyed life more since he retired, adding that he wanted that to be exuded through fashion.
Stylish and elegant, Modise wore a light blue tailored suit that proved to be a more fashion-forward choice than the typical tuxedo.
'Maybe it's because now, I have so much time, and I am able to take pictures as well,' he said, adding:
I have always been drawn to fashion, but I have always wanted to be known as a footballer. My close friends are not surprised about where I am, because they know that I have always been that person. Now I have rediscovered myself. I am kinder to myself. I love myself a little bit more, and I appreciate a lot of things about myself a little bit more.
Having been dressed by fashion designers Mmuso Potsane and Maxwell Boko, who co-own a fashion house called MmusoMaxwell for this particular event, Modise candidly shared how he did not know them, nor had he worked with them before, but said he was excited to try out something new.

'That also opened my mind because I knew that it was something out of my element; something new. I always try to push the boundaries a little bit. I did my due diligence, trying to find out who they were. They mostly do women's stuff; they do dope stuff, so I was excited to see then what it was that would come about. When I met them, I just knew,' he said.
Modise, who also works in broadcasting and the corporate space, said his and the designers' energies just clicked when they met. He added that he was grateful to have met them and to have been dressed by them.
The Hollywoodbets Purple Team brand ambassador, who also goes all out for his Durban July looks, said when he discussed his look for the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Polo event with the designers, he did not know what he wanted, so he gave them full creative rights. He shared that all he did was tell them what he liked and did not like, and they created their magic.
The Johnnie Walker Blue influencer shared that he just wanted something he had never worn before—a statement piece. He added that he enjoyed his look.

The Prestigious Group founder said he was now monetising his love for fashion and hinted that something was brewing with African Fashion International (AFI). He said they have signed a contract for a collaboration.
The MmusoMaxwell founders, who also dressed influencer Sarah Langa for the event, said dressing Modise and Langa was in line with them stepping out of their comfort zone in terms of their brand. They shared that their brand was more focused on working women who knew their style and not easily influenced.
'Sarah is wearing our classic bishop-sleeve shirt with tailored pants. It's something that was taken from our men's wear collection, but we gave it a feminine edge to suit Sarah's style. Teko is wearing our AW25 (autumn/winter 2025) collection from the men's wear, so we changed the colour to suit the polo,' explained Potsane.

The two who have partnered with Johnnie Walker shared that they were sceptical about dressing people for the polo, but once they found out that it was Langa, who had bought designs from them before, and Modise, who also loved fashion, they were relieved. They said it was easy to work with both Langa and Modise, adding that they looked forward to more collaborations.
Celebrities and influencers, including Jessica Nkosi, Khosi Thwala, former Miss South Africa Natasha Joubert, Siyanda 'Siya Bunny' Bani, Yaya Mavundla and Thandi 'Blue' Mbombo, came out to enjoy the polo match and made fashion statements.

Akiko's (the Original) Is Back With a New Powerhouse Chef at the Helm
is the regional editor for Eater's Northern California/Pacific Northwest sites, writing about restaurant and bar trends, upcoming openings, and pop-ups for the San Francisco Bay Area, Portland, Seattle, and Denver. Chef Ray Lee is readying a comeback for the original Bush Street location of sushi favorite Akiko's this fall. It won't be Akiko's Part II, or even Part I, given that the original technically moved into the SoMa neighborhood as of January 2023. Rather, the space will reopen as an entirely new restaurant in mid-to-late September; it currently doesn't have a title, but is instead being referred to by the working name TBD, according to a press release. This time around, Lee won't helm the restaurant solo. Joining him is chef Tommy Cleary, of Hina Yakitori. Since the start of the year, Lee and Cleary workshopped food at Lee's other restaurant, Friends Only, hosting two dinners at the Nob Hill restaurant. What they've landed on is an a la carte izakaya-style menu with a beer, wine, and sake menu to complete the experience. Annette Chu Annette Chu Annette Chu Annette Chu During the test dinners, dishes under the Hina menu included tsukune, or a chicken meatball with an egg yolk; kawa, crisp chicken skin wrapped around a skewer and dressed in ikura; and grilled tako, or octopus. For Akikos, diners tried items such as okonomiyaki with king crab and smoked trout roe, chawanmushi with shrimp and truffles, and nigiri sushi. Lee worked with Elmer Lin of Consortium SF to refresh the space. The new restaurant will be 'dark and moody,' the press release states, with paint and wallpaper by Scott White and walnut millwork by Pseudo Studio outfitting the space. Akiko's was originally a sushi restaurant that opened in 1987 under Lee's parents, but in 2009 Lee eventually bought them out and took over the family business. Under Lee's stead, he grew the restaurant into other businesses, including Family Cafe (which opened in 2019 and shuttered in January 2022), 10-seat sushi counter Friends Only in Nob Hill in November 2022, and the eventual move of Akikos to the luxury residential high-rise the Avery. The original Akiko's last service was on New Year's Eve of December 2021, and the space flipped to hosting occasional private events before it closed for its design overhaul. Annette Chu Annette Chu Cleary opened Hina Yakitori initially as a casual yakitori restaurant in Oakland in 2015, having previously trained under acclaimed yakitori master Kazuo Nakayama at Tori+Salon in Tokyo. Four years later, he reopened in San Francisco, reimagining the restaurant as a 14-seat, Tokyo-style yakitori omakase restaurant. The restaurant ultimately closed in August 2023, but Cleary dipped a toe back in the restaurant scene with the Friends Only dinners, as well as pop-ups at Berkeley Bowl and Wesburger this past year. TBD (431 Bush Street, San Francisco) is set to open in mid-to-late September 2025. To keep up with the latest details, follow Ray Lee (@therlsf) and Tommy Cleary (@hinayakitori) via Instagram.

Post Malone To Launch Fashion Label With Paris Runway Show
Post Malonehas quietly sent out invitations for a debut runway show under an eponymous label, Austin Post. According toWWD, the musician-turned-creative director is expected to host his 'Season One' presentation during the evening of September 1, however, no other details have been shared at this time. The news comes days after Post was featured as the face ofSKIMS' new menswear campaign, which saw the artist on horseback with a signature Western-style hat and Realtree camo prints. Though Post has engaged in footwear collaborations withCrocs, the label would mark the 'White Iverson' singer's first major fashion venture. By debuting in Paris, just ahead of Fashion Week, the artist is setting the bar high. With a formal runway presentation and the associations of Parisian luxury, one might think Post is preparing a high-end line. Or will the artist lean into his established ethos, which consists of a fitting blend of Western style and rugged streetwear with Hip-Hop influences? The aesthetic is very much a reflection of his music, oscillating between tuned vocals over trap beats and indie-folk serenades with acoustic guitar. Stay tuned to Hypebeast as more details emerge on the forthcoming launch of Austin Post.
